Chapter 1

What if? Once upon a Time

The Wolf who ate Grandmother, then Little Red Riding Hood is not just a fairy tale. It is true that a Wild Wolf tried to eat Grandmother dear and then tried to eat Red.

Red carried her Basket of goodies to Grandmother dears House. This was in the middle of the Great Famine of 1315 to 1319. Grandmother dear was sick with malnutrition. Red and her Mother were a little more fortunate than Grandmother dear. Red’s Mother was able to trade their Milk Cow for fresh fruits and vegetables. They ate what they could. Then Red’s Mother sent Red with her Basket to Grandmother dears House in hopes this would bring her back to health.

But did you know the Woodcutter who slay the Wolf was the Father of Hansel and Gretel? He did in fact save Grandmother dear and Red’s life. She was so grateful that she gave the Picnic Basket full of goodies to the Woodcutter. He took just enough to feed his Family. Grandmother dear ate what was left and this saved her from starvation.

The woodcutter also carried away the carcass of the Wolf. His Family ate their share of the goodie basket. The Mother butchered the Wolf and her Family had meat for the first time in more than a year. They ate their fill of the Wolf, the rest was salted to preserve this meat. The Father put this meat into a canvas bag and stored it under the floorboards of their small Cottage. The Mother made overcoats from the Wolf Hide to protect them against the upcoming brutal winter.

They had to hide the Wolf meat in fear that if others knew of this they may break into the small Cottage and steal this. Others may even kill the Family because of their hoarding methods.

Of course this is a tale made up by myself. But what if, Once Upon a Time it was true?
