Chapter 1

He flew high in the sky.

“You’re impossible to beat.”

The boy on the ground said as he lowered himself with a smile.

“Hmph. You put up a good fight.”

He said to the other boy, who groaned.

“Is this the 5th time I lost to you? It must be, but just fighting you makes me stronger. I want to be a Sky Wielder after all.”

The brown haired boy said, then looked to him.

“You too, right?”

“Of course.”

He replied simply, and another boy who was standing nearby laughed.

“Haha, but Kaze, being a Sky Wielder requires a partner, and who could match you?”

The other boy pointed out with a cheeky grin, but he shrugged it off.

“Well, I’m going to be 17 soon and receive my Destiny Match. It’ll lead me to my partner.”

Kaze pointed out and added –

“I’m interested in what kind of person he’ll be.”

“Who says it’s gonna be a guy? It could be a girl. Though I can’t imagine any girl matching up to Kaze…”

The boy said, and the brown haired boy piped up.

“I hope my Destined Partner is a girl! I don’t want to partner with another guy.”

“Well, you don’t get to decide that. The Destiny Match decides.”

Another guy who had been silent until then said, pointing out to the other boy.

“I hope my Destined Partner will be a handsome guy! And Kaze, you were cool in the skies!”

A girl with pink hair gushed, her eyes shining, and Kaze waved off.

“Thanks, but I was just flying around.”

“Speaking of the Destiny Match, the government came up with the idea. How do they identify your Destiny Partner? It’s so strange…”

The third guy said, and the first guy shrugged.

“I don’t know, this world is rather mysterious sometimes. I mean, everyone can fly. I wonder what kind of gods rule this world.”

“The government rules this world, with the Destiny Match. And the army that fight the tainted beasts.”

The second guy said, and the pink haired girl grimaced.

“Ew, the tainted beasts. I hope I never encounter any of them.”

“I encountered some the other day, but Sky Wielders intervened. They were cool.”

The second guy said, and a girl with light green hair brightened.

“Really? I haven’t seen a Sky Wielder so far, even though I’m aiming to become one. Right, Kaze?”

The girl with light green hair said to the boy with brown hair and green eyes, like she was expecting him to reply.

“Yeah, I can’t wait to leave.”

Kaze said offhandedly and the girl with green hair laughed.

“Of course you would respond that way! Out of all of us, you’re the strongest. You must have been waiting forever for your Destiny Match. It’s tomorrow right? Your birthday.”

The girl with green hair said and Kaze nodded.

“I’ll get my Destiny Match tomorrow, and then I’ll set off to find my Destined Partner. I’ve been just dying to take the Sky Wielder Test.”

Kaze said sardonically, and added with a smirk.

“So goodbye Tsukomi and everyone, it was nice meeting you all.”

“He won’t miss us at all.”

The brown haired boy said, putting his hands behind his head.

“Well farewell Kaze, it was nice knowing you.”

“Goodbye, I’ll miss you. You taught everyone so well.”

Tsukomi said, and Kaze smiled.

“Yeah, but I’ve been waiting for this moment my whole life. To become a Sky Wielder.”

The world was a strange world.

Everyone could fly.

And do Elemental Magic in the skies.

No one knew where their powers came from, though there were rumors of the origin of the world being from gods.

Of course, there were those who couldn’t fly, and those who could fly for a limited amount of time.

But the majority of people in the world could fly.

Moreover, the world did not seem to like people working alone.

Everyone in the world had a partner chosen for them by the world.

When a person turned 17 years old, they would receive a Destiny Match from the government, a highly advanced device shaped like a watch which would guide them to their Destined Partner, the person destined to fight with them in the skies.

People used the Destiny Match for various reasons.

The main purpose of finding one’s Destined Partner was to take the Sky Wielder Test together, as the Sky Wielder Test could only be taken with one’s Destined Partner, and become a competent pair in the skies against the Tainted Ones.

Though first, one would enter Sky Wielder Academy, an academy where they were trained and coached on various skills in order to become competent enough to deal against Tainted Ones.

Tainted Ones were creatures shrouded in darkness which had been tainted for some reason. They brought trouble to people, attacking them for no reason.

The Army would deal with these Tainted Ones as efficiently as they could.

No one knew where these creatures had come from, though some said it was a test by the gods of the world.

Not that anyone had seen the gods of the world, if they even still existed.

Although the Destiny Match was to find one’s Destined Partner and take part in the Sky Wielder Test together, there were people who used it for other reasons.

Some people just wanted to find a destined friend, while others believed in love and wanted to find their destined, perfect soulmate.

The Destiny Match could be used for such purposes.

Kaze had no intention to use the Destiny Match for such purposes.

With his Wind, he was a force to be reckoned with in the skies, and he had been looking for his match in combat.

Even someone like him, undefeated in the skies, had a partner to fight with out there somewhere.

This was the reason why Kaze had been patiently waiting until his 17th Birthday, to receive his Destiny Match so he could go out to look for his Destined Partner.

The Destiny Match worked this way.

There would be a series of matches shown on the Destiny Match of potential Destined Partners, with various percentages.

23%

60%

75%

Kaze saw such percentages as he flew in the sky.

But the people ahead in the area who were searching for their Destined Partner too did not seem to match his idea of a Destined Partner.

Kaze landed on the ground, and one of the people who had been in the sky landed too.

“Hey, I seem to have you at 76% from my Destiny Match. You could be my Destined Partner. Want to fight and battle it out?”

The guy who was averagely tall with light brown hair spoke directly to Kaze, as he half looked at the screen projected by his Destiny Match, half looked at Kaze.

“Why not. I don’t think you could be my Destined Partner though.”

Kaze said since he was bored, he hadn’t found anyone who looked to be a competent match.

The guy with light brown hair smirked at him.

“Shuichiro. You?”

He said as he ascended to the sky, and Kaze replied.

“Kaze.”

The brown haired boy said, sweeping up into the sky.

“Wind huh?”

Shuichiro said as Kaze casually let a cyclone of Wind twirl around his palm.

“There aren’t many who know how to wield Wind well.”

“What, are you some kind of analyst? You’ll find I’m different.”

Kaze said, undaunted at the Fire that appeared from his opponent’s palm.

The other boy smiled, the Fire growing bigger in his palm.

“You could be my Destined Partner…let’s see from the Skies.”

The resulting battle was a swirl of Wind and Fire.

The other boy relied on firepower, while Kaze was more about manoeuvres and tricky missteps.

Shuichiro even grew a little frustrated after a while, and Kaze took the moment to hit him directly with a gust of Wind.

“Ugh -!”

Shuichiro said but threw the Fire to Kaze, who had been anticipating it and blocked it with a shield of Wind.

“Combat isn’t just about attacking.”

Kaze said, but his other hand came up and materialized a gust of Wind behind Shuichiro, sucking the brown haired boy into it.

“What -!”

“You’re not my match.”

Kaze said and sent Shuichiro crashing down onto the ground with his gust of Wind.

“Ughhh…”

“Was I too merciless?”

Kaze asked casually as he lowered himself to the ground, and Shuichiro smirked weakly at him.

“Not only that. The Destiny Match on either of our sides didn’t make any sound during our battle. I guess you’re not my Destined Partner.”

Shuichiro said, picking himself up to lean back on his hands with a groan.

“Ugh, it’s so hard to find my Destined Partner. I want to take the Sky Wielder Test already.”

“My sentiments exactly.”

Kaze agreed, and he raised himself back up to the sky.

“Well, so long.”

The boy he had defeated waved his hand in goodbye, and Kaze continued on his journey across the sky.

Kaze felled men and women one by one across the sky.

For some reason, he was appearing on so many people’s Destiny Matches.

They did not seem to listen to him and challenged him together for a fight in the sky.

They lost of course, and he continued on his journey to find his Destined Partner.

He came across a boy with purple hair who had 85% chance of being his Destined Partner.

But through the close match of Wind and Water, the boy ended up on the ground from his Power in the sky.

Kaze let himself wonder how his Destined Partner would be like.

Would he be around the same height as him? What Element would he wield?

Defeating people one by one was only increasing his anticipation to find his Destined Partner.

Surely his search would not be in vain.

He flew high in the sky, looking down on everyone.

Everyone was so far below him, and it was natural.

He was the most Powerful in his area, and as he saw when he got out of his area, the most Powerful in other areas as well.

He had traveled far and long, in search of his Destined Partner to take the Sky Wielder test together.

But there was no Destined Partner for him.

“He’s too strong -!”

A black haired young man stood high in the sky, Lightning crackling from his fingertips as men laid fallen around him.

A sound came from his Destiny Match.

This was very rare.

Usually people had to fight it out to determine if the other was their Destined Partner. If they were Destined Partners, a sound would come from both of their Destiny Matches during the battle.

It was very rare, but still possible, that a sound would come from the Destiny Match at meeting one’s Destined Partner, before the battle.

Raitei

100%

The sound was informing him he had found his Destined Partner, Raitei.

Kaze wasted no time. He couldn’t believe his luck.

He stepped forward and called out to the man in the sky.

“Hey, you’re my Destined Partner. Challenge me to a match.”

Kaze said and showed Raitei’s profile on his Destiny Match.

Raitei floated close to see Kaze’s Destiny Match.

Then he backed off and looked at his own Destiny Match.

“You’re only 89% on my Destiny Match.”

Raitei said and showed Kaze his profile on his Destiny Match.

“Are you sure your Destiny Match is not malfunctioning.”

Raitei seemed to be a direct sort of person, but Kaze took it in stride.

“No, I’m lucky.”

“…You’ll Lose.”

Raitei said simply, and the man who claimed to be his Destined Partner smirked.

“I doubt so.”

And then he added –

“If I am your match, you will take the Sky Wielder Test with me.”

The other man did not look impressed, though he blinked once at the sound coming from his Destiny Match.

Kaze

100%

“…What did you do?”

Raitei asked but Kaze just shrugged with a grin.

“I did nothing, don’t you know people’s percentages can change through interaction? That’s why some people use the Destiny Match for dating purposes.”

“…Such people are beyond me.”

Raitei said, then nodded to Kaze as he swung his wrist aside.

“Alright. You have a deal.”

He ignored the people whispering on the ground about him and raised himself.

“Look, there’s a new challenger.”

“Is Raitei finally going to lose?”

“I wasn’t his match at all…”

“Everyone wants him as their Destined Partner, he’s so Powerful.”

“I wonder how the new guy will do, he looks pretty confident.”

“He isn’t from this Area.”

And so they fought in the skies, and he had to admit, his Destined Partner was up to his match.

His Destined Partner was Powerful enough to summon Lightning from the sky.

Averagely, Wind was Weaker than Lightning, but Kaze was more than Powerful enough.

Kaze dodged the bolt of Lightning and threw a cyclone of Wind, which was blocked by the sword of Lightning by Raitei.

Raitei swept up and rained down Lightning spears on him, but Kaze defended himself with a cyclone barrier –

And then he sent a gust of Wind through the cyclone barrier, aiming to hit Raitei.

The hit didn’t seem to do much to Raitei, who conjured Lightning from his hands.

“You’re Powerful enough to match me I see.”

Raitei said with Lightning emerging from his hands and Kaze smiled.

“So are you. It’s refreshing.”

“I hardly encounter Wind. Fire is most Powerful.”

“Everyone knows that, and Lightning is second.”

Kaze said as he dodged Raitei’s Lightning, and threw another gust of Wind.

“…”

Raitei was silent as he sidestepped the gust of Wind.

Then his eyes narrowed and the sky clouded over with streaks of Lightning, like a thunderstorm was approaching.

The people who had been defeated by Raitei looked from their position on the ground.

“Oh, he’s doomed.”

“It’s Raitei’s final move.”

“He’s toast. One hit and he’s dead.”

“Let’s end this.”

Raitei said as he raised his hand, his eyes flashing with the Lightning.

“I agree.”

Kaze said and he let loose his Power, conjuring a gigantic cyclone of Wind around him.

“What, he’s that Powerful?”

“Has Raitei finally found his match?”

“Wind is the Weakest. Just how much did that guy train…?”

Kaze’s Wind swept around across the sky like some sort of natural disaster, threatening against Raitei’s thunderstorm.

“…I see.”

Raitei said and without a word let loose the thunderstorm on Kaze, whose cyclone of Wind swept up to defend and attack against Raitei.

The sky was blasted by the energy of the two attacks, and both people stepped back.

They had both been equally hit by the other’s attack.

They lowered themselves to the ground at the same time.

“As agreed upon, I’ll take the Sky Wielder test with you.”

Raitei who wielded the Element of Lightning, his forte, said to Kaze, the man who stood opposite him, who was apparently his Destined Partner.

“Yeah, let’s go.”

Kaze said, and that was the start of their adventure.

There was a commotion around them, it seemed Raitei was somewhat famous.

“He’s finally found his Destined Partner then?”

“Damn, I knew he was not my match, but I just had to try.”

“People can stop challenging him now, I guess.”

“That thunderstorm and cyclone was just…”

“Yeah, they’re both out of our league.”

“Are you famous?”

Kaze asked directly, bemused, and Raitei just shrugged.

“I seem to draw people for some reason.”

Raitei replied as they walked along, their destination the test area for the Sky Wielder Test.

Kaze observed him. Raitei had a stoic expression, and he didn’t seem particularly impressed upon that he had found his Destined Partner.

“I thought I would never find my Destined Partner.”

Raitei surprised him by saying out of nowhere, turning to look at Kaze.

“Well, you thought wrong.”

Kaze said in amusement as he checked out Raitei’s profile on his Destiny Match.

Raitei raised his gaze and checked out Kaze’s own profile on his Destiny Match.

“…To be Destined for someone, I never believed in it until you.”

Raitei said, then added.

“You were my match in the sky.”

Kaze already knew his Destined Partner was going to be interesting.

“I could say the same for you. People don’t usually beat me.”

The 17 year old brown haired boy revealed, as he looked at his Destined Partner in amusement.

“That’s good.”

Raitei said calmly, and they continued making their way towards their destination.
