Summary

When Hannah Schwartz brings her husband and young sons on a family vacation to Bethany Beach, Delaware, the last thing she expects is to run into Luke Powell, her ex-boyfriend and once the deepest love of her life. On her first morning at the beach, however, while grocery shopping to stock the beach house with food, Hannah bumps straight into Luke. When Luke tells her that although he is married to another woman, he still loves her, Hannah is guiltily thrilled because she has never been able to get Luke off her mind. Luke’s confession catapults Hannah into crisis. Nine years before, she gave him up when her beloved South African Jewish immigrant parents threatened to disown her if they stayed together. Although now she is all grown up, a portrait painter married to a man who checked her parents’ boxes, her husband lacks the passion she and Luke shared. Yet her father now faces terminal cancer, and Hannah can’t imagine how her parents would react to hearing that Luke has reappeared in her life. Hannah has everything to gain in reuniting with her first and deepest love. But with a spouse and children and a father she once revered whom she desperately needs to get closer to before he dies, she also has more than everything to lose.

PART ONE

Shorebirds are small to medium-sized birds that take advantage of a variety of habitats for migration and nesting. They are uniquely adapted to aquatic environments such as ocean shores, rivers, lakes and marshes.

Shorebirds can forage at different water depths based on the length of their legs. They can access food at various soil and water depths due to the length and shape of their bills.

Some shorebirds live their entire lifecycle in one region. Others migrate between breeding and wintering grounds each year. Some migratory shorebirds fly great distances, spanning multiple continents and hemispheres, making stops at key sites to rest along the way.
