Prologue

Hunter was buttoning his shirt when he felt a hand slide onto his shoulder and squeeze. He sighed inwardly but tried not to react. Unfortunately, he guessed what was coming.

“Do you really have to go?” Kiera cooed from behind him. Her hand went from squeezing to stroking, and she drew her naked body up to his back and slid her hand down his chest. Before it could go any further Hunter gripped her wrist.

“Yes,” he answered, his voice calm and even. He didn’t understand why this even had to be a discussion. Kiera should know better. He pushed her hand away and stood up, then pulled on his trousers trying not to engage.

“Well, how about having dinner at your place next Friday?” she suggested, clearly disappointed. The question annoyed Hunter. Kiera knew that this was not the kind of relationship they had and that he didn’t like bringing people over to his place. It was his fault really. Kiera had been acting strange lately, sending him sweet messages and asking to have dinner, so he should have known better than to sleep with her again. This is how it always started, they pretended that they wanted casual fun and then made a sneaky attempt to creep into his life.

He decided to ignore the question entirely, she knew the answer anyway. Having received no reaction from him, Kiera wrapped herself in a blanket and shifted to the edge of the bed.

“Sarah was saying the other day how nice it would be for us all to meet up and get to know each other,” she said suddenly. This did make Hunter stop and his head snapped in her direction. Kiera had briefly met his friends when they accidentally bumped into them at the bar. There was no way that she should have Sarah’s number let alone be chatting to her. His annoyance was evident and he could see that Kiera realised she made a mistake.

“Kiera, I don’t know how or why you’re in touch with Sarah but this is not a discussion. We both know what this was.”

Kiera pouted with an indignant look on her face.

“I am just trying to get to know you,” she muttered.

“Don’t,” Hunter said curtly, sliding on his jacket. “This will never happen again,” he added, throwing a glance at the bed. He needed to nip this in the bud before it went too far. Just before he opened the door he stopped and turned back to look at her. Her face instantly lit up, making him frown.

“I would appreciate it if you deleted Sarah’s number, and mine too.” With that, he stepped through the door and closed it firmly behind him.
