Chapter 1: Three days after the Change

Mason walked through the mist-filled grass of the old Castian cemetery. Coming across his good friend Felipe and Victoria cuddled up together under the old Maple Grove tree in each other’s arms. Talking lowly when they noticed his approaching figure, “It’s about time you got here. Man, what took you so long?” Felipe asked, tilting his head up at his friend with a slight crooked smile.

“I had some serious stuff to take care of and got caught up,” he says with a shrug and perched up on one side of the tree as well. “So what did I miss? Besides your flirting with each other?” he said with a light-hearted laugh.

“Well, besides your mysterious “serious stuff you had to take care of” we were deciding to go up to Kellors Estate. An invite a few of my friends to join us of course.” Victoria said, flicking something from under her red sharp well-manicured nails. As she side-eyed Mason while Felipe didn’t notice as usual, “Oh yeah, you remember Zoila don’t you?” He asked, snapping his fingers as if the light bulb flicked on in his head.

“Zolia, well first of all is that a girl's name or a boy's name? You know im better with faces than names!” Mason chuckles while looking at Feilpe. Reach in his jacket pocket to get his flasks out. Drink doesn't affect him as much as anyone else? Why? Well, that's a secret for another time.

“Com’on that’s the short curvy thick Spanish girl with dark eyes, that fell into your lap last weekend at David’s party on Saturday!” Felipe shouted with laughter as he recalled the memory of her drunken state; falling face-first into his friend’s lap. “Oh, she did? That’s pretty bold of her to do so.” Victoria scuffed, slightly turning her nose up at the mention of her friend doing something so embarrassing that reflected badly on her. “Yeah, so you remember her now? Because I swear after that she was avoiding you as her life depended on it.” Felipe said, chuckling when his cell vibrated in his pocket. Standing up he took his cell out of his pocket and stepped away answering the call, “Hola, Mannie what’s going on?”

“Victoria, while he's away do you think he suspects anything?” Mason looks at her concerned and looks back at Felipe. “I feel bad keeping such a big secret away from him but im not sure how he'd take it. You are the only one that someone knows who I am.” He says concerned. No one knows about my secret identity fully but Victoria she… kinda knows. She thinks im some big strong guy who's a little unhinged and crazy…. Which I mean I guess you could say that. She saw me with a bunch of blood on my shirt one day and thought I got in a really bad fight. That's the most she knows. But it's still something.

“Please, it takes him a whole six weeks to notice something different or new. I highly doubt that he’s noticed anything different about you.” She paused for a moment thinking back on that day she came across him in the back of Eddie’s Diner. Covered in what looked to be someone else’s blood, it had chilled her to the bone and thrilled her at the same time. Nothing ever that exciting happens in Maine, glancing up at him she hurried and looked away hiding how that thought made her feel. Blowing out a breath she was also glad he didn’t ask her why or what she was doing walking down that icky alleyway. Finally looking at him she continued, “Look you don’t have anything to worry about with him. I didn’t tell him and besides that, it was just a fight that got out of hand right? It’s not like the guy or whoever is dead or laid up in the hospital.” She said, shrugging her shoulder and leaning back against the rough bark of the tree. “I mean if you don’t like keeping secrets from him I guess you can tell him or keep it to yourself. I don’t tell anyone everything.” She mumbled that last bit lowly hoping he didn’t catch what she said.

“Yea.. It wasn't that serious.” which it wasn't. He made sure the culprit was healed correctly and didn't remember anything that happened. And sent the person on the way. He didn't mean to get that messy but shit happens you know. Not everything is a clean job. You gotta do what you have to do to survive. He juss isn't ready to admit what he truly is to anyone. Nor does he understand it. He juss accepted it. One day he’ll do some research and figure it out until then he juss has to cover his tracks.

“What wasn’t that serious?” Felipe asked, looking from Mason to Victoria and back again. “Oh, I was telling him that it’s not that serious that Zoila is into him, and was hoping he’ll come with us tonight,” Victoria said, standing up and stretching her arms above her head causing her mini crop top to lift higher than usual. “Oh, well that is a good question will you go with us? I mean you're already out so you minus well join us at Kellors Estate.” Felipe said, tossing an arm over his shoulder, and smiled convincingly at him. “Well while you two figure out if he’s coming with or not imma see if anyone’s bringing the music and drinks.” Victoria said, tossing her midnight black braids over her shoulder as she walked away in a bit of a hurry taking her phone out of her back pocket and texting the number she named “Alicia”.

“Do you think somethings off about her?” Felipe asked, looking after his girlfriend as she walked a little down the hill away from earshot as she put the phone up to her ear. “I mean, I just get the feeling that she’s sneaking behind my back.” He said, with slight worry lacing his tone stepping away from Mason and pulling out his weedpin, pulling on the end of it as it lit up red as he inhaled the smoke letting it stream out of his nostrils.

“I don't know man. Maybe she's just trying to get some space. Maybe she's going through stuff and doesn't wanna bother you? Just ask her about it or wait until she approaches you.” Mason says with a shrug. “Aren't you guys still a little fresh in your relationship how long have you guys been together?” he adds standing up and leaning against the tree with his foot up. Still contemplating whether or not he wants to hang out with them. He should be fine for the next few hours. And he's way overdue for a little fun. Maybe he should go out. Who knows? Maybe he'll get laid tonight!

Running his hand through his thick curly roots sighing, “Yeah, you’re probably right. I mean we have been going out with each other nonstop and yeah I guess she probably feels like she needs space. We’ve been together for six months now.” Felipe said, furrowing his brows as he thought if something was bothering her but he couldn’t think of anything. Everything seemed to be going so well with them till a few days ago when she upleft in the blink of an eye right in the middle of them making love which she wanted to do. Taking another puff of his pin he shook his head, it still didn’t sit right with him. Deciding to let it go he asked, “So you gonna come with us up the road? You haven’t been out like that in a few weeks. And don’t you make up some crappy excuse like last time either.” Felipe said, lightly chuckling at his friend.

“Eh, why not? Maybe I can get laid or finally find me a girl. It's been a while since I've found love. Or got my dick wet” Mason chuckled light-heartedly. “Let's go check on your girl. Did she leave or is she juss wandering around?” Mason continues as they start walking amesly around looking for Victoria.

“I thought she was juss on the phone. Maybe she got lost or something.” Felipe says. “Maybe I should call her or something.”He says pulling up his phone and dialing her number. And strolling away a little but not too far.

“Hey, baby? Where are you? Where getting ready to leave are you coming? I convinced Mason to come with…. What? Something came up? Your where??? No just forget it. Well, hang out another time or something.” Felipe stumps back over after hanging up with a scowl on his face.

“What’s up? Where is she at?” Mason asked, wondering what was wrong with him. “She left, saying something about her sister called her and she’s walking home.” Felipe said, a little annoyed pulling out his keys he continued, “Com’on let’s have some fun.” Felipe tossed his keys up in the air heading back up the hill when Mason heard movement just past the few oak trees that still stood tall. With the help of the moonlight lighting up the starless night sky he spotted Victoria peaking around one of the trees and nodding to herself she put her cell back to her ear and walked in the opposite direction of the exit to the cemetery. Sticking to the shadows as she ran up the rocky dirt trail to a black sedan.

“Yo Mason you still coming?” Felipe called from the grassy hilltop on the opposite side waving him over. He turned back walking to the gate and slipping through going to his silver car.

“Yeah, I just.. Thought I saw something..” he says looking back again before climbing into the car. “So where to?” he adds while buckling up.

Smirking he looks over to him saying, “We’re gonna go to the party and imma get drunk and you’re gonna get laid.” Starting up the engine he cut the radio on turning it up a bit with a deep beat blaring through the speakers as they drove off heading towards the abandoned estate where their friends and others were already underway with the loud pumping music…
