Short Story

I was the ripe old age of twenty-one when the universe decided I should die. Of course, the universe being the asshole that it is, I wasn’t allowed to rest. It’s very weird to watch everyone mourn your closed casket. Weirder still to hug your grieving father only for him to no longer recognise you.

I knew I couldn’t stomach going home after that.

It took some time, but I found others like me. Lost souls, wandering through the world, seen but not known. Eventually, they taught me why I was still here.

Which is how I found my way to you.

You, gloriously old and bewildered. A man whose body told stories in wrinkles and scars. A man who dwelled in a home filled with photos of loved ones. A man who sat alone in the dark, by a fire.

You welcomed me into your home and I accepted graciously. I could see you didn’t know who I was.

Was it embarrassment that kept you from asking?

I made us tea and sat opposite you, we chatted about your sons and your late wife. Your eyes twinkled when you spoke of them. I saw the memories bring a sharpness back to you.

I’m grateful I got to be a part of that.

Eventually, you mustered up the courage to ask. “I’m so sorry.” A mumble. “I must have forgotten. Happens sometimes.” Your lidded eyes drooped. “Could you remind me as to who you are and why you’re here?”

I placed the mug of tea aside and stood, taking your hands and pulling you to your feet. Your bones creaked and you began to protest but I had you now, you were safe. We danced to music that played in your head, all your old favourites.

“Do you know the saying ‘A Date with Destiny,’” I began, spinning in the reclaimed strength of your arms. “And a Dance with-”

“Death.” Your broken lips pursed. “It’s time then?”

“We can dance as long as you’d like.” I kept a gentle and well practiced smile on my lips.

“Does it hurt?” The same question countless others uttered before you.

“Not one bit.”

We danced for hours and laughed as we did so. It wasn’t until the sun began to rise that you kissed me on the cheek and I brought our dance to a close.
