A little under four hundred years ago, the leaders of most countries felt it necessary to show their strength through the weapons arsenal they possessed. Ground vehicles and fighter jets were ubiquitous, nuclear weapons, on the other hand, not so much, but that didn’t mean they weren’t there.
Russia, China and America, three of the world’s largest powerhouses, were in possession of most of the nuclear weapons, and although things was fine for years and the biggest rulers mainly waged verbal wars, one day, now 378 years ago, things went horribly..., horribly wrong.
The bombs that fell at that time weren’t even the biggest problem, humanities worst disasters didn’t start until about half a year later.
The number of people who died during the first wave, as they called the nuclear bombings later in the history books, was less than half a million worldwide.
Half a year later another half a million people had died from the first effects of the radiation.
Due to the shock waves, but even more so because of the heat released by the bombs, the temperature changed significantly, and that was the main problem for the surviving humans.
First, the global temperature dropped by at least 5 degrees, in itself that didn’t seem like a big problem, but nature revolted and caused floods, earthquakes and more natural disasters, causing crops to rot, cattle to die, diseases to break out... Humanity was spared nothing.
After three years, it seemed as if nature was slowly recovering and the remaining humans thought they had overcome the worst.
Earth’s temperature rose and for a moment the world seemed to stabilize, but the temperature kept rising and rising. On average, temperatures around the world rose by at least ten to twelve, and in some countries as much as nineteen degrees Celsius.
In less than a decade after the first bomb fell, half the world had become one big, hot sandbox and the number of humans had dropped down to less than 400 million scattered around the world.
The brightest minds alive at the time were put together to form a think tank, and thanks to the technology they’d wanted to use to make life possible on Mars, large domes were set up in various places around the world.
These domes were able to accommodate thousands of people, but not everyone was admitted.
The radiation had caused side effects in some of the survivors, although this was not visible at first, in their male descendants, the changes were unmistakable.
Berserkers... That’s what these men were called.
At first, these men, who were taller, stronger than the common man, were universally praised and held in high esteem as the future of mankind. Their thick, leathery skin, sharp teeth and claws made them perfectly adapted for life in the hot wasteland that was now Earth, but the common man, the weaker one, eventually became afraid of this overwhelming competition, so much that they started to get the berserkers banished, hunted and even killed, and as there were too few berserkers to counter it the men became easy targets for the revenge of the common man.
The story hits off, when Rourke, a giant berserker, is apprehended after beating another berserker to death. Rourke is given no choice other than to fight in the arenas of the domes, for the amusement of the townsfolk.
Upon their arrival at one of the dome’s, the warriors are allowed to choose a woman who has to assist them in everything possible.
When given the choice, Rourke sets his mind on a small woman who observes him with curiosity rather than fear and disgust.
Together with Remoundalia (Rey), a widow who has fallen into the hands of the arena’s management thanks to her stepson, he must survive the dangers of the arena, while making plans to escape.
