Chapter 1

Bright sun rays sting her cheeks, jolting Maira from her sleep. As she gazes at her sister Nora’s picture frame, a tear grazes its corner. Today would have been Nora’s 14th birthday, marking one year since Maira lost her little sister. Determined to move forward, Maira resolves to find the strength to overcome her grief.

Driven by a restless determination, Maira embarks on a sleepless job hunt. She finally discovers the perfect opportunity, a position as a summer camp trainee, working with children aged 10 to 13. Eager to seize this chance, Maira applies for the job, carefully omitting the truth about her sister. With the required proof attached, she waits anxiously.

Within an hour, an email arrives from the employer expressing their interest and requesting an interview the following day. Maira promptly responds, expressing her enthusiasm and scheduling the interview. When the day arrives, she impresses the hiring manager and secures the position. Her start date is only two days away, and her excitement grows as she packs for her journey to Shimla, a beautiful location just an hour’s drive from Delhi.

The summer camp coach, Niren, greets Maira upon her arrival. She is captivated by his charm and intelligence, finding herself drawn to him. Throughout the training sessions, Niren showcases his exceptional skills and creativity in engaging the children and nurturing their hobbies but Niren has a tendency to be careless and occasionally neglectful when it comes to organization and tidiness.. While Maira is satisfied with his behavior overall, she can’t help but notice his nightly phone calls.

One evening, Maira unintentionally overhears Niren speaking on the phone, addressing the other person with the same tenderness he displays towards the children. Intrigued yet hesitant, she musters the courage to ask him about it the following day. Niren confides in Maira, explaining that he has a 14-year-old sister named Maina who often feels lonely at night. To alleviate her solitude, he dedicates hours to talking to her before she falls asleep.

Niren and Maina’s parents reside in California, showering them with financial support and regular check-in calls. Despite their wealth and comfort, Niren encourages Maina to strive for independence and not rely solely on their parents’ resources.

As the summer camp progresses, Maira and Niren grow closer, spending most of their days together. One day, Niren shares a picture of his sister, peacefully sleeping beside him on the couch. Maira’s attention is instantly captured by a blue diamond pendant adorning Maina’s hand, which bears a striking resemblance to the pendant Nora used to wear. Overwhelmed by curiosity, she rushes back to her room, meticulously examining the pictures of her sister. Her suspicions are confirmed when she discovers the same diamond pendant on Nora’s hand. It was a custom-made piece, unique and available in only one store in all of India.

Maira wrestles with the decision to confront Niren about her sister’s disappearance, weighed down by the pain of her loss. Nora had been her constant companion, filling the void left by their deceased parents. Maira yearns for closure, uncertain of her sister’s fate but holding onto the hope that she is safe somewhere, waiting to return. As memories of her sister flood her mind, she vividly recalls the captivating blue hue of her sister’s eyes, along with the constant presence of a blue diamond pendant that never left her side.

Summoning her courage, Maira approaches Niren, sharing the truth about her sister’s disappearance and her motive for joining the summer camp. To her surprise, Niren is genuinely shocked by her revelation. He explains that the blue diamond pendant was a birthday gift to Maina and that he presents her with a unique, personalized object every year. Determined to unravel the mystery surrounding the pendant, Maira and Niren visit the jewelry store together.

At the store, they learn that the pendant was sent anonymously, purchased by Niren himself. The shop owner reveals that similar anonymous gifts arrive each year around the same time. Anticipation builds as they realize another package is due in two days.

Maira anxiously awaits the arrival of the next unique object, while Niren supports her in their shared quest to uncover the sender’s identity. Exhausted from their efforts, they find solace each night, poring over details to no avail. It is during one evening, as Maira gazes at a sunset, that a thought strikes her. She realizes that Niren resides in Delhi and that he purchased the trinket in Shimla simply because it was the only store that carried unique pieces. Compelled by her intuition, she confronts Niren in his room.

Niren confesses that one year, he had forgotten his sister’s birthday due to overwhelming responsibilities. Desperate to find a unique gift for her, he searched all the stores in Shimla until he stumbled upon the one with the trinket. Maira’s doubts persist, and she suggests involving the police to gather more information about Nora’s disappearance.

While Niren is away, Maira seizes the opportunity to explore his room. Among the clutter, she discovers the trinket that arrived at the jewelry store a month earlier. The truth of Niren’s story begins to align with the evidence, but her search leads her to something else—pictures of a 12-year-old girl. Desperate for answers, she scours the room until she discovers a secret drawer in Niren’s cupboard, containing a mobile phone. Maira perceives Niren as someone who is utterly reckless and indifferent towards others, and she believes this is the reason why he kept the phone unlocked. However, what she finds within shocks her to her core.

The phone reveals four pictures of Niren’s sister, all captured while she was asleep in the same position. Her sister Nora has an unusual habbit. She used to pinch her ears in her sleep, a gesture she finds replicated in one of the pictures. With tears streaming down her face, she realizes that the pictures are of Nora, and not Maina. Before she can process the overwhelming revelation, Niren enters the room. Niren attempts to hug her, but she coldly pushes him away. It becomes apparent that she fell into his trap, and he knew she would investigate his room. Without warning, he forcibly places a gag in Maira’s mouth, swiftly followed by a forceful shove into a concealed room tucked away behind the cupboard.

Niren proceeds to reveal the truth about his dark past. His sister tragically succumbed to a terminal illness when she was 12 years old, shattering his heart and extinguishing his interest in life. Consumed by bitterness, he decided to rob other children of their happiness, believing it was only fair since his sister had been denied such joy. He embarked on a sinister spree, selecting children who received extravagant gifts and kidnapping them. After sedating his victims and taking a picture with them, he ended their lives, collecting a trophy from each child to attach to the next victim. Maira is horrified by this revelation, yet finds some solace in finally knowing what happened to Nora.

Trapped and unaware of her fate, Maira yearns to experience the pain her sister endured. One day, Niren posts a condolence message on his Instagram, falsely reporting Maira’s death in a fire accident. He stages her demise by placing her in a car and sending it hurtling toward a tree, stealing her last breath. Satisfied with his cruel act, Niren decides to take a break from the long string of mysteries surrounding him and flies to his other home in California.
