Chapter 1
It was never meant to be like this. Brooklynn never meant to hurt her bestfriend. She never intended to be this type of person.
“Come on Brooklynn”, Ashley said as she dragged Brooklynn into the club with her. Brooklynn scanned the room getting anxious at all the people dancing, the bright lights flashing, and the loud laughter that filled the room. The smell of alcohol lingering in the air made her want to vomit.
While walking farther into the building with Ashley, Brooklynn mumbled under her breath, “How did I let you convince me to come here”? Ashley hearing that chuckled softly and turned to Brooklynn while smiling, “Because you love me and you know we’re going to have fun”.
Before she could even get a word out Ashley yelled over the music “Look at those boys Brooke”! Brooke was unfazed by that, Ashley was always trying to find fresh love interests. “What about them”?
Not being able to hear her best friend's soft voice over the music she yelled “Speak up”! Brooklynn sighed and talked a bit louder “What about them”!
“We need to go talk to them”!
Brooklynn couldn’t lie to herself, she did want love she even craved it at times. Although she never acted on this because she didn’t feel worthy of receiving love. The raw, life-changing type of love.
“I don’t know if we should ash”!
Ashley rolled her eyes “Come on Brooke, live a little”!
Before she had time to protest Ashley grabbed her hand and lugged her over to the two handsome boys.
“Hi I’m Ashley, and this is Brooklynn”. The boys looked the girls up and down. “Well, how are you pretty girls doing”?
Brooklynn opened her mouth to talk but Ashley cut her off. “I’m pretty good, what’s your names”? Once again all the attention was on Ashley.
Brooklynn, feeling disappointed again stepped away and found a quieter place in the club, feeling like she could breathe again.
She sat down at a table, visualizing what it would be like to feel good enough, to feel worthy, to feel like what she had to say mattered.
“Hey, are you ok”?
Hearing the new voice made Brooklynn snap back into reality. “Yes, I’m fine,” she said looking up at the blonde standing before her.
Pointing to the seat in front of Brooklynn “Can I sit” she asked?
“Yes, of course”.
The blonde pulled the chair out and sat across from Brooklynn. “I’m Katelynn”.
“I’m Brooklynn, it’s nice to meet you”.
“Well Brooklynn, why do you look so sad you’re in a club it’s supposed to be fun”?
Brooke shook her head softly and looked down at the table “Oh it’s nothing, just some stuff with my friend”.
Katelynn smiled and looked into Brooklynn’s emerald green eyes, “Well it’s pretty quiet in here and we have all night, why don’t you let me help”.
Brooke was very confused by this whole situation, but she just looked up and started to talk. “Her name is Ashley, she’s been my best friend since kindergarten”. A part of Brooklynn felt wrong for gossiping about Ashley while she was not here, but she quickly pushed that feeling away and continued. “Well we were talking to two boys tonight and she made all the attention be on her”.
“Why don’t you say something to her”?
A man walked over to the table and sat down. “Oh sorry am I interrupting girl talk”?
Katelynn rolled her eyes at him jokingly, “I’m sorry Brooklynn, this is my boyfriend Colton but please continue”.
She nodded “Uh I don’t know, I can’t say anything to her, it might hurt her feelings”.
“But what she’s doing is hurting your feelings right”? Katelynn could tell this conversation was making Brooklynn feel a bit awkward, but she wanted to help her as much as she could.
Brooke reached for her phone in her pocket and checked the time and saw that she had a text from Ashley saying “Where are you”?
“Oh I have to take off Ashley’s trying to find me but it was nice talking to you, thank you”.
“Wait”. Katelynn wrote her phone number down on a napkin and gave it to Brooklynn “Call me if you ever need someone to talk to”. Brooklynn grinned at her sweetly “Thank you I will”.
Brooklynn stepped away from the table feeling bewildered but also hopeful. Maybe Katelynn and her could be friends.
