~ Prologue ~
“SINCE THE BIRTH OF OUR WORLD, dragons of many breeds have held domain over our world; guarding us with their otherworldly strength and guiding us with their boundless knowledge. Though the nature of dragons is hard to define, very few words may even attempt to do them justice.
Beings made of magic and holy fire, they protect the very fabric of our world and have done so since the dawn of time, their very souls tied to the health and prosperity of our existence upon this mortal plane.
As immortals, they are not suited to this earth, as the lands of Doreinth were forged with mortals in mind. So, they have faced many a calamity, the foremost in the current era being the Third Demise.
In the past few centuries following the death of Queen Thalassa, the 19th Dragon Queen, the already few number of females had dwindled year by year, bringing about an era known for its harsh conditions, famines, and wars.
The few of them that remained were kept in positions of power, as they were the only insurable way of keeping the species of Sacerdos Dragons, colloquially known as ‘Dragon Lords’ from extinction.
The true end of the royal lineage was marked by the unfortunate passing of the reigning monarch, Queen Astrid, the 23rd and last Dragon Queen. Thought to be the mightiest of the Vermithrax Dynasty, many praised her for her glorious strength as a young queen at the mere start of her reign. Many looked to her with hope, as she was already carrying a child, a daughter destined to renew the throne to its former glory.
The greatest misfortune of the Third Demise then struck—the Scourge. The last dozen females succumbed to a vile illness that took their lives and those of many of their human counterparts, quickly and painfully. During this chaos, the young queen laboured early and lost her child due to the sickness that wracked her body.
Due to her divine power, she survived a handful of years before finally becoming a victim of the disease. With her death, there remained no female dragons.
Nor have there been for the fifteen years since.”
