Chapter 1

Dan had been the Jarl of Whiterun for a month now. He was still shocked on how it happened. A guard had taken an arrow in the knee, and Dan avenged him. Then the guards shot Jarl Balgruug in the knee, and he became a guard, so that made Dan the Jarl.

It kind of made sense in a way to him, but it still confused him as well. Right now, Dan, Irileth, and some other guards, were in the War Room, gazing upon the map of the Whiterun Hold.

Irileth pointed to the Western Watchtower. “Bandits keep attacking here. I think they are trying to take the tower down to make it easier for them to take Riverwood.” Dan then said, “So we will send more reinforcements. We will take some from Rorikstead, then we will also get some from here. We will keep these soldiers here until we can eliminate the bandits.”

Commander Caius was also standing with Dan and the others. “I will notify my soldiers right away.” the commander then left the room. Jace, Dan’s friend who was also a guard, approached Dan. “Don’t worry, Dan. We will not let them shoot an arrow in your knee. We will protect you.” “Thank you, Jace.” Dan said.

Dan was walking outside of Whiterun. It hadn’t left the city since he became the Jarl. He saw the huge walls loom over him. He looked to his left to see a small river flowing along. Suddenly, he heard a voice. “You never should have come here!” He knew that line. It was a bandit!

Dan turned around to see a bandit drawing a bow! He was aiming at his legs! The arrow plunged into Dan’s knee! “NNNNNNOOOOOOOOOO!”

Dan woke up screaming. It was ok. It was a dream. Dan was just in his bed. He quickly checked his knees to be sure there was no arrow (there wasn’t). Dan went back to sleep.

The next morning, Dan and the others were back in the War Room, gazing upon the map. There was bad news. Irileth spoke, “Bad news, my Jarl. Rorikstead was attacked. Unfortunately, 20 citizens took an arrow in the knee. They are now part of our guard force.”

Dan’s hand curled into a fist. It was devastating. Commander Caius spoke more devastating news, “And we lost the town.” Dan spoke an order “Send a few guards from Riverwood to the Western Watchtower. This is war.”

Balgruuf sat on a bench at the Western Watchtower. He couldn’t believe it. He was a guard now. He heard about what happened at Rorikstead. He did not think that Dan was going to be a good Jarl. Yet again, Whiterun never got attacked while Balgruuf was Jarl, nor did any of the cities.

Balgruuf then heard the infamous line: “You never should have come here!” The Western Watchtower was under attack by bandits! Balgruuf drew his bow and shot a bandit into the knee. He then drew his sword and slashed down another bandit.

There were too many bandits. They just kept coming. They were going to take the Western Watchtower over!

Dan head the news. But he heard even worse news. The bandits were coming to whiterun. He sat in his throne in armor, ready for the attack. After 5 minutes, the siege horns went off. He heard shouting and the sounds of swords clashing. Dan sat up with his sword drawn. Suddenly, the door burst open. A bandit walked through with a bow and an arrow.

The bandit quickly shot the arrow towards Dan’s knee. Dan did not have enough time to react. This was it. He was going to be a guard for the rest of his life. Suddenly, a figure flew right in front of Dan. A shout came from the figure. It was Jace! He took the arrow into his knee instead of Dan’s! He saved him!

Jace looked at Dan, “I told you I would protect you!” Jace then shot the bandit in the knee 5 times. The siege was over.

Over the next few months, Dan had reconquered the lost spots. They also took the bandits down, too. It was a victory for Whiterun, and Dan did not take an arrow in the knee. THE END.

Heika van Walderveen: I had to get used to the style. It’s a lot of switching and getting back into the story of the characters. Also the different timelines were a bit confusing in the beginning. But once you’re used to it, it’s really quite original. The plot is good, but it’s only book 1 (out of 3), but so far so good...
