Chapter 1

"Wake up you good for nothing, ungrateful child!" My grandmother, Eleanor Moris yelled up the stairs.

I got up and went to the bathroom to get showered before school. My grandparents raise me, my mother left to marry some rich guy after my dad abandoned us. Eleanor is my father, Mitch Moris' mother. She depises me and my mother. I was left here with her and my grandfather, Nathaniel Moris, when my mom decided she wanted a new life without a child. That was 10 years ago. I am now 16.

As I got out of the shower, I looked at myself in the mirror. My once long and beautiful blonde hair is now dyed black as my grandmother hated my hair because it reminded her of my mother, my eyes had bags under them from getting little to no sleep on my lumpy mattress, and then there was my figure. I was skinnier than I would have liked to be, but they only fed me leftovers. I don't know how the authorities haven't gotten involved yet.

"Maye Anne Sinthro, you are strong, you are beautiful and you will make it out of here alive one day," I repeated the mantra as I got myself dressed. My mother, Mila Rae, gave me her last name, Sinthro.

I threw on an old pair of ripped black jeans and an oversize t-shirt, considering my size, not much fit. I pulled on my old vans and threw my hair up in a pony tail. I sighed as I walked down the stairs, bookbag thrown over my shoulder.

"What the hell took you so long? You are gonna be late and I'm not driving your ass!!" My grandfather yelled at me. He was at least in his fifties, a bald spot in the middle of his head with a white receding hairline.

"I needed to get a shower. I was up late studying for a test on friday," I walked over and grabbed the brown bag my grandmother had with leftover meatloaf in it from two nights ago. I would have to heat it up when I got to school.

"Go. Get out of here before you're late to school. You know what happened the last time," my grandmother scolded me.

I walked out the front door just as the school bus was driving past. Great, now I have to walk to school, I thought. I started walking and just hoping for a better day. My grandmother scolds me a lot, she has even whooped me for less than mediocre things I have done. I can't wait to leave. I can't handle all of the feelings of being unwanted anymore.

A block away from school, I heard the revving of an engine and before I could turn around I was smacked in the side of my face by a cup of coffee. Stopping in my tracks, I look up to see Meridith Hansing, the bitch of Rockford High School. I walked up to the school, going through a side door so no one could see me. The door lead to the janitor's closet door where I could clean up and then go find my best friend.
