Healer
Sophie stared blankly at the rain tapping against her window. She could hear her father’s muffled cries from the next room, the sound of despair that had become all too familiar. It was all too much to bear. Life had become nothing but a series of hardships that seemed to come one after another, with no end in sight.
She remembered the first time she had felt the pain that now filled her soul. It was when her mother passed away, a sudden illness that had taken her away from the family she loved so much. Sophie was only fourteen at the time, and it was as if the light had been snuffed out of her life. Her mother was her best friend, and she had always been there to lift her spirits and offer words of encouragement when times got tough. Now, Sophie felt like she was all alone, lost in a world that no longer made sense.
As if losing her mother wasn’t enough, her father soon became ill with a mysterious disease that left him bedridden and unable to work. Sophie and her younger brother were left to fend for themselves, scraping by on what little they could earn from odd jobs around their small village. The constant struggle to survive had taken its toll on Sophie, and she was exhausted. She longed for a way out of the never-ending cycle of poverty and hardship.
One day, Sophie decided to take a walk through the nearby woods. She needed to clear her head and escape from the oppressive atmosphere of her home. As she walked, she stumbled upon an old woman who was tending to a garden. Sophie was immediately struck by the woman’s kindness, and they struck up a conversation. It turned out that the old woman was a healer, and she invited Sophie to sit with her and share her troubles.
Sophie poured out her heart to the old woman, telling her about the pain of losing her mother and the constant struggle to survive. The healer listened intently, nodding sympathetically as Sophie spoke. When Sophie finished, the old woman offered her a small vial of clear liquid.
“This is a special potion,” the old woman said. “It will ease your pain and help you find the strength to carry on.”
Sophie was skeptical, but she was desperate for any kind of relief. She thanked the old woman and took the vial home with her. That night, when her father’s cries became too much to bear, Sophie drank the potion. Almost immediately, she felt a sense of calm wash over her. It was as if a heavy weight had been lifted from her shoulders. For the first time in months, Sophie was able to sleep soundly.
Over the next few weeks, Sophie continued to visit the old woman and take the potion. Each time, she felt stronger and more capable of facing the challenges of her life. She even began to see a glimmer of hope for the future.
One day, however, Sophie went to visit the old woman and found her garden empty. She knocked on the door of the old woman’s cottage, but there was no answer. Sophie was worried that something had happened to her friend, so she pushed open the door and stepped inside.
What she found there would haunt her for the rest of her life. The old woman lay on the floor, her body twisted and broken. It was clear that she had been attacked and left for dead. Sophie was horrified, and she couldn’t understand why anyone would want to hurt the gentle healer.
As she stood there in shock, she noticed a small piece of paper lying on the old woman’s desk. She picked it up and read the words scrawled on it in a shaky hand: “They will come for you next.”
Sophie was terrified. Who would want to harm her? She had never done anything to hurt anyone.
