Kanashii

When the sun sets onto the field, there is silence in my house. No more sleep. I don’t know what it is, but I feel like if something is watching me through the field. My little sister says she feels it too. From our dogs never going to the field, to random screams there, to even traumatic memories there.

Me and my siblings (Brother Chuuyou, Sister Satsujin, Me Kanashii), have been living in my parents' house, the only thing they left us with before “going on a picnic.” They never came back from the sunflower fields. My sister Satsujin was the only one who managed to leave the fields, she was covered in blood, she had a mark on herself, a sunflower with only three petals on her left shoulder. The cops found nothing. Around 2:46am, 5 more cops went missing on the field, 1 found dead. It’s been 2 years since then, as the oldest, I don’t allow Chuuyou nor Satsujin to enter the field alone.

As much as I hate it, in order to come home with money and with food, I have to walk through the field, alone. Now, I know very well what happens in horror movies when a person does that, they end up dead. So I make sure to take my dog, my phone, and pepper spray. I get a lot of weird looks from men when I carry pepper spray, I guess its not every day you see a man walking with pepper spray around town to town into a sunflower field.

“One pound of rice, one bag of bay leaves and two cups of curry please.” Let’s see, that will cost me around 4 to 5 dollars-

“2 dollars, 56 cents please.”

What? -

I stared in shock on the price, it was cheap!

“Wait, really!?” I asked.

“Yeah, we try to make business selling cheaper things, but that people would usually buy. Its real nice.” Said the lady. Her name tag said that her name was Hana, she had brown to black hair, red highlights, and brown eyes that seemed to glow to the sound of the sun. She was really pretty. I smiled at her and left the market. I was walking back through the field happily with my dog Tadeo, we named her Tadeo because of how loyal she was to us. She sat down for a second sniffing the dirt. I thought she was going to mark the territory, so I just continued to stay, she suddenly jumped and started to cry, she was trembling and backing away from the sunflowers to me. That can’t be good, I tried to get a better view when something red dripped to the dirt path, I didn’t get time to process what had happened, Tadeo just quickly started to run to the direction of the house, she was basically much dragging me. We heard stomping behind us and we quickened our pace, we finally got out of the field, looked behind and continued to run home.

What was that? Who was that? What happened? I can’t call the cops! I don’t even know if what I saw was true!

When me and Tadeo got home, we were out of breath, I gave her ice-cold water and I got myself some cream soda, Satsujin was cooking some ramen and Chuuyou was finishing up his physics homework. As I got into the kitchen all sweaty and out of breath, we were getting hardcore judging both me and Tadeo.

“You ok bro?” Asked Chuuyou.

“Yeah...” I said,

“You look like you ran a marathon.” Said Satsujin.

If I told her that I may as well have, she would go on and on about how she once actually ran one and got 1st place. She does have quite the strong stamina, and the speed. Mom and dad never showed up that day.

“Yeah, we got scared in the sunflower field.” I said.

I don’t even know if what I saw was real. How am I supposed to react to it.

“You ok?” Asked Satsujin.

Quickly snapping back to reality, I responded with a simple nod and smile. “Yeah, I brought some more rice, curry and bay leaves.” I told her, showing her the bag filled with some goodies. ″Didn’t that cost like 4 or 5 dollars?” She asked. “Surprisingly not, it cost me around 2 to 3 dollars.” I smiled, remembering how beautiful and kind the girl was to me and Tadeo. “Wow, we should buy from there more often.” She said with a face of both excitement and relief.

I patted Tadeo’s head and went to go shower. In my house, the hallway to the kitchen to the bathroom is semi long and has a window stretching between it, allowing a long and beautiful view of the sunflower field. Not sure if I should view it as something beautiful considering the stuff we have seen on it. It’s scary, yet so pretty, how intoxicating. A shiver ran down my spine remembering everything about today and about my parents. Satsujin and my parents, didn’t have the best relationship, a lot of downs. She always felt the urge to be perfect because of me and because Chuuyou as the youngest I guess; mom and dad wanted a copy pasted and improved version of me and Chuuyou. They were too hard on her. I felt like it was my fault for being a try hard in front of my parents.

The day they went on a date, they took Satsujin because of her behavior that day. They found her with a guy in her room and didn’t allow her to stay with me and Chuuyou alone. However, doing that left her scarred in her mind. She was diagnosed with bipolarity after that incident. Chuuyou was gone, he wasn’t our ray of sunshine anymore, he just disappeared, it wasn’t our Chuuyou anymore. I became more paranoid, more anxious, I felt lost. All of that came from something that was supposed to be a cheerful day, a sunflower field.
