The storm brews
Gideon looked over the balcony to the ground below him. Wind tousled the young man’s hair leaving a shaggy mess. ‘It looks like a mop!’ His mother would say. He raked his fingers through his hair contemplating was it really a mop? Or was it just not close shaven enough for her. It was kempt neatly and meticulously if the weather would permit it. Windy days such as this left Gideon unwillingly to mess with the short hair most days. Giggles erupted from with inside as his mind wondered. Wondering where Adelyn managed to get her fiery red hair. The 3 year old toddler was as fiery as the day was long, oftentimes reminding him of his wife. While Blair herself had long beautiful red locks, Gideon himself sported dark as night black hair. He would’ve been lying if he said he didn’t question if Adelyn was even his child. Lord only knew Blair and him had been on the outs the last few years and only chose to stay because of the toddler that ruled their lives and the sleeping baby inside. That came from a good time; when they both promised they would try. They would try for the best of them and all the years they put forth and would try for their daughter that now turned daughters.
Elena, the youngest, favored her sister in so many ways yet, there were hints of him there. There was no mistaking that was his child. Yet the eldest; she favored Blair here and there. She was a beautiful creation of her own and like most things she paved her own way. In looks, and in life; he knew she’d be a force to reckon with and lord help the man she would marry one day. Gideon’s mind went back to the paternity test he had stored away in his truck away from prying eyes. He didn’t want to open it. Not yet anyways; he feared it would confirm what he knew and then what? Would he leave? Would he stay?
Sometimes things are best left alone, he supposed.
The tall man standing at 6’4 walked inside the house, boots thumping on the wooden floor as he walked calculated, every step pre planned. Giggles turned to squeals followed by a dash of red hair that streaked by the opening to the living room. Blaine’s voice could be heard soon after “You can’t run forever deppputttyyy!” Hm. One of Adelyn's favorite games; cops and robbers. It mused him that his daughter or supposed daughter wanted to be like him. ‘If she was only a son… I wouldn’t question the mere thought of her being my own” he thought. He rubbed his face knowing he needed to get those thoughts out of his head but that nagging feeling would stay.
Even through out his teenage years Gideon never saw himself as handsome. From blue eyes that mimicked the ocean, to the rough and tumble face that was now sporting a 5 o'clock shadow. He was a tall man, lean and well built man. Yet be had been told so many times he could never be so vain to say 'yeah I know I am handsome' infact he would say 'Im no different then anyone else.' Even with the thoughts of his looks further distracting him from the now wailing baby, to the toddler running amuck claiming she was now the sheriff he couldnt ignore the summer storm brewing over the horizion. He knew it was coming, he kept getting whiffs of rain through out the day which preluded that it was indeed going to be a nasty one. "Blair! Im going to go secure everything" he called out before making his way further inside. No reply came; not that he ever expected one. Blaine had since given up on even really talking to him unless necassary; which if he was frank was a welcome thing in his book.
With out much effort of dodging as Adelyn had since made her way into her room to play; Gideon made his way out the front door towards the barn where they housed a handful of cows and a couple horses. He had built the barn himself. He was determined to show himself that he could do it. At the age of 17 he thought he knew everything and was determined to show it. Knowing he would inherit his parents' house that his girls now stayed in with his 'roommate' he wasted no time even as a teenager to make improvements and show the world it wouldnt take him down.
Rough hands slammed the shutter close on the barn window, a grave mistake he made when he built the barn but couldn't bring himself even now to rectify and closed the hatch on it. Methodically, calculated, he moved around the barn boarding up windows, closing hatches and pulling doors shut with the animals secured inside its wooden safety. Through all the storms, the tornado warnings, and floods the barn refused to bend, to given in just like Gideon himself.
