Prologue

A man opens his eyes. A woman appearing to be in her twenties lay atop him, sound asleep, the covers pulled over both of them. Bat like wings wrap around his back, the scales brushing against the skin of his back.

Not long after purchasing a motor home with some money he was given after saving a business from a homicidal kaligari, he met up with an old friend, and they recently became what the incusaba refer to as a mated pair.

With a sleepy groan, the woman rolls off him, groggily saying. “I think we got a little carried away.”

“There is no we in you. I told you we should’ve taken that Minori ladies advice on getting that duvyit fruit.” The man answers.

The woman rolls her eyes and sits up, saying. “Don’t act like you didn’t enjoy it.”

“I’m not saying I didn’t. I’m saying your fangs hurt.” The man answers, getting out of the bed.

The two get dressed, and the woman fills a coffee pot, and dumps it into the back of the machine, after turning it on. They sit at a small table with two wooden benches with rubbery cushions built into the floor. The woman pulls a laptop to her side of the table. The man places a similar laptop on his side of the table and opens it.

“Where should we go today, Zane?” She asks.

With a shrug, he answers. “I was thinking we could check out that abandoned school we heard about not far from Arden.”

“What about the Crystal Caverns in the abandoned town of Crystal Falls?” The succubus asks, taking on her human form.

A couple month ago an explosion of energy was reported from the Crystal Caverns, followed by a category nine earthquake that appeared to only surround the caverns. Before that there were demonic omens all over the city of Crystal Falls. It’s a good bet that whatever the explosion was, it has something to do with whatever the demons were up to.

Zane raises an eyebrow, asking. “Yuki, You sure you want to go after something that might be capable of causing an explosion that creates a contained earthquake?”

“This coming from the man crazy enough to chase tornadoes? We go into abandoned places all the time.” She retorts.

Zane laughs before asking. “Anything new on the program?”

“Aside from the explosion at Crystal Caverns, not much. Elementary school poltergeist in Ohio, brainless corps near lake eerie Pennsylvania, man claiming to see skeleton with smoke around it dies from a bullet to the heart despite never being shot in Texas.” She responds, reading off listed articles linked on a hunters website.

Scrolling down reveals a wide array of cases linked to places all over the United States. Closing the laptop she gets up from the table, grabbing two mugs from the cabinet, and pouring freshly brewed coffee into them, before mixing in some caramel, and chocolate.

Zane nods saying. “Here’s one, abandoned boarding school not too far from the river side town of Akortha. EMF detected, but the hunters who investigated found no spirits.”

“Could be machines. Greedy people are never above using grounds where a tragedy happened for money. It’s worth a look.” The Yuki answers.

Since she’s known him, she’s seen abandoned places left to the sands of time. Although only a small fraction of these places actually have a spirit presence. It’s not too often they encounter a place with a tragic background.

“According to Seeker intel on Akortha the people are very open to turned bloods. It’s pretty much the only place where a public level of human and turned blood coexistence is recognized where speciesism isn’t a thing.” Zane says, referencing existing local intel on Akortha.
