Chapter 1

“Come on Evan, give him a kiss,” a boy in a fox mask laughed.

“No ple-please, I’m sc-scared,” the crying child, Evan, said.

The kids in masks lifted Evan closer and closer to the robot bear. The robot looked dirty. Like it had been there for some time. Constantly on display for kids to touch and dirty. Evan looked into the eyes of the robot. As soulless as ever. No expression or emotion in them. The boy cries more and more. Fearing what’s to come. But who knew what could have happened next. “OK guys on the count of three ready?” the fox mask asks.

The kids laugh and nod. “Ok, 1, 2,” the boy in the fox mask says.

“Please, please, please…” Evan cries.

“3,”.

They lifted Evan right to the bear’s face. Right to his mouth. Teasing him. Laughing at him. The bear continues to sing and perform. Unaware of the kids in front of it. They moved the boy closer until he was in the mouth. The boy wailed and cried. His tears dripped into the mouth. All the moisture from his tears caused its spring locks. SNAP. CRUNCH. Pitches of blood started pouring out of his head. The kids stand there in horror. They stand so still you would believe they were statues or part of the show. The blood pours all over the bear. Making a gruesome image, a golden and dark red image.

One of the kids gags and takes off their bunny mask. They throw up instantly. The others snap out of their trance and run. “Mickey come on we have to go,” the bunny masked kid shakes the fox masked kid, Mickey, “Mickey! Mike! Micheal!”.

Micheal can’t move. He just stands there. Staring at the lifeless body. It hung there, like a coat on a clothes hanger. The doors swing open. An old man stands there lifeless for five seconds. He snaps out of it and runs to the bear. The kid in the bunny mask runs before he gets there, leaving Micheal alone. The man in the purple shirt jumps onto the stage and starts punching the bear’s mouth, attempting to pry it open. It’s nearly useless when the spring locks are shut. He continues to pull and hit it. Finally, it moves enough to bring Evan out. He lays Evan on the ground and examines him. He tries to stop the blood gushing from his head. Micheal stands there not being able to move. “What did you do son,” the man asked.

“I-I-I,” Micheal stutters.

The man punches the floor. “I asked what you did Micheal, Now you better answer me,” he says furiously.

“I-I w-was ju-jus-just tr-trying to te-tease h-h-him,” Micheal says while sobbing.

The purple man stands up. He looks around the empty room. Only seeing the security guard left. He was on the phone, most likely 911. The man tries to feel Evan's pulse. There’s a faint bump but nowhere near best enough. He grabs some napkins and puts them on his wound. “Micheal,” the man in purple says.

“Y-yes fa-father,” Micheal replies.

“You’ve gotten rid of both my sons today,” he says coldly.

“Dad…”.

“No, it’s just William to you now,”.

“B-but D-da-dad, ple-please,” Micheal sobs, begging his father.

He gets no reply. It’s quiet besides distant sirens and Michael sobbing. William stands up again and looks at his hands, covered in blood. “Stay with him, Micheal. I’ll go talk with the medics,” William said walking away.

Micheal tried to hold the napkins to Evans’ injury. The blood kept coming. Micheal couldn’t look at his brother. He could barely tell that it was his brother. His face looked too mangled. Micheal wanted to throw up. He felt guilty, numb, sad, angry, everything. Micheal sat there as his dad returned with paramedics. They rushed Evan onto a stretcher and took him away.

William went into the ambulance with Evan. He rode staring at the monitor the whole time. Never once thought of Micheal. He hated him. If he could he’d kill him, but he’s all he has left. His wife and daughter have long left him. Only leaving him, Evan, and Micheal. Now he lost those two. William’s rage felt unmatched. He wanted no needed someone dead. As they drove everything was silent. No sounds besides the heart monitor. They finally arrive and the doctors rush Evan to a room. William follows hastily while keeping his cold composure.

They hook up Evan as quickly as they can. Other doctors try assisting with his opening. Minutes passed and their attempts all led to failure. Nothing worked and Evan faded away. Slowly but surely he was gone. William stood off to the side. Quiet and undisturbed. The doctor walked over and apologized for the death. “It’s not my fault he died neither is it yours. There is no need for an apology here,” William says.

“I guess so sir. Well, we’ll give you some time but a nurse will bring the paperwork soon,” the doctor says to him.

William just nods. He walks over to Evan and looks at him. He lays here covered in blood. He feels his hand. “You didn’t deserve this boy. I’ll bring you back. We’ll be together one day,” William says.

After some time the nurse gives William his paperwork. He fills it out and gives it back. After sitting for a bit William finally moves. He had a plan. He has a goal. And he will achieve it. William gets up, touches his son’s hand, and leaves. The room is quiet. No noise within it. Only Evan’s lifeless body. Later William arrives at his home. He goes over to his kitchen and pulls out a beer. He opens it against his counter and sits down. He just sits there and drinks.

No noise. No movement. After some time Michael walks into the kitchen. He can’t figure out what to say. His fox mask is in his hand. It’s cleaned from all the blood that was on it. With Micheal's harsh rubbing, he chipped off some of the paint as well. “Fa-father I-,” Micheal says before being interrupted.

“Shut your mouth Micheal if you know what’s good for you,” William says without moving his body.

“But ple-,”.

William throws his bottle onto the floor shattering it. He stands up quickly from his chair causing it to fall over. “Micheal do you not realize what you did today? Do you not realize the consequences of what you did? Evan is dead because of you! You are a terrible son! You’re a fucking disgrace! An embarrassment! A burden I’ve been stuck with for far too long!” He screams as he walks towards Michael.

Micheal begins to cry. Not being able to move from where he is standing. His father stands up straight. “Look at me Micheal,” he says coldly.

Micheal out of fear listens and looks up at his father. His eyes are full of anger but his face shows no emotions. Micheal doesn’t know how long he can keep his eyes on his father before breaking down. William doesn’t give him a chance to figure it out. William slaps Micheal hard across the face. Knocking him over onto the ground. William walks over to his son who’s on the floor. Micheal looks up at his father but all he sees is his fist as he punches him. He lunches him two more times before standing up and grabbing another beer.

Micheal tries to sit up. He leans against the wall and tastes blood. He wants to spit it out but knows it’ll only anger his father more. William picks up his chair and sits back down. He opens his best and begins to drink again. Micheal stumbles up. “Go clean yourself off and don’t let me see you again today,” William says.

Micheal stands up and stumbles over to the restroom. Once there he washes his face and spits out his blood. William remains at the table. He continues to drink late into the night. After some time he gets up. He stumbles over to his shed in the back. He flicks on the light and stumbles onto his stool. In front of him lay a couple of blueprints. All of them are for different kinds of robot animals. Similar to the golden bear. Except these had a more futuristic design with sleek metals.

William grabbed one of them and threw it aside. He began to search sporadically. He kept looking and looking. Until he stumbled upon one and stared at it. He held it up until he started laughing. His laugh was evil. He puts down the blueprints. The blueprints contained the information for another robot creature, a yellow rabbit. He stares once more at it and grins. “You’ll be perfect my springlock bunny,” William says.
