Chapter 1

Alien

Asa is the chosen one. He is the anchor. He will have the ability to be in a foreign land and human land. We all agreed that he would be our anchor from the day he was born. We’ve been watching him closely. At first glance, all of us knew that he would be perfect for the job. Asa doesn’t know it yet but he will change the world. He gets to decide either a positive outcome or a negative one.

Asa

I had a super strange day today. I kept seeing the strangest things. It was like nothing I’d seen before. I asked my friends if they saw what I saw and they all told me no and said that I was crazy or psychic or both. I think I’m just imagining things. Oh, how rude of me, I should introduce myself. My name is Asa. I’m 16 years old but my birthday is in a week so I’ll be 17 soon. I have 2 dogs and live with my mom and my younger brother. My parents divorced when I was really young. I don’t really know my dad. He just left one day and never looked back. I live in Florida along the coast. I love taking my dogs for a swim and surfing. Wow, it’s getting late and I have a big day ahead of me tomorrow at school. I have a big test tomorrow so I should probably study and go to bed soon.

Alien

We’ve been giving Asa little hints but he hasn’t really picked up on those. Tonight is a big night for Asa. We’re placing a specific dream in his mind today so he knows what we’re asking of him. The dream is going to go something like this: he will be able to see us, talk to us, ask us anything he wants, and he will be able to interact with us. We will let him know what he really is because he isn’t just human. Being an anchor means that he holds both the alien world and the human world together or apart. He gets to choose whichever one he feels is best. He hasn’t actually accepted the job yet but we know he will. The current anchor is getting too old for the job so we needed to find a new one. The transition for Asa is going to be a hard one. The ritual always takes place on the anchor’s 17th birthday so we have a week to get Asa on board with the plan.

Asa

You will not believe the dream I had yesterday. If I told you in full detail you would just laugh at me and tell me I’m insane. Oh, you don’t believe me? Let me describe it for you. One second I was dreaming about the ocean and surfing and the next second my dream alters and I see this creature I’d never seen before. They were talking to me. They told me I was some sort of anchor and they told me that they were aliens. Let me just tell you that that’s not what I expected aliens to look like. They almost looked normal but there was just something really off about them. They said that I wasn’t a normal human. They said that I had powers and that I was going to be responsible for something really important. I think I’m going insane. I’m just going to try and get through the day.

Alien

The dream didn’t have the effect we intended on Asa. We’re running out of time so we’re going to place a vision into Asa’s mind to help him understand what it is we’re asking of him today at school. The whole alien world is in complete chaos right now because we’re taking memories from the old anchor and placing them into Asa’s mind. It’s pretty shaken up on this side.

Asa

As I’m walking through the halls at school, my head is throbbing. I think it’s from the stress of my test today. I need to do well on it. Shoot, I’m late for class. I can’t be late! I guess I must’ve misread the clock since my head is aching. I’m running through the halls now and I run straight into a door at full speed. How did I not see that? I’m lying on the ground with my books all around me and I see a tunnel with a little light at the end. I felt lightheaded and then I blacked out.

Alien

We just placed the memory from Damon’s mind, the old anchor, into Asa’s mind. Our plan went perfectly. As an alien, we have the ability to control the way other people act. We compelled a teacher to open the door right when Asa was sprinting to class. He should wake up soon. As an alien, we have the ability to give commands and have people actually follow through, teleport, fly, and we can’t get killed. The only way to die is from old age. Asa has the ability to do everything an alien does if he goes through with the ritual.

Asa

I regained the feeling of my body. I’m staring at the ceiling. I look at the clock and see that I’m 20 minutes late for class. I get up and I feel like a different person. I get this crazy vision that tells me to skip school. It’s such a strong feeling that I walk out of school. I go home since I have nowhere else to go. I go to get the mail and see this strange envelope I’ve never seen before. It has a weird symbol on it. I’ve seen this symbol before in my dreams. I opened it and it was a letter from some guy named Damon. I read it and everything makes sense now. I finally understand what I’ve been seeing. In the letter, Damon tells me that I shouldn’t accept. The words he uses are so strong it hits me in the gut. I decide that it’s best I decline the alien’s offer because Damon seems so urgent about it.

Alien

Asa let us down. The alien world is slowly crumbling. Maybe it’s for the best that Asa declined. We’ve been doing this for 150 years now and it’s just not how the originals wanted it to be. We all fully support Asa’s decision. The only thing is now the whole alien population will die out. Maybe we can find a way out of this.
