Chapter 1
The kingdom of Wyvern was an enchantingly peaceful place. Amity was known throughout the land as being a place of beauty and wonder. The kingdom sat just at the edge of the brilliantly blooming Petal throne forest. Winter had just passed, but already the trees had already started to sprout gorgeous little pink buds that would come to decorate the trees and the kingdom in a lovely layer of flowers.
As for the people of the kingdom; many cultures often came to Wyvern as a way to feel safe from the struggles of the world. They all joined together within buildings of wood and stone to share their different ways. Whether it is Bows and swords, military and magic, or even farming and forging; this flower of unity, shined the brightest ray of light in this dark-stained world.
At the centre of this magnificent kingdom lay a castle that served as an academy that taught whoever deemed themselves worthy to become defenders of the kingdom. The masters who taught here devoted themselves to turning these young novices into mages, knights and rangers who would one day protect the good people of the land and hopefully be able to stamp out the darkness that plagued the land, once and for all.
From spear combat to marksmanship, potion brewing to the summoning arts; the lessons taught within this castle’s classrooms ensured that every generation would be able to combat whatever threat came forward.
A young girl sat in one such classroom. Her name was Katherine, but many people just called her ‘Kate’ for short. Many of the boys at Wyvern thought she was cute. They liked her petite figure and long, soft blonde-white hair, but what really set her apart was her intelligence. She was enrolled in nearly every scholastic class and topped them all. She wore an emerald robe, the attire of a mage. She didn’t like glamour or jewellery, all she would wear was what she was supposed to. Her philosophy was that if she didn’t spend her time caught up with what to wear, she could have more time to study. Many thought she was a genius at everything, but she was hopefully awkward and shy towards others, though, in spite of that, she was a curious person, always wondering about theories and possibilities. Unfortunately, her curiosity sometimes got her into sticky and sometimes, explosive situations.
Her lovely violet eyes were deep in her book, as she scribbled down the notes that her class instructor spoke. His name was Professor Brooks. He was a tall, yet skinny man; the kind of man you would think to see as a ventriloquist store owner, but she liked him. What he lacked in appearance, he made up for in his teaching abilities and enthusiastic behaviour
“And now,” he spoke, as he scanned his semi-attentive class “From this formula, what will be the resultant alchemy solution?”
There was a small murmur in the class as the students tried to get the cogs in their heads to turn, but a few moments after, Kate raised her arm to the sky
Brooks smiled, “Yes Ms Katherine?”
“The resultant will be a potion of Eel skin.” She replied
Mr Brooks nodded “Right as always, you are” He chuckled. The echo of the castle’s clock tower, through its halls, told the class that the day’s lessons were over and that it was time to either return home or return to their dorms. The students had already started to leave but Mr Brooks felt the need to remind them to study up on the different ways that people utilised pixie dust.
Kate watched on as Mr Brooks sat back into his seat and listened to his students groan from the thought of extra work. For some reason that sounds always made him chuckle. She approached his desk with a bright smile, eager to hear what he thought of the alchemy paper she’d submitted a few days back
“Professor, did you finally have time to read my report on turning purple snail mucus into lantern oil?”
The professor smiled and nodded, which just made her even more excited.
“Ah, yes my dear. An excellent report” He applauded with a hearty chuckle “Not that I would expect anything else from a scholar like you.”
She bowed her head to conceal a blush. Many people would usually boast about their achievements but Kate always felt sort of embarrassed whenever people praised her.
“And this scholar is as humble as ever!” Mr Brooks once again chuckled “Don’t worry my dear, you just keep yourself in check and do your homework, Amity knows that we don’t need another Octavian.”
She nodded and allowed the blush to flow away. Mr Brooks was always true to his words
“Thanks, professor,” She smiled, as she slowly walked to the door “I better get going; my lesson with Headmaster Sophia starts in five minutes.”
Mr Brooks nodded with understanding and gave her a wave goodbye before he seemed to instantly fall asleep.
As she exited the classroom, Kate couldn’t help but give a small giggle as Mr Brooks started to snore loudly. Teachers like him were one in a million
