Prologue
âAre you sure you donât want the last tiffany Mentz?â He asked his eyes fixed on the last candy I bought him, âare you sure?â
âOh yes silly, live it to the last bitâ I say as he grabs the candy and chews it satisfying himself. âIts almost thirty past nine, lets hurry up to catch the last train, Niall!â I say getting up and rub off the leftover bread crumbs from my satin blouse which was given by Niall on my twentieth birthday last year. âI canât wait to open the gift you gave me, and how is it private?â I emphasize as we both giggle. âCindy?â He whispers on my ear as we get onto the metro train. âYes?â I say looking at him and unable to stop thinking how cute he is, I just froze.
âIâm feeling so- soâ He stammered. âGrateful of having you in my life Cindyâ he said shyly, blushing. The train took off.
âAw Niallâ I hug him âdonât be. You know how much I love youâ I add smiling up at him as I drop my head on his shoulder. âNo. Really, I was surprised when you chose me out of dozen guys!â He laughs. âI still love the way you valued me by seeing me also as a person as you know Iâm in a way⊠special.â
âNiall, please donât say you are recalling the incident when Javen hit you on your head.â
âHow could I ever forget!? It was the most-most humiliating part of my lifeâ
âOh, forget him! Think about the positive side, from that day⊠we got to know more about each other. I would say, thanks to himâ I say trying to change the subject. âYa rightâ He gives me a fake laugh and there was silence for a while until my stop approached near.
âI really didnât agree to leave you on your ownâ I say âwhy not, Iâll stay and drop you off at the your stop myselfâ
âYou always say this, Cindy! Iâm not a child.â
âNo your not, but you know-âI say when he interrupts. âMentally damaged. You think I may do something stupid. Am I right?â
âNIALL! Stop. Talking. Nonsense.â I say sternly. âI just wanted to spend a little more time with youâ I say covering it up.
âYour great at thisâ He teases me as I roll my eyes. I slightly giggle. The train finally comes to a halt, but my insides tell me to stay with him. âAre you sure Niall, cause I canât separate myself from my babyâ Now it was my turn to tease him. âIâm pretty sure you need to head home its ten alreadyâ.
âIf you say soâ I say. The lady announces; The train will take off in 10, 9, âŠ
âYou should go nowâ He says as his gaze shifts back to someone behind me and to me back. âI willâ I squeeze his hand tightly. âReach home safely and text me when you did. And I LOVE YOU!â I bend down to give him a peck (which I know he wouldnât have expected) and rush out of the train. The train takes of in the count of1. I follow the train as it slowly picks up speed. I wave him bye and give him phone signals so that he canât forget to text me once he reached his home. I wait at the silent pavement till the train reaches out-off-sight. And turn to leave when I see a familiar man standing beside the subway entrance.
Javen.
I frown at even thinking about that name. I turn away and decide to use the lift instead. But he wouldnât give up. He thrust himself Infront of me making it clear he wants a conversation.
âI recall you at high school Cambridge, remember me Cindyâ He smirks saying my name in a strange way.
âHow will I ever forgetâ I mock and fold my arms, His eyes trailed down my body before coming back to meet my glaring eyes. âSo how was your mini date with your boyfriend?â he asked taking a step closer as I go a step back, but how does he know about my date with Niall. I donât reply until he says. âSaw you at the mallâ He answers to my question.
âNow if you would excuse me, its getting lateâ I try to dodge him, but he covers my path. âWant me to drop you?â He asks me innocently but I know he is hiding his playful smirk he always gives me.
âNo thanks. Javenâ I say checking my watch. Ten thirty. Damn him. ânow really excuse me Javenâ But this time I pushed him aside and made quicker steps to the lift. âWell at least let me walk you to the cabâ he says following me. I didnât reply. But a part of me says yes to this question as its better to keep a known company in lonely streets. It could be dangerous. As my father says. We reached the streets. It was so deserted, there were no cars to be seen. âCan I ask you something?â I say.
âAnything luvâ He says huskily. âWhat where you doing at the mall? And surprisingly at my stop too?â I ask ignoring his comment. âRemember curiosity kills the catâ He says strongly âbut Iâll tell you, I was hanging with one of my guy friend at the billiard arenaâ I nod acknowledging.
âCan I ask you a question which I asked you since when we were at school?â
âwhat is it?â
â-and you have given me the same reply sinceâ He says ignoring my comment. Okay now I get what he is talking about.
âwhy did you choose Neill over me?â He asks looking into my soul searching for the truth, but Iâve got only one reply for him. I glare at him for a moment. âHe- Heâs a mentally retired person- â
âDonât you dare say another word about himâ I shout. I wave my hand at the timely help (cab) that arrives. âYou know why?â I say before getting into the taxi, âHeâs a better gentleman than you. Your just- mannerless. Good looks are not enough Javen, and by the way he is Niall not Neillâ I Finnish and slam the taxi door on his face. âItâs not like Iâm going to give upâ I heard his faint voice say from outside the car, before the taxi took off.
