Chapter 1
1938, As I finished packing my boxes I found an old photo of my sweet marilynn. I just wish she was still here but I can't change the past, I mean it's been three years since she got sick I have to move on at some point right? I figured the only way to do that is moving and of course the only place I could afford is in an "abandoned" town called Charingston, which sounds as bad as it looks from what I've seen online, cliche I know but it's the best I could do. I finished moving everything in the truck and thankfully I only had to use the one, that's only because I don't have a lot or really need a lot at that but it was still enough for me to be exhausted by the time I had to leave. On the road I made sure to look at all the buildings in my town, I wanted to make sure I remembered everything, all of the details.
I watched closely as he packed his last boxes in the truck. They left just enough room for me to fit and still be able to move. I had to wait till he wasn't looking to make my move, I had to be quick about it, the last thing I wanted was him to catch me...no, we wouldn't want him to ruin the surprise. He went inside and I took that as an opening to climb in the truck right behind the driver's seat, perfectly everything was going as planned. As we were driving a sudden crash got my attention and I made the mistake of looking away from my target. I quickly ducked in case he looked through the window but I don't think he saw me.
A big crash appeared right outside my truck making me slam on the brakes in fear that something broke off. I stepped outside and walked to the back of my truck nothing was wrong "weird" I thought. As I walked towards my door I saw something move inside the truck but I just shook it off, seeming how I've been driving for hours now. I was probably just seeing things. Three hours more and I'm more tired than I've ever been. I peeked in my rear view mirror and jumped at the sight of one of my boxes. It truly looked like a human but that's silly. That kind of thing only happens in movies. "Nine more hours to go" I kept reminding myself in hopes it would make me less tired...it did not.
He looked tired but I doubt he will stop and nap like any rational person, no he's not normal that's what makes him the perfect target for a low life, depressed man hmm no one will miss him. He looked in the mirror, I could see the fear in his eyes, I held my breath thinking he saw me but he didn't he saw the boxes right next to me ha fool he's making this so easy and the best part is he doesn't know. We were in the middle of nowhere so I saw the perfect opportunity to play with him like a cat playing with the prey before the attack. "Are we there yet?" I teased. I stared at his pale face observing his heart rate, it got faster and faster, he didn't dare look back. A slight chuckle left my throat as I thought of how I wanted to do it, how I wanted this lucky man to die.
I kept my eyes on the road but I could feel them droop as the desire to close my eyes got stronger and stronger. I wondered how much longer I could keep this up. I started seeing things but I knew it was just sleep deprivation, it still scared me at times. I heard a quiet voice coming from the back seat. I could barely make it out but I'm pretty sure it said "Are we there yet?" It made my heart race, nothing happened for a while after that I'd see some dark figures every once and a while but nothing too bad . I don't know why people say sleep deprivation is "Oh so scary" and "So hard to handle" . I'm doing just fine.
It was hard to resist but I had to be patient. The time HAS to be right until then I should stay quiet.
Finally we arrived after hours and hours of driving which just led up to unpacking and hours of deciding where the hell to put everything. Marilynn always knew where to put things. It took her half an hour to do the entirety of the house. I got out and decided to go in and order food before unpacking everything and god was I still tired. I walked around and through one of the windows I saw the same shadow ducking down the same as in the truck but I'm just hallucinating right? "It's not real John, It's not real." I told myself which made me feel a little better so I continued exploring the old run down house as if it were a candy shop filled with dusty, broken down delights.
CRAP! I heard him get out of the truck but he didnt open anything so he probably went inside which means I have to as well. I got out and went around ducking whenever there was a window until I finally reached a back door and snuck in. I unhooked the buckle to my bowie knife. "I've waited all day for this John." I said as I lunged towards him, my smile grew as I impaled his skin with my knife, I could cry I was so happy. I took a small vial of his blood as a trophy for my success then I stood there and watched the light go out in his eyes as his blood pooled beneath him. I thanked him for his participation and the gift of his car to take me home as I walked to the door. "This was my favorite." I said aloud as if anyone could hear me. I got my happily ever after and thanks to me...John can see his precious marilynn again.
I found the back door which wasn't super exciting but then I remembered the kitchen and headed there. I heard my name and quickly turned around only to see a man. I felt a sharp pain in my stomach before falling to the floor. That's when I saw the knife. I knew there was no escape from this. I closed my eyes and pictered my wife for the last time.
