The Same Boring Day?

“ALVA CARTER!!! WAKE UP RIGHT NOW OR I’LL SMACK YOU HARD.“, Millie screamed, causing me to sit up with a jolt and find her glaring at me as if she would burn holes in my face by just staring.

“What is it?! Why are you screaming like that in my ears?“, I asked frustratedly, shooting her an annoyed look.

“You’ll be late for work! It’s already past 9 and I’ve been trying to wake you up for the past hour. Get up already.”

"No way!", I exclaimed, glancing at the clock, which confirmed what Millie had just informed me. I jumped off my bed and rushed into the bathroom to get ready. I heard Millie sigh loudly as she left my room.

I stepped out of my room all ready for work, wearing black dress pants and a matching leather jacket on top of my white shirt. I sat at the table and hurriedly shoved the pancakes prepared by Millie, dripping in sticky maple syrup inside my mouth, and stood up to leave, shouting goodbye to Millie who shouted back, “Take care and have a good day.“, as I was getting out of the door.

Millie Carter was my elder sister, 4 years older than me, and my caretaker as well as guardian since the day mom died in a car accident. I don’t remember the incident as I was just six at that time but Millie, although she tries to hide it, remembers it and misses mom a lot, at least more than I do. I don’t really miss mom maybe because I hardly knew her and whatever memory I had of her was now a blur so you can’t miss a person you hardly remember, right?

Millie, me, and dad lived in a small apartment in New York City and as dad had already retired from work, I was the only earner in the family. Millie was too busy taking care of dad and the house, so she couldn’t have time for work. I worked in a small skincare products manufacturing company and earned just enough to make ends meet for all of us.

Millie was sublimely beautiful, with her sleek blonde hair that ran down her shoulders coiling into curls, ocean-blue eyes, a straight nose, and bright pink lips, like rose petals blown apart. She was quite attractive as she would emit a radiant glow wherever she went, which would magnify the awe of her presence. I had always admired her beauty and was proud to have her as my sister.

I reached my office building which towered over me as I got off the bus, shivering slightly on the chilly Friday morning of December. The trees along the roadside were swaying pleasantly with birds chirruping over them. I saw a ginger-colored cat with a puffy coat of fur sitting cozily under a tree nearby. I stared at it for a while and then sighed heavily, coming back to reality, thinking of the same boring day ahead of me, filled with a never-ending chain of tasks to be done.
