The Swim Meet
"Let's go!" My twin Brooke urges. We are fraternal twins, I got dad's genes with blonde hair and green blue eyes, meanwhile Brooke got mother's genetics with brown hair and daring green eyes. You may say I was more privileged with the physical features but she was always the more social butterfly and extravert. I on the other hand like people but prefer to be alone reading, swimming, or just taking pictures. I love photography. We both go to school on land even though our home is obviously in the water. Oh yeah, I forgot to mention, we are sirens. No, not those horrifying creatures in the myths written by the humans, but we do have fish tails, making us what two legs people call mermaids. While the humans have spotted a few of us to make up crazy predictions on our behavior and living, they aren't aware or are oblivious to the fact that we live amongst them 12 hours a day.
"I'm coming! Geez." I reply, rushing to get my things, also making sure I have my bracelet. If you're wondering what I'm doing, my sister made me try out for swim team in the human high school this year. Now I was the best on the team, and today was our first actual competition with other schools. No pressure at all, right? To make sure I don't turn into our siren forms, we must keep on a peice of jewelery, in my case, a friendship bracelet with my sister. It ensures that at school if my skin comes in contact with water I don't expose myself.
We ran towards the large school and into the girls locker room. Many girls preparing to swim for placement on the podium or even a scholarship. Swim caps, towels and bags holding suits and goggles where spread everywhere. I noticed how I kept receiving glares though, and I was unsure as to why.
"Hi!" Another girl came up to me and my sister. She looked like a very nice person, and appeared to have a bright and bubbly personality. Even he suit, a hot pink one piece, shouted her happy attitude. "My name is Jada! I'm a huge fan!"
"I'm sorry Jada, but you might be confusing me with someone. My name is-"
"Coventina Smitt! I know." She finished for me. Brooke and I exchanged a confused glance. I had no clue what was happening.
"Puffin, come on we need to go find Uncle Mackey." Brooke told me. I hated when my family used my pet name in public, ugh.
"It was nice to meet you Jada, maybe we can talk after the meet?" I suggested. She smiled and nodded, before heading off to probably continue getting ready.
We left to find Uncle Mackey and found him talking to a boy I didn't recognize, but I was awestruck by his gorgeous features. Oh gosh, what am I thinking? Me, thinking a human is hot? Eww, no. Even though he may be better looking then the male sirens he still is a two legged, and its almost forbidden. It's very strictly discouraged.
"Close your mouth, you're drooling." Brooke smirked. I snapped out of my own abyss and fixed my posture. "Uncle!" She yelled at Uncle Mackey. He turned towards us and so did his company. Brooke ran into his wide spread arms and bear hugged him. She was a very powerful hugger. It took everything I had not to look at the boy besides them, but it became much harder when I was basically standing next t him, waiting to be greeted by my uncle.
"Puffin! Ready to make me look good?" He joked, finally looking at me. I giggled.
"In your dreams."
"Trust me, my dreams are loaded and ready to be reality Coven." He turned to the boy. "These are my neices Brooke and Coventina. Girls, this is Christian."
"Hey." He waved. I returned his gesture before my uncle added, "Coven is in the meet today. She's my best and fastest swimmer."
"I wouldn't mind seeing if that's true." Christian joked. Brooke laughed and elbowed me.
"She wouldn't mind that either." She said. My cheeks definitely turned into a tomato shade of red.
"Talk to you later? I have to get ready." He offered.
"Yeah, see you then."
