Tap. Tap. Tap.
The rain outside formed a delicate melody outside the vast window. On a bed, surrounded by posters of famous actors, singers and dancers sat a 16-year-old girl, her silky, chocolate, brown hair spilled over her shoulders like a waterfall; her teal smooth sea glass eyes gazed mesmerizingly into her new novel, โthe last chanceโ. However, something stopped her from getting immersed in her novel, or should I say someone โฆ
โMi pequeรฑa, come down for dinner,โ a young but tough voice called down from the kitchen. Maria sighed and took one last glance at her novel before putting it down.
โIโm coming mama!โ
The sound of footsteps echoed through the house's shallow walls while the delicate scent of cheese and fresh bread came flowing through the air.
โWhere is Pablo, Anna?!โ questioned an old woman.
โIโm right here, senoritaโฆ.โ a young-looking man appeared halfway. He was dressed in a fancy black night suit and his sleeves were rolled up just so you could notice his large, veiny hands and the tattoos kissing his arms. Pablos black hair slicked back revealing his rough, chiseled face. His piercing storm-grey eyes bore into Maria. He accidentally took a quick glance at the young girl effortlessly swishing her beautifully ,curved hips elegantly walking down the stairs, but quickly turned his focus back on the middle aged women , he came closer to Anna, pulled her in by the smooth waist she had and kissed her with no emotion nor expression on his face , as his full rosy lips melted between her thin chapped ones, she sucked in the strong, manly, cologne smell he carried spreading in the room, and almost fainted in his arms. Maria, Anna's daughter, looked at them with hurt and disgust , narrowing her eyes as she glanced away to look at her grandmother.
Maria walked up too the only human she could trust (her grandmother ), and whisper, shouted too her questioning who the mysterious man kissing her mom was, but she slowly got lost in her thoughts as the scent of freshly baked goods entered her nostrils reminding her of memories she treasured with her father before he tragically passed away for unknown reasons, since that night her mother fell in deep depression and became an alcoholic, hitting Maria whenever she got the chance, when Maria would come back from school she would quickly run up to her room and lock herself in, trying to avoid her abusive mother.
Soon watery tears formed under her long black lashes and drops of her wet tears spread across her tan face covered in freckles as she was abruptly wiping them with her small palm trying to cover the pain she felt inside, from her grandmother.
They all sat at the festive table; the Christmas tree sat right behind Pablo with the lights lighting up his face. Maria felt a sudden chill crawl through her body as she kept on glancing at the man sitting beside her. She never felt like this before, hate and love mixed into one plate, was this really possible? With a sudden swoosh, Maria stood up abruptly and rapidly ran up to her room. The table was silent. Not a single movement. Anna knew what happened.
When Maria was smaller, her father was only there till the age of 6 until he passed away. After Annaโs alcoholism, she promised her only daughter that she would never give her heart away to a different man. But here she was, seeing her mother's promise getting ripped into shreds.
That night was silent, the only thing you could hear from the women's room was music that disturbed the tears of ice dropping down slowly on Mariaโs puffy face.
A blaring knock on the door distracted Maria, thinking that it was her mother who opened the door abruptly and smashed against a broad silhouette. With embarrassment she backed away from Pablos muscular figure and back onto her bed's white sheets. Pablo came closer to the miserable woman,
โMaria, Iโm sorry I didn't introduce myself, but Iโm Pabloโฆ Pablo Santiago,โ he spoke while clearing her tears with his glacial hands.
Maria, surprisingly, liked the feeling of having an older male figure by her side loving her like a parent should. However, she still had something bugging her about this man that just appeared in her life one day; especially at Christmas.
