The Fog

The fog hung over the lands, ever drifting. It was there for as long as the woman could remember.

She watched as some kids played outside without a worry.

She wondered how they could play despite the fog

Did they not feel it clinging to their skin?

Did they not feel their throats choking up the moment they felt exposed?

Perhaps it was because they were kids.

Yet….when she was a child she saw the fog.

Yes, the fog drifted and changed through the years.

It almost dissipated entirely now and then.

But it always returned in the end.

In fact, what was so special about today?

She watched other people walking through seemingly unfazed by the fog every day, yet only today she felt surprised by those kids.

Maybe it was because recently, the fog was far thicker than before.

She hadn’t even stepped out in weeks.

She hoped it would diminish soon but it only grew stronger.

Some days, even looking out the window sent shivers down her spine.

She closed the curtains, and turned the heater on before wrapping herself with a sweater.

She stared at her phone texting all the various friends she had.

She laughed at all the various things they said as they talked about their lives.

She suddenly found her phone growing cold.

All the relations she had were boiled down to blocks of texts.

People she had not seen in ages.

People who said large as life promises about love and friendship but would much rather spend time with anyone else than them.

Just yesterday, she felt warmth from them and today she didn’t.

She closed her now freezing phone.

She huddled up praying she would be safe from the cold now.

Unbeknownst to the girl, her heater had stopped working some time ago.
