Chapter 1
Chapter 1. Why
I run in through the door and rush into the living room. I throw my skateboard to the side of the closet and rush up the stairs on my toes. I can hear the creak of the floorboards underneath me as I turn into the door. She isn’t there. I breath out a reassuring grasp of air and touch my face with my hand. I stretch my arms up into the air and breathe “She was working late tonight.”
I walk away from her room and start to head towards mine. I feel a hand grasp my arm and I shout. I am a little worried I screech like a little girl.
“Matt,” My name hits the air and I turn around to my mother “You snuck out again?” I swallow down the saliva in my mouth and feel my face go a little red.
“H-hi…” She shakes her head and moves towards the door. She gives me a stare and says, “You know, I am really trying, I’m glad you are making friends but… but you can’t sneak out every night.” She looks down at the ground, “At least it’s a Friday.” She walks out of the room.
Did I just get away with that? I asked. I was glad my mother hadn’t asked where I had been, maybe she knew she would be happier pretending I was with my friends.
I grabbed a walkie-talkie and put it close to my mouth and whispered into it, “Dream3 I am in the nest, are you there?” silence. “Dream3?”
I went quiet. All I could hear was the sound of the animals outside.
“Monster?” I feel my grin take over “Delila!” I whisper shout, I can hear her giggles through the walkie
“Matt, did you get caught?” I stop for a moment and say, “Uh… yeah but she didn’t ask any questions.”
Delila thinks for a moment then whispers, “But she will probably ask questions eventually.” I can hear the strain in both of our voices.
“It was worth it.” I whisper into the walkie and I hear her giggle
“Shut up.”
All of a sudden I heard a little girl crying and I stopped and looked up. I whispered, “Stacey.”
Stacy is my little sister, she is an adorable 8 year old, brown haired girl.
“Out, Monster.” I whisper and drop the walkie.
I take a step towards the door and I can hear Delila asking what I am doing but something is drowning her out. I walk slowly down a long twisty hallway. I remember being short and straight but my mind twists it. I open the door where my sister is crying to find her fast asleep, I breathe out.
Then I hear it, a giggle. A little girl’s giggle although… it isn’t my sister who is laying on the bed falling asleep smiling. I turn around. There in front of me is a little girl. She smiles and her bangs fall over her eyes. She is blond and wearing a blue dress with puffy sleeves like they do in history class.
“Will you play with me?” She grins. I barely believe what I see, I take my hands and reach up to my eyes. When I open them she’s gone. Maybe I am just tired.
