"My brain is tired after telling me to stay up late to read this in on go. It might be only 16 chaoters but I fell they are long chapters. Worth it though! Like I stated in my review of the author's other war story, I adore them. Not because of a craving for blood and gore but because of the stories of lives lived through them. They have a level or truth and rawness as war is a part of life, however remote, and the opportunity of the many perspectives avaliable. This story, much like the other, gives the perspective of a woman on the home front. This time she's living in London during the blitz then to farms where she volunteered to work as a Land Girl to help provide for their rationing country. People are messy and war is devistating. Although I don't mind a sometimes detailed bloody truth, when applied tactfully, but it's not always needed to allow the feelings wartime forces upon those living it to shine through. The author does a good job drawing on those emotions without the gore. She adds the reality, lives spent for freedom, glimps of the horrors soldiers lived, those left behind without answers, the pain, the loss, the toll, without being overwhelmed with blood. She reminds that during wartime fighting on the front isn't the only battleground. Just as she doesn't allow gore to sell the story, the same is said about sex. It's there but intimate and unshared. The same can be said about being fed completely by drama, it's there for a purpose but not to just check of an invisible box. It was a beautiful story, I laughed, I cried, I became angry. There where moments I wanted to jump in and slap faces. It's not a story worth getting into if you don't have to urge to jump into the pages and join in at some point. The con really is when the author throws song lyrics side by side dialogue. Takes me a moment to sperate the two. Maybe this is a personal preference but I feel as a reader I miss out when she recieves a letter an there is no indication of one returned. Details not necessarily need to be shared but even sometime like "writing back to...was.. yada yada" I loved when Rachel grab a peice of paper & let her pen go, wanting to tell Edith some things too. I think the story needed more of that, as did the other story. Forgot to add that to the other. Anyway.. Adored it, recommend it, give it a go."
