The Call
*Present*
Its 8am.
A man walks towards his office in powerful strides. Hushed Whispers silence themselves on hearing his steady yet fast footsteps. Another scandalous article has been published about him in papers this morning. It didn’t bother him then, it doesn’t bother him now. His secretary greets him and wishes him good morning, and hands him a cup of what might seem like coffee but only his close team knows it’s anything but.
He takes the drink, a copy of his schedule and enters the office as his secretary places a pile of files to be reviewed by him. His bodyguard and secretary silently wait for his orders. On taking a glance, Alejandro realises his work is cut out for him given he has a flight at midnight to Chicago for his work to meet his biggest client. He tells his team thank you allowing them to retreat to their places. His secretary goes back to attending calls letting people know of his unavailability unless they have a meeting scheduled. It’s past the sunset, deeply engrossed in his work, it seems another day has passed and he has missed his lunch.
Everything flows as usual until a dreadful ring makes its appearance in the background.
The phone seems to ring, but he knows it’s not his. His bodyguard enters with a knock. He unfolds the phone and hands it to Alejandro.
One look and his eyes know exactly who and why the call has been made.
He takes the call and a deep breathe.
Turning around in his chair, he is longs to hear that sound that has been haunting his dreams for the past 7 years. It might look he’s gazing the skyline, yet all he’s doing is catching glimpse of the little grey hairs that weren’t there seven years ago…
“Hello, Alejandro? Is it you?
It’s been so long, How are you? I..”
The girl’s melodious voice flows down through the other end and there goes his heart, stops beating sending him down a spiral he didn't want to get out of.
“Come to the point Ava. Your breath is out of control, you’re hesitating…”
“I need you”
I understood the terror that unmistakably flowed through her.
“Plush, see you at 10?”
“Yes, And listen?"
“Hmm?"
“Thank you”
And the call ended. This call changed the course of the days to come.
Alejandro called his secretary, to confirm a table for him tonight at 8. And asked her to clear his schedule.
He could see the question of earlier meetings swirling in her eyes yet his eyes said everything and all was done without a question.
He called his clients and told them he wouldn’t be able to make it.
.
.
.
.
He could burn the world for her then,
and was willing to do it again.
It was now a waiting game.
