The Invitation
My eyelids feel heavy against the sun rays penetrating through my window. I yawn and stretch in my single bed dreading the thought of leaving it. Every day appears to be the same yet daunting. My thoughts are interrupted by aggressive sounds of footsteps coming up the stairs. My mother yanks my door open looking at me dismissively.
'Gather yourself and come downstairs. There are matters we need to discuss Athena'. She orders, coldly and demanding before shutting the door.
My mother was a gentle woman, kind and merciful. Ever since my father left us she has turned her heart to stone or should I say towards me. I watch her interact with other people with respect and kindness but she cannot bear to look at me unless she is demanding something. Every day she blames me for my father leaving. She states his desire for children turned him dark and now she has to deal with me, without his support. My mother and father were mates, blessed by the Moon Goddess. When my father left, he subjected my mother to pain of both physical and emotional kind. Mated wolves to do not take kindly to separation. Their duty is to stay by each other's side and fulfill the mate bond until their death. My father broke the sacred mate bond long before.
I get up from my bed and walk into my little bathroom taking the brush from the bathroom vanity. I attempt to brush my long black hair that refuses to be tamed. I have always wondered from whom I inherited my thick, long black hair. Both of my parents are blonde with skin as white as ice while I am tan with darker features. I put my hair into a messy bun and walk downstairs still in my night gown.
My mother sits at the kitchen table, reading a book I have not noticed before. Her blonde long hair hugs her chest and I can see mother has not brushed it in several days.
'We have received an invitation to a ball Athena' she speaks without looking at me, her eyes glued to her book. 'We cannot refuse as it is a ceremony held by Lord Lucian'.
'Why would Lord Lucian invite us mother?' I say, unable to contain my curiosity. Lord Lucian is a leader of the Royal Lycan Army and oversees most of the American pack territory. He is the closest to the Queen and King of Lycan's situated in Russia. People feared him as he was known to be merciless.
'He has found his mate of choice and wishes to display his chosen in front of everybody. We are invited but are to stay out of spotlight. I cannot bear the whispers of other's again. ' she says before finally looking up from her book as she stares at me in disgust. 'You are to be invisible, if somebody asks about your father I need you to shut down that conversation quickly. It is embarrassing enough I have to bring the offspring of a traitor with me' she states coldly.
'I am your child too mother' I speak yet my words come out like a whisper.
'Unfortunately. The ball is tomorrow night and you need to be ready by 7. At the ball refer to me only as Diane.' With those words she walks out of the kitchen leaving me alone with my thoughts.
I go into my bedroom and change into jeans and a plain white top. My closet does not contain many clothes that are suitable for a ball so I decide to call my best friend Anna.
'Hey Anna' I utter as the line opens. Anna is from a neighbouring pack and the only friend I have. Everybody abandoned my mother and I when father left but Anna.
'Girl I am so excited for the ball tomorrow night. Hot masculine lycans, grrr' she squeals which produces a giggle from me.
'We need to go shopping, I have no clothes to wear Anna'
'We most certainly will, meet me at 3 at the mall? Anna utters before continuing leaving no space for my answer, 'Perhaps we find our mates tonight Athena. It has been 6 months since we turned 18 and neither of us has found our mate. Packs are getting nervous having unmated females around. It might attract rouge wolves.'
'You are right, my pack is looking for any excuse to throw my mother and I to the rogues but I fear the mate bond.' I utter truthfully 'It has destroyed my mother'.
Anna sighs on the other side of the line allowing creepy silence to fall between us.
I make my way to the shopping mall where I notice Anna waiting outside for me. She is a beautiful girl. Short and petite with long blonde hair. She has always been a target of unmated wolves in surrounding packs. Many of those same wolves never dared to come near me for the fear of dishonoring their family. My father was the Alpha of Blood Moon Pack. Six months prior to his disappearance he began to act out of character. He started to come home late then stopped coming back for days. When he finally would return he would take all of his frustration out on mother only to disappear again for days. He abandoned his duties as an Alpha of our pack and people began to worry. It wasn't until we woke up one morning to all of his belongings gone and a letter placed on the kitchen counter.
La mia bella, I hope one day you can forgive me for leaving you and Athena. It was a hard decision to make but one I had no choice in. There are bigger things coming and I am fighting hard to make our family the strongest force in the world. Please keep my Athena safe for I shall return for her one day.
Your Gabriel.
I am jerked out of my thoughts when Anna grabs me by the arm, chuckling like a child.
' Let's find some nice dresses for tonight, we have some hot lycans to impress' Anna says through a smirk. I chuckle at her remark, it will be a long afternoon.
