Chapter 1
Chapter 1: Lockwood Family
November 01, 2022
The sound of the thunder woke Lacey from her deep slumber as she sat up in bed hazily, stretching for her glasses on the small table near to her bedside. She heard the birds chirping as she peaked through the window blinds and saw them crying out for their mother.
"Poor birds, do stay safe until your mother is home," Lacey whispered. Too bad the birds didn't understand a word she said and kept chirping.
Lacey looked at the alarm and realised family breakfast would soon begin. Her father was an entrepreneur, her mother a nurse, her older brother and sister both a veterinarian.
Lacey on the other hand wasn't sure what she wanted to become— she loved solving mysteries while watching mystery movies and aimed to solve them before the movie ended. You could say it was a weird obession for her unlike other teen girls her age... Not that Lacey seems to care.
She quickly took a shower and put on her attire for the day— a black pants, a long sleeve black shirt and her blue fluffy coat that she held over her hand. Her hair was curly, wild and orange, she usually left it in its natural state but decided to pin it up today as it was getting quite long.
She then packed her bags with her school equipments and rushed downstairs. "Morning guys," Lacey greeted. Everyone was busy focusing on themselves that they just hummed and went back to their business.
Sadness fell over Lacey but she was quite the optimistic person, she pulled the chair and sat sharing her own breakfast as she attempt to make a conversation.
"Mom can you believe that I solved the Ross Wild Mystery yesterday and before the movie ended too," Lacey spoke. A thud sound snapped Lacey's head from her mother's direction towards her father. He slammed the cup of coffee on the table causing everyone to go rigid— Lacey had soon realised what she had done as her father hated when she talked about those shows.
"Have you found out your career path yet," Mr. Lockwood asked.
Lacey turned to her mother who was as silent as a lamb, hoping for her to step in and say something. "No father I haven't as.. yet," Lacey trailed off. "—but I will soon just need more time," she finished.
"Young lady you have a year left in high school and all you worry about is those stupid knock-off shows," Mr. Lockwood yelled.
"Dad they're not stupid! I learn a lot from those shows plus they opened my eyes to many—" Her father eyes widen and his fist clenched. "Enough young lady, hurry and leave for school." Lacey got up from the table and ran outside waiting for her best friend June to pick her up.
Have I forgot to mention that Lacey's family was dysfunctional? Unlike other families— her family cared about status and what people think about them.
They never gave her a chance to express her self nor her emotions because they didn't value those things. Always forcing things upon her and expected her to do it without questions.
June pulled up near Lacey's house as she beeped the car to get her friend's attention.
"Lace what's wrong? Wait lemme guess another family issue?" June questioned.
June knew Lacey all too well as she was the only one who knew what type of family Lacey had. "Yeah I accidentally rant about the Ross Wild show to break the silence," Lacey muttered. June didn't say another word as she knew that what ever dampens Lacey mood, it'll take a while for her to return normal.
They arrived at school as Lacey got out of the car. She tugged her back straps tightly over her shoulder and kept her head down. "Look it's Lacey the nerd," Bella said. She was Minnesota's High popular girl and a big bully— Lacey didn't think it was bullying, she thought it was a way for the universe to help strengthen her for the real world and make her a better person.
What a weird way to think right? Well that's Lacey for you! She head to her locker and grabbed her geometric set— super excited for Math class as it was her favorite subject. She loved how Math made her think hard and outside of the box, it's a like solving a hard puzzle. As long as you know the roots, the series and formula you could solve it or atleast that's what Lacey thought.
