Chapter 1

Evelyn POV:

“Agghh, such a grumpy man,” I said to myself with a grimace as I sat down.

Why does he consistently exhibit such behaviour? Couldn’t he be a bit more considerate? As I settled into my seat, these thoughts occupied my mind. The constant unpleasant demeanour of my CEO irked me; he could be quite snide on several occasions. Despite my dislike for him, I recognised the importance of excelling in my role as a personal assistant. After all, I need to secure my own well-being. The challenges of being an orphan make it hard to trust, creating moments of difficulty. However, I’m fortunate to have a steadfast friend in Idami, who has been my constant support, and she means the world to me.

Announcement: Miss Evelyn, come to my office!

I once again went to Mr. Hadden’s cabin. He was seated on his couch next to his cabinet.

“How can I help you, sir?” I said with a stern expression, hoping he would sense my feelings, although I knew he probably didn’t care.

“I apologise, Miss Evelyn, for being a bit insolent,” he said with a firm expression while going through the documents.

“No problem, sir. Is there anything I can help you with?” I said with a stern face.

“Miss Evelyn, come and sit here,” he said politely while looking at me.

I was stunned to see his tone change, though I was very content with that apology.

“Yes, sir, I’m coming,” I said politely with a smile as I sat in front of him.

His captivating hazel eyes, neatly styled buzz cut, defined sharp jawline, towering physique, and well-toned muscles make quite an impression. I find myself admiring the way his biceps strain against the fabric of his shirt; it’s hard not to appreciate his attractiveness. Despite being completely taken by his physical features, I realise I should maintain composure and not succumb to simply crushing on his physique.

“Miss Evelyn, are you done with the staring?” He said with a smirk.

“Sorry, sir, I was thinking of something,” I said out of embarrassment.

“Are you contemplating something, or me?” He chuckled as he said it.

Agghh, this man is so irksome, but he looks so striking while smiling; right now, I’m melting.

“No, sir, nothing like that; is there anything I can do for you?”

“Please postpone today’s meeting and reschedule it for tomorrow at 11 a.m.,” he said with a composed face.

“Ok, sir, I understand,” I said politely.

“Now you can leave, Miss Evelyn,” he said.

Is that all he wanted to say? I guess he could have said that while I was standing. What was the point of making me sit beside him? Such a dumb bear.

I left his cabin; though he’s grumpy, he’s also a bit affable.

So it was almost 5 p.m., so I gathered my things and went out to see Mr. Hadden. As I could see from his window, he was still working. I knocked on the door, waiting for a response.

“Come in,” he said while writing something on a piece of paper.

“Sir, it’s time to leave,” I said with a smile.

“Oh, yes, wait a minute; I’m coming,” he said.

Indeed, he’s very industrious when it comes to work.

We left the office.

“Goodbye, Mr. Hadden.” I smiled.

“Goodbye, Miss Evelyn,” he said with a composed face.

I drove to my flat; it’s a bit run-down, but in the future, I’ll undoubtedly purchase a better flat. I knocked because I knew it was Idami’s day off and she would be at home.

Upon entering my apartment, you’ll find a cosy living room adjacent to a well-equipped kitchen on the left end. Moving straight ahead, there are two bedrooms – one on the left (which belongs to Idami) and the other on the right (my own haven). Each bedroom boasts its own private bathroom, adding a touch of convenience to the overall layout.

“How was your day, girl?” She asked me with a smile.

“Not very good because that grumpy bear scolded me in front of the entire staff for misplacing a few important documents; I know my mistake, but I felt very humiliated,” I explained.

“And then?” she asked.

I responded with relief, “He did apologise, even though I wasn’t expecting him to.”

“Great! At least he apologised, which is something new,” she said with amusement.

“Yeah, whatever; I’m going to freshen up; see you later,” I said as I entered my room.

After freshening up, I reclined on my bed, seeking respite from the day’s exertions. An hour’s nap recharged my energy before Idami summoned me for a snack. We engaged in a pleasant conversation, and later, I retired to my room. Tomorrow looms with the task of preparing the conference room for an upcoming meeting. This time, I am determined not to give that grumpy bear any opportunity to belittle me.

When thoughts of him cross my mind, I envision a confident, bold, industrious, and composed individual. Despite my occasional mistakes that could potentially lead to termination, he has displayed considerable tolerance. I question my suitability as his secretary, believing there are many more qualified individuals. Yet, he consistently extends consideration, perhaps owing to our age difference—I’m 23, and he’s 29. Undoubtedly, having him around will be an invaluable learning experience.
