Chapter 1
As he walked towards the door, Toprak was feeling happy. He was also a bit excited because he was going to meet someone new. He had heard the name of this person before at different times. This was a woman. If she was talked about so much, she must have had some special power or something. Who was this woman that was constantly mentioned? He felt uneasy to share the attention with someone else. This woman didn’t have to be that important anyway. But he couldn’t stop himself from being curious. When he reached the door, he pressed the bell without hesitation. He didn’t want to slow down or stop now. He had enjoyed his success today so much that he felt extremely powerful. He felt like he could do anything in the world, he felt invincible.
As the door slowly opened, he started to feel a slight breeze that he could barely feel at first, but then hit him in the face. What was this now? Had he been hit? Was his sense of time distorted? Or had his brain started to work faster than usual? He didn’t have time to answer these questions. Actually, there was no such thing as time anymore...
Toprak had frozen for a moment, but Charles, who knew his mind better than himself, growled to urge him to continue. Because unlike Toprak, Charles saw a problem in these feelings. First, he remembered to smile, then he greeted his friend. Or so he thought. Maybe it was just the nonsense grumbling that could be heard from the outside. “This is not the first time I’ve experienced this,” he said to himself. “Stay calm, it was a tiring day. Maybe if I take a few deep breaths...” But this was just a wish. However, Charles knew better than Toprak what was happening. How could he not know? He could experience what he felt and thought in their purest form by wandering around the convolutions of his brain. But he couldn’t intervene. Only up to a point...
As Toprak stepped inside, he greeted his close friend and handed him a bottle of wine he had brought along. “I got it from your favorite brand, so I hope you have also brought something I like,” he said with a smile. “I’m Selene,” the girl said, extending her hand. Trying to think quickly, he gave the cunning answer that came to his mind first, “I’m Endymion,” he said sarcastically, shaking her hand. He never missed the opportunity to flirt with a beautiful woman. When his sentence was over, he saw the shocking surprise on the beautiful woman’s face. What a flawless face it was. When he saw the unsettling surprise in Selene’s eyes, Toprak became worried. “It’s the first time I’ve met someone named Selene, maybe you know this, but in mythology, there is a moon goddess named Selene and another person named Endymion, and...” Charles must have been unable to bear his host’s embarrassing nonsense, as he heard Toprak’s grin turn into laughter. “One person? Endymion, the one you referred to as ‘someone,’ is one of the greatest lovers in mythology, dear brother. Did you think it was appropriate to introduce yourself as Endymion in honor of this woman whose name you just learned? Your confidence can only take you halfway. You are a fool.” Toprak’s face flushed with embarrassment. He was lost for words.
“Sorry, I’m a bit tired,” he said. At first, there was a half-hearted expression of embarrassment on his face, but then he decided that being confident would be more useful and changed his facial expression halfway through. And Selene’s facial expression turned into a semi-sincere smile in a fraction of a second, “Nice to meet you too, no problem. Yes, I know where my name comes from. I was surprised that you didn’t know.” Charles wasn’t satisfied with her explanation. He had sensed that there was something unusual about this girl, but it was too early to articulate it. Besides, who was he to be so noteworthy? Nevertheless, when Toprak had seen this woman, Charles had noticed the thoughts in his head and the feeling in his stomach. He had to be careful, that was for sure.
