Chapter 1

Elmwood, Wisconsin

Chris's POV

We just moved here from Minnesota. Elmwood is a pretty odd place, to say the least. At least in my neighborhood, there are hardly any kids. Mostly, middle aged people. My parents were getting settled into our new home. I gazed at my father's blue 1975 Lincoln Continental coupe, with a Minnesota license plate, as I was waiting for the bus to arrive. A chilly breeze blew in from Lake Superior. This part of Wisconsin was prone to lake effect snow showers during the winter.

The bus finally arrived, and I got on. I sat down next to a boy, with short, brown hair, and blue eyes. He didn't seem to be interested in a conversation, as he was busy listening to music on his phone. The bus finally took off, and was headed towards Elmwood High.

Here it was. The school I was now gonna be a part of. I stepped off the bus, with my backpack, thumping on my back, as I walked up the steps into the enormous brick building with Elmwood High School, imprinted in bold capital letters. I was greeted by the chatter of students, and lockers opening and closing.

A few boys gave me a weird look, as if I was some kind of alien from a different planet. Then, a woman with dark skin, and black glasses noticed me.

"Are you Chris Smith?" she asked.

"Yes, Ma'am," I said.

"Ah, welcome to Elmwood High! Let me show you to your Homeroom! Follow me, if you please!"

I followed this woman to my Homeroom. I walked up the stairs to the 300 hallway. She showed me to Room 308, and herself as Mrs. Johnson. "I'm Mrs. Johnson, and if you ever need anything, please don't hesitate to ask!"

"Okay," I said. I sat down, and just stared blankly. What about my locker? I haven't been assigned a locker yet. My Homeroom teacher, Mr. Garcia, didn't pay me any attention, as his face was buried in some paperwork. As the rest of the students was staring at me, I tried to keep a straight face. I twirled my blonde hair, as I was trying to settle in.

What a way to be treated as a new student.
