1 - Two Peas in a Pod
As children, David and Mason were inseparable. From building forts to chasing each other around the playground, they did everything together. They were the best of friends, each other’s confidants, their support system. No matter what life threw their way, they knew they had each other.
Growing up in the same neighborhood, they had the same interests, went to the same schools, and even took the same classes. They knew everything about each other, from their favorite color to their deepest fears. They were comfortable with each other, and their friendship had always been effortless.
But now, as they entered high school, things were beginning to change. They were no longer children, and with puberty came a wave of confusing emotions. They still cared deeply for each other, but there was something different in the air. They couldn’t quite put their finger on it, but they both felt it, and it was starting to make things awkward between them.
Despite their best efforts, things were not the same between David and Mason. They still care for each other as before, but there was an undercurrent of tension that was hard to ignore. David found himself stealing glances at Mason when he wasn’t looking, admiring the way his hair fell over his forehead, the curve of his smile, the way his eyes crinkled when he laughed. He tried to push these thoughts away, but they kept creeping back in.
Meanwhile, Mason was starting to take an interest in girls. David felt a pang of jealousy every time Mason talked about a girl he liked or went on a date. He tried to hide it, but he couldn’t help feeling hurt that Mason was interested in someone else. David wondered if Mason would still be his friend if he knew he had a crush on him.
As the weeks went by, David found himself spending more time alone, lost in thought. He tried to focus on his schoolwork, but he found himself distracted, daydreaming about Mason. He knew he couldn’t tell anyone about his feelings, not even his closest friends. He didn’t want to risk losing Mason’s friendship or making things awkward between them.
One day, as they were walking home from school, Mason brought up the subject of their friendship.
“Do you think things are different between us now?” he asked, looking at David with a worried expression. David took a deep breath and tried to put his feelings into words.
“I don’t know,” he said finally. “I just feel like we’re not as close as we used to be.”
Mason nodded, looking relieved that David felt the same way.
“I miss how things used to be,” he said.
“I miss our inside jokes and staying up all night talking. Do you think we can ever get that back?” David looked at him, feeling a surge of emotion.
“I hope so,” he said, his voice barely above a whisper.
But even as they talked, David knew that there was something he wasn’t saying. He couldn’t bring himself to tell Mason about his feelings, and he was scared that it would ruin their friendship. So he kept quiet, hoping that things would somehow work themselves out.
The following afternoon, when the sun was shining brightly, it was announced that their P.E. classes were going to be combined because of the absence of a substitute teacher, and they were going to play a game of football.
David and Mason were both looking forward to the game, and they chatted excitedly as they made their way to the field. They have not played together ever since 7th grade.
“I hope we’re on the same team,” Mason said, grinning at David.
“We could show everyone what we’re made of.” David laughed, feeling a rush of adrenaline.
“Bring it on,” he said, clenching his fists.
“We’re going to crush them.”
As they stepped onto the field, they could see that the other players were already warming up. They looked tough and confident, and David couldn’t help but feel a little intimidated. But he knew that he had to keep his game face on if he wanted to win.
“Let’s do this,” he said, looking at Mason with determination.
Mason nodded, and the two of them jogged over to join the others. As they lined up on the field, David could feel his heart pounding in his chest. He knew that this was going to be a tough game, but he was ready for it.
“Come on,” he said, egging on the other team. “We’re waiting for you.”
The other team smirked, and the game began. The ball flew back and forth, and David and Mason ran after it with all their might. They were both good at football, and they worked together seamlessly.
“Here!” David shouted, throwing the ball to Mason. “Go for it!”
Mason caught the ball, and he raced down the field with lightning speed. David watched in awe as he weaved in and out of the other players, making it look effortless.
“Yes!” he shouted, pumping his fist in the air. “That’s what I’m talking about!”
But even as he celebrated, David knew that the game was far from over. The other team was determined to win, and they were playing harder than ever. David could feel the sweat dripping down his face, and his legs were starting to ache.
“Come on, guys,” he said, looking at his team. “We can do this. We just have to push a little harder.”
And with that, the game continued. The players ran up and down the field, their breaths coming in short gasps. David and Mason worked tirelessly, passing the ball back and forth, until finally, the whistle blew, signaling the end of the game.
David collapsed onto the ground, panting heavily. He could hear the other players cheering and laughing, but he was too exhausted to move. He looked over at Mason, who was grinning widely, and he knew that they had won.
“We did it,” he said, laughing in disbelief. “We actually did it.”
But even as he celebrated, David couldn’t shake the feeling that something was off. He had noticed the way that Mason had looked at him during the game, and he couldn’t help but wonder what it meant. Was it just the adrenaline, or was there something more? David didn’t know, but he was determined to find out.
As the final bell rang, signaling the end of the school day, David eagerly approached Mason, ready to invite him over to his house to celebrate their victory. But before he could say anything, Mason cut him off, explaining that he had already made plans to go out for ice cream with Casey, one of his closest friends. David tried not to let his disappointment show as he wished Mason a good time and headed off towards his own house. As he walked, he couldn’t help but wonder who this Casey girl was and why she seemed to be taking up so much of Mason’s time lately.
David’s thoughts were interrupted by the sound of his phone buzzing in his pocket. He pulled it out to see a text from Mason, apologizing for having to cancel their plans but promising to make it up to him soon. David smiled at the message, feeling a warmth in his chest that he couldn’t quite explain. He typed out a quick reply, telling Mason not to worry about it and to have fun with his friend. As he hit send, he couldn’t help but wonder if there was something more to Mason’s relationship with this girl than just friendship.
The sun was beginning to set as David arrived at his house, his mind still spinning with thoughts of Mason and Casey. He decided to distract himself by reading books and doing school works, but even that didn’t seem to help. As he flipped through his textbooks, he couldn’t help but think about how much he missed spending time with Mason. It had been two years since they had played football together, and he had forgotten how much fun it could be.
David sighed and reached for his diary, grabbing a pen and scribbling down his thoughts. He wondered if Mason had enjoyed playing football with him as much as he had. Maybe it was just the rush of adrenaline that they both felt, but he couldn’t shake the feeling that there was something more. He couldn’t deny the special connection he felt with Mason. But he can never imagine anything from Mason. He KNOWS that Mason is straight, even straighter than David’s A’s.
As he closed his diary, David’s phone buzzed with a notification. It is from his “close friend”, Mason. He glanced down and saw a post from Mason. In the picture there was Mason holding the ice cream for the girl, just like they were dating.
“Sweet treat, sweet girl,” it said on the caption.
David couldn’t help but feel a twinge of jealousy as he read the message. What does the caption suppose to mean? It might be that they are just really close and this is normal for them. But he still can’t help thinking. As he see in the Instagram post, Casey is a very beautiful girl. She had short, black hair, a slender frame, and a tall stature that made her stand out in a crowd. David also heard that she is really clever and has a captivating personality. Casey is everything of Mason’s type of girl. And now they were spending so much time together. Its supposed to be his time with Mason, not Casey’s, David thought.
David sat in silence, lost in his own thoughts, until he heard a knock on his bedroom door. He quickly closed his diary and put it away, turning his attention to the present.
“Come in,” he called out. The door opened to reveal his mom, who smiled warmly at him.
“Hey honey, just wanted to say congrats on the football game,” she said, sitting down on his bed.
David nodded, feeling grateful for her presence. He didn’t want his mom to see how he felt towards Mason. Even though his family is filled with traditional ideas and fixed mindset, he is still afraid of what’s going to happen if he say the truth.
-Mason’s side-
Mason and Casey finished their ice cream and started walking around the park. The sun was setting, casting a warm glow across the grass. Casey looked over at Mason and smiled.
“You seem really happy,” she said.
Mason nodded, feeling content. “Yeah, it was great to play football with David again. We used to do it all the time when we were kids.”
Casey tilted her head, curious. “Why don’t you play together anymore?”
Mason hesitated for a moment before answering. “Just life, I guess. We both got busy with school and other things.”
Casey nodded understandingly. As they walked, Mason noticed the leaves on the trees starting to turn orange and red. Fall was his favorite season - everything felt so cozy and comforting. He wondered what David was doing at home, if he was writing in his diary again. Mason felt guilty for not hanging out with David, but he also don’t want to stand Casey down. He really liked Casey, she have been a close friend since middle school.
Eventually, the sun disappeared completely and the park lights turned on, illuminating the walkways. Mason and Casey made their way back to her car, chatting and laughing along the way. As they said goodbye, Mason felt a pang of loneliness - he wished he could have hung out with David tonight. But he pushed the feeling aside and hugged Casey tightly.
“Thanks for coming out with me,” he said, smiling.
“Anytime,” she replied, returning the smile.
-David’s side-
David was sitting on his bed, staring at his phone. He had just received a text from Mason inviting him over to do homework. David’s heart skipped a beat - he couldn’t believe Mason wanted to spend more time with him. He quickly typed out a response, trying to sound casual even though he was bursting with excitement.
As he hit send, David couldn’t help but imagine all the things they could do together - maybe they could watch a movie or play video games after they finished their homework. The possibilities seemed endless. David’s mind raced with excitement and anticipation as he waited for Mason’s response.
The response came as a big selfie of Mason’s face appeared. In the picture, Mason was smiling beautifully with a thumb up.
“Can’t wait for tomorrow!” Mason texted.
David’s heart fluttered as he read the text. He felt a surge of joy and gratitude that he had such a great friend in Mason. The thought of spending time with him made David feel alive and excited. He replayed their football game in his mind, picturing their every move and the rush of adrenaline they both felt. As the sun began to set outside his window, David closed his diary with a smile, feeling grateful for the day and excited for what tomorrow would bring.
