Chapter 1 : MEG

I washed the dishes, mopped the floor, vacuumed the rug, cleaned Mother’s room, and scrubbed the toilet. Still, I got no credit. It’s not like I’m complaining that no one will see or talk about it, it’s that my mother takes the credit for my hard work. But still, she is my mother, I keep saying to myself.

I dropped down on the couch exhausted. My favorite news anchor, Thomas Brown was preaching about finding the right first job on the news and it so happens that I intend on getting a job, my first one to be precise.

“Looking for a job? In need of money? Or in debt? Here at MGB News 5 Thomas Brown has all the latest in finding the first job.”

“Thanks, Toby! So, folks, a big convention is occurring at the Skyline National Real Estate Agency. Anyone could try to get a job there and work for the one and only, Vihaan Jay. Just remember to bring your resumes! Back to you Toby.”

“Thanks, Thom, so back to today’s news, there was a shooting at the Riverside Bank this evening- “

Man, an opportunity to work at Skyline National Real Estate would be amazing! But I didn’t have the experience nor the social status. I continued watching the news, many bad things had been happening. Shootings, robberies, break-ins, and even murders, all from the same organization, The Baddies.

“Oh, Meggannn! Do you like this dress? Or this one– wait what are you doing get off your big behind and make yourself useful!” Mother carried an elegant black gown in her right hand and a yellow floral dress in the other.

I nodded then rushed up to fix the couch for the thousandth time.

Sitting down at the library with a couple of books at hand, both Kari and I are researching the mysterious Vihaan Jay and his background. Man, this guy is fascinating as he is handsome!!

Kari giggled.

I dropped the book and looked up at Kari. “Watcha giggling about?”

“Nothing you need to know,”

“What is that supposed to mean?” I asked, a smile creeping up my face.

“I shouldn’t have to tell you everything that happens in my life!” Kari dropped her book accidentally, revealing a phone in her hands.

“Oh,” I said, my smile vanishing in an instant. The whole room was silenced, which was my cue to continue reading. And so I did. The guy, Vihaan, is a very wealthy and apparently compassionate man according to this book. I kept reading fascinated, until I heard a notification from Kari’s phone and the giggles followed after. “The person must be really funny, right Kari?”

Kari continued giggling, ignoring my voice.

I humphed, which seemed to grab her attention, “ I said ‘The person must be really funny, right Kari?’”

She gave me a confused look.

I sighed, “The guy you are talking to.”

“What guy?”

“Fine, girl?”

“NOO!”

“Then, who in the world are you talking to?”

Kari looked at the phone, then at me, “No one you need to know.” She grabbed her things and stood up. “If you don’t mind, I will leave.”

I know she is hiding something, maybe her crazy stepmother texted her, or she is dating someone. Wait a sec, Kari dating someone, that’s out of the picture so it must be her stepmother.

As soon as she stood up, I grabbed her wrist. “Did your crazy stepmother text you?”

She yanked her hand, “What has gotten into you Meg? Did your mom do something to you?” She asked, sitting back down in her seat.

“One, no, my mother did not do anything to me. And two, are you sure your mother didn’t text you?”

Step-mother, and no!”

“Just tell me anything that is going on, I’m your friend.”

Kari looked at her phone, avoiding eye contact, “Fine, I’m seeing someone……”

Kari, dating. She must be forced or something cause’ she would be the last person on the list to be dating.

“Do you want to know his name?”

I perked up, “You know I do! We could put the research to a side.”
