I Just Killed a Man

I took a deep breath as I looked at my target, sitting so peacefully drinking his coffee and flirting with the waitress. Men are such pigs, he’s clearly married and what’s worse is that his wife is sitting right in front of him. I put the half-eaten sandwich in my mouth and angled my scoop right at his temple just waiting to pull the trigger.

5..4..3 *Bang* so sad really, I don’t ever get to one before they die. Then why do I count you may ask? I don’t know, maybe it’s just that cruel lost part of me that doesn’t even bat an eye when killing a man- that loves seeing them suffer, one minute they’re happy drinking their coffee and the next--dead.

Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not a murderer. I’m simply the guy who kills the bad guys, which to me makes me the good guy. Ok, maybe that sounded better in my head. Back to the present, I take apart my modified sniper and scope and pack everything up before the cops get here.

By the time I get off the roof of the building, the cops are swarming the place across the street. I put my shades on, placed my bag on my shoulders, got in my car a little walk down the street where there are no cameras, and drove off with the music blasting like I didn’t just kill a man.

“Shit shit shit, I’m late” I curse myself as I pull up to the preschool. Sitting on the steps looking bored is my little sister Azzurra--or as we call her Roro. As soon as she saw my car a big smile lit up her face and she jumped in the back seat. “How was your day, sunshine?” I asked her looking in the rearview mirror. “It was fine, except Jonah tried to kiss me again” she sighed looking bored. I couldn’t help but laugh, Jonah is a little Red head boy in her class that follows her around everywhere. She pretends she doesn’t like it but she’s a little queen who loves the attention anyone gives her.

30 minutes later

Soon enough we pull up to the small two-bedroom apartment and Roro gets out of the car and stands by the door waiting for me to open it. It’s not that I couldn’t afford something better, we were more than well off but we needed to stay hidden for the time being. As soon as I open the front door I see Ciro-my youngest little brother- sitting at the coffee table doing his homework. “Hey bud,” I said to him as I walked up and kissed him on his forehead. He just gives me a small smile and nods.

“Where’s Luca?” I asked looking around, Ciro shrugged and said “he said he’s going out, I didn’t question him you know what he’s like.” “Ughh I’m going to kill him, he knows we’re supposed to be staying low, why does he have to be a pain in my ass.”

By the time it hit 8:00 pm, Luca still wasn’t home as yet. “Alright that’s it, I’m going to look for him. Ciro stay here with Roro and lock the door” I yelled aggravatedly as I walked out the apartment door. “I bet he’s at that stupid club again, when I find him he’s so dead” I mumble to myself as I walk down the nasty old sidewalk of New York City.

I stand across the street as I look at the door of the club called “Fatal,” such a stupid name for a club if you ask me. As I reached the other side of the road I look at the long line I would have to wait in to be able to enter the club, “fuck that.” I made my way to the back alley looking for the door that I knew was there. “Stop fucking around and gimme some dat ass,” I hid between the garbage bins as the door slam opened and a on break security guard comes waltzing out with a stripper tangled in his arms. Now’s my chance, before the door could slam shut I quickly made my way to the “staff only” section behind the club.

As soon as I open the door to get to the main area of the club the loud blast of the music hits my ears, I let my eyes roam the room as I take in all the half-naked bodies dancing on the dance floor, why is it so packed and it’s not even late as yet. Soon my eyes spotted who I was looking for, I made my way over ready to slap him in his head when our eyes made four and he went to make a run for it, “not on my watch.”

Before he could get far I grabbed him by the collar of his shirt and twisted his arm behind his back, “Where the fuck do you think you’re going?” “Let me go, Isa!” Luca yelled while releasing himself from my grip. “Are you out of your mind? You know we’re supposed to be staying low and you pull this shit, again? When are you going to grow up, Luca?” I screamed in his face so he could hear me over the loud music. “You’re not my mom Isa!” he screamed back just as pissed as I am, “I may not be mom but I’m the closest thing you have to one, let’s go!” I was pissed, so pissed that I forgot the most important rule my father taught me, never lose focus of your surroundings, always be alert. That’s how I was caught in this mess that I’m in right now.
