Kat’s POV

There is no better feeling than the wind against your pelt. The freedom to just run. I find myself in a path of tall grass next to a small creek and I drop down onto my belly, panting. I rest my snout on my paws and let my eyes droop.

If only I could stay like this forever. I think to myself.

“Kat!” Someone calls my name pulling me back to reality.

A large t-shirt is dropped in front of me.

“Shift. Now.”

With a groan I shift back to my human body and I pull the t-shirt over my head.

“There.” I sigh. “Happy?”

My brother, or should I say, my probation officer turns to face me with his arms crossed over his chest.

“You need to be more careful Katherine.”

“It was just a run Lucas.”

“It was running as your wolf, the exact thing I told you not to do.”

I roll my eyes.

I both hate and love Lucas at the same time.

For the longest time it has just been the to of us. Two rogues without a pack. We’ve been running since I was four, since as long as I can remember. Never staying in the same place too long.

I was only four years old when we left our pack, Lucas was twelve. I barely remember our home, or our parents and Lucas never talks about them.

Sixteen year on the run and I really don’t understand why.

“I’m tired Luke, can’t we camp here for a few more days?”

“No.” My brother’s voice is stern and cold.

“Luke.”

My brother’s eyes lock with mine and for just the slightest moment his stern facade breaks.

“Kat.” Lucas sighs. “Please, don’t fight me on this.”

“If I knew why we were running-”

“Katherine!” Lucas scolds me yet again. “I need you to pack up our camp while I gather supplies.”

“Fine.”

“You know I love you? Don’t you Kitty Kat?”

“I love you too Luke.”

It doesn’t take me long to pack up our camp, after all we don’t have much. With our worldly belongings divided between our two large back packs I sit and wait for Lucas to return.

A howl in the distance makes the hairs on my neck stand on end.

I find myself looking around frantically for some sort of hiding place. I pull the bags into a bush behind a cluster of trees and I do my best to make myself invisible.

Two wolves burst into the clearing, they shift and slink further towards my hiding spot.

“They were here.” One of the strangers says.

“How can you be sure?” The other asks. “What is so special about these rogues anyway?”

A hand wraps around my mouth from behind but before I can fight my attackers a voice whispers in my ear.

“Shh Kat, it’s me.” Luke’s voice calms my fight. “Stay hidden and be ready to run.”

“But, what are you-”

A howl rips though the clearing and it only takes me a second to realise it came from Lucas.

The two strange wolves are no match for my brother’s strength. He makes easy work of them, but while his back is turned a third wolf comes as if from no where smashing into his side. The new wolf is larger than any I have every seen and his pelt a midnight black

Lucas fights but doesn’t seem to stand a chance as the black wolf knocks the wind out of him. He pulls himself back up onto his paws and sprints towards the black wolf. I let out a gasp as the black wolf seemingly swats my brother aside like an annoying fly.

I slap my own hand over my mouth as the black wolf’s head snaps towards my hiding spot.

Lucas finds himself pinned with no where left to go and shift under the paw of the black wolf.

“Go Kat! Run!”
