First Wish

Lily Ollie Patton lived in an old, run-down windmill house with her godfather, Bentley. Bentley was the only type of family she had,

she didn’t even know who her mother or her father was. She

didn’t even know if there was a possibility she had siblings. Lily and Bentley lived in Rok Hills. Lily always wondered who

found that name, Rok. All she knew is that she was alone in this cold, miserable world. But the world would be colder and

more miserable if her godfather wasn’t here. Sure, her godfather

was getting old, and he probably had dyslexia. He mixed words

up all the time. Lily just wished she had friends her age to relate to--she was 13, for goodness sake!

“Ben, don’t you wish we had more family? Don’t you wish we’d-” Lily was too scared to finish

her sentence. The last time she mentioned that they could move to

the city, Bentley wasn’t happy. “Wish we’d what?” Ben demanded. He was pretty timid today, as he had to tend to the

small farm they had behind the windmill. “Never mind that, let

me help you!” Lily said, trying to change the subject. “Lils, are you sure? You’ll help me tomorrow. I’m still stressed about

finding you a school, considering we live in the hills.” Lily wasn’t so happy about going to school. In the last school she’d

been in, everyone teased her about her looks, her name, and

how she dressed. What was so bad about her looks anyway? She had long red hair, pale skin, freckles, and hazel eyes. Lily, her

name, didn’t match her hair. Lily was the type of name

you’d give to a brunette, not a redhead. But she was born that way.

"Lily, I have great news! I have found a new house and we are moving! We are going to be living in a mansion and there will be

no more work to do." Ben said. Lily was full of joy and she

skipped into her brand-new mansion. She then met her parents and her sister! She hugged them and went to play with her

sister. She heard a faint voice calling her. Lily woke up from a

dream that seemed way too realistic, her back aching from

sleeping on the hard stone floor with nothing but a sleeping bag.

It turns out her godfather was the one who was calling her. "Yes, Ben?" Lily shouted as she headed down the old, frail, and creaky

stairs that could break any moment, toward the kitchen, where

her godfather was. Lily smelled something sweet in the air. "Good morning, Ben! What are you frying?" Lily asked, "I'm

frying eggs for an egg sandwich. Anyway, that's not the reason I called you." Ben said (in a voice he always uses that gives away

how a surprise is a surprise if you know what I mean) happily. "You're going to

school! And I bought 7 new pairs of clothes from the shop down

Bisher Road, just for a dollar each!" The last time Bentley bought clothes from that thrift store, she had to wear hand-me-

downs. But Lily was hoping this was different. "Ooh, Can I see?"

Lily said with excitement. "Okay, when I'm done cooking." Lily

couldn't wait, she was only interested in the clothes, not interested about going to school. When Ben finished cooking, Lily went to

brush her teeth, eat her egg sandwich, and go shower. She came downstairs with the best obedient face she could muster. "So...

Can I please see the clothes, Bentley?" Lily said. "Of course,

Lills! Come, here are the clothes. Go try them on and come back, tell me if you like them or not." Ben handed her the clothes

and she rushed upstairs, very excited to try them on.

The first cloth was a gray turtleneck with no sleeves. It looked nice when Lily tried it on. Then the next one was plain shorts.

She tried on 2 casual t-shirts, 1 tank top, and 2 old jeans. It was

okay. Besides, it didn't look like hand-me-downs. Lily decided

that she liked all of them. She didn't like the tank top though, it was right above her belly button. She didn't know

how to feel about that, as she's never worn something for teens like her.

There was one thing she was misunderstanding, though. She didn't know what school would look like, especially in 8th grade,

as she started being home-schooled when she was 7. She just wished she had a sister, it's been her dream since she was born.

If only I could have a sister, I wish I had a sister. Lily thought to herself. That's when she made her first wish.
