Hanging Hills Chapter 1
A small town just like any other sat right in the towns of Meridian. Hanging Hill, Connecticut. There on the highest mountain sat a girl draping her feet over the cliff.
“Adley, can’t you do anything other than sit so close to the edge of the cliff?” A small faint voice came out from behind a tall brush tree.
It was Adley’s youngest brother Tracen. He stood taller than the rest of Adley’s siblings at 6′3, and had short cut light brown hair. Adley’s family consisted of her grandmother, father, her two sisters, and her two brothers.
“You better hurry back before father gets upset again you know you aren’t allowed to be out when it’s day time.” Tracen spoke again pulling Adley from her daydream. “If it wasn’t for this stupid family I wouldn’t have a problem being normal!” Adley turned with anger blazing in her eyes she glared at Tracen.
Tracen put his hands up in protest. He walked over and put an arm around her and they walked slowly back to the house not speaking again.
“What have I always told you...?” “Wait dad let me explain.” Tracen stood in front of Adley. “This has nothing to do with you step down!” Adley’s dad spoke with a boisterous voice it spread through the whole house.
She put her hand around Tracen signaling him that she was fine and he walked away still close enough to hear what they were talking about. Her father had a muscular build and was slightly taller than Tracen. You couldn’t tell now but he used to have the darkest brown hair. Now it’s mostly lighter with gray streaks, His beard was faded but noticeable with his age lines
“Why do you insist to defy my words?” a look of concern befell her father’s face.
Adley knew she wasn’t allowed out but she couldn’t help but think that since they were already so far from the town that it wouldn’t be a problem once in awhile. Her father could always tell what she was thinking and put both his hands on his daughter’s shoulders putting her a whole arm length between them both. He took in the sight of his now grown daughter.
“There is no helping that the people are scared of you, it’s not your fault that people die when they see you okay?” Adley threw her hands up pushing her father’s hands away from her.
Stomping away she walked up her spiral steps. She took a sudden pause and the room fell silent. “As if it wasn’t bad enough you have to remind me every day.”
Her room was the highest room in the house. She loved her room. The skylight in the middle and a balcony she had her father put in so she could sit out during the day where no one could see her. She scanned her room filled with books she knew she would never read, and grabbed the one book she had read a thousand times trying to find a way out of this cursed house. It read, Cursed Black Dogs. This book was the book of her family history. Her family wasn’t a bunch of dogs in a pack it was just a normal family or so that’s what she wanted. Long ago the Than families heir fell in love with a witch woman. The two didn’t even know that there was a love as strong as theirs until they found each other, but the witch had been engaged already and it wasn’t to an ordinary human it was another witch from across the land. The male witch found out and he told the Than heir that if he didn’t leave the witch he would kill his whole family. Than told his lover witch that their love was not to be and was married to another. Not knowing what had happened between the Than heir and the male witch she put a curse on Than and sent him to his death saying that every two-hundred years one of the children would be cursed to walk the earth meeting new people but only once or they would surely find death in that child. Adley’s eyes filled with tears.
‘Why was it I that had to be cursed?’ She asked this question often but never wished her curse on another.
She took pride that she was the child to have the curse. Her older sister Cate was never home, she always traveled the world learning knew things about the big place called earth for her fashion company seeing as she was the CEO. Cate was beautiful with her long dyed blonde hair down to her waist with slight curls. She was smaller in the waist and has stunning green eyes. While her younger sister Nella stood on the top of the social rank dominating the model agencies, with her slender but athletic body and amber hair with brown eyes, in her small town and far beyond now. Both her brothers had high hopes of becoming professional soccer players but the eldest decided to quit and become a couch at a nearby school. The youngest great at playing soccer and continued playing, she was happy each of them lived a normal life.
Days passed and Adley still wished she could be a part of her town festival that would soon be coming. From her balcony she could see the little people walking around but it was never enough, she wasn’t a part of the crowd she was watching as the ants ready to be crushed, rushed around. She sat upright in one quick motion and thought to herself. ‘The whole house is gone and the town will all be gathered so going out won’t be a risk to anyone, a perfect day to go out.’ Three days away she thought and her anticipation grew with each day.
Two days left.
One day left.
“Have fun but you better make sure to take a thousand and more pictures or I will never forgive you!” Adely yelled across the yard at her father.
He waved his hand and gave her a gentle smile getting into the car. When the car was no longer visible Adley rummaged through her closet to find the perfect outfit so she wouldn’t be noticed though the sun was shining it was still a dark day. She threw her curly non-existent color black hair up into a ponytail and pinned back her bangs. A navy blue shirt with holes, and her purple skinny jeans her sister sent her last spring. She pulled on her dark black wedges she loved to wear and headed out the door.
Knowing everyone would be at the festival she was eager to walk all throughout the woods by herself finally seeing things she couldn’t with her family always watching her every move. She came to a stop, looking over the whole place. A cliff like always but a different one. She felt like she was a new person. From a different perspective she loved the world, even if it was just a few steps down from her always watchful cliff of hers. She sat and took in the vast sky and the changing scenery all around her. WHACK!!!!! Adley froze in fear. She slowly turned and her eyes grew wide as she saw what made the noise behind her.
