Prologue
02:37 am
Edinburg,
The silence of the night was ruined by the loud sound of sirens. What a pity for those near, or at least those who wanted a healthy amount of sleep.
The blue and red rays of the police lights broke down the comforting darkness and created a disturbing atmosphere, bringing only anxiety and anticipation. After all, there needed to be a serious reason, no, a disturbing reason for all that cacophony. Perhaps even the sky was sorrowful for the view below, because small cold drops like tears started falling on the ground.
And what an irony. Sin made in the house of God. Those were the first thoughts that passed through the mind of detective Kalista Umbra as she entered the large cathedral “St. Giles”. Beside some of her coworkers, the whole place was empty. The monotonous knocking of the woman’s heels against the marble floor echoed in the whole building, creating even thicker tension.
Soon those shoes stood right in front of the poor maiden, laying now cold on the ground with some medical and police workers around her. The detective’s eyes focused on the pale face of the young girl. Not a single blood drop on her white dress, creating some holy and innocent feeling around, in addition with the place of the case. What a professionalist that maniac should be to take a life yet not leave any mess, beside the small red pools of the liquid in the veins around his victim’s head. If you look closer, for a moment it almost looked like the blood formerld the shape of halo around the maiden’s head.
But the scenery of death wasn’t that important compared to the free-walking Grim Reaper around the civilians. Kalista had already seen many horrible views that would probably live a scar iver ordinary person’s mind for long time, yet she was already professionally distorted that it didn’t affect her in the moment. Just another death she had to accept and at least lend a bit of help to catch the culprit to provide a relife of the desire for justice to the family.
After witnessing the corpse, laying over the floor like sleeping, Kalista decided to take some fresh air from the chillness of the night. She took out a small cigarette box from her pocket and lit up one, solidifying the well-known fact from the smoking habbits of the detective in the popular criminal novels. Well, it could be easily explained with how such people have to keep their minds calm and logical, and the nicotine was the quickest way to do so in hard cases. Even that woman didn’t do it often, it was still an option, just as now.
Her gaze followed how the sky started to slowly to light up, soft orange hues replacing the darkness. Beautiful view if the moment wasn’t such a sad case. But even so, she had to suck it up and continue her day and job.
Throwing the left overs from the cigarette on the ground and pressing it with the top of her shoes to kill any possible fire left in, Kalista took a step ahead into the rising light. Because the criminal was still wandering freely among the peaceful citizens and it was her duty to catch him. What a wonderful way to spend your small break from work. But at least it was some thrill, compared to the supposed peace she came for.
But what are detectives without cases? Nothing, only a living creatures. Mystery was in their veins, the adrenaline allowing them to think better. Their past, present and future till the last breath.
Taking a deep breath, Kalista headed towards the nearest police headquarters.
It was time to catch that killer.
