I have known for years that if I did not find my mate by age 20, I would move to the pack house. Every birthday, I begged the moon goddess to find my mate and every year passed watching my friends be mated. I have dreaded this day all year, my birthday.
"Good morning birthday girl" my mom said as she pushed open my door. I think my parents were secretly excited to get me out of the house. I know they wanted to do some traveling and visit other packs. I can't hold it against them,I guess. We all thought I would have found my mate by now. " Mom, why can't I just stay here." I wine to my mother.
" Brooke, you know the pack rules. Moving into the packhouse will help you be exposed to more of the pack members and hopefully find your mate." Mom" replied with a huff. I knew she was right but I didn't want to leave my home. I walked downstairs to find dad leaning on the counter having his morning coffee.
" Don't look so down kiddo you're gonna make some new friends." Dad said. I had one last day at home. My phone buzzed.

I head upstairs to dress for the day. I slip on my favorite skinny jeans and a crop top. I look at my reflection, my long hair falls in loose curls down to my waist, and my blue eyes look tired from my sleepless night. Ugg, I groan to myself as I fall on my bed. I started to think about my last heat. It is uncontrollable, it gets worse the older you get without a mate. My wolf went feral, and Alpha Carter found me running in the woods. I tried to deny him, but my wolf would not allow it. She lowered her head in submission, and he mounted her from behind. I haven't faced him in my human form since then, and that was over a month ago. I knew I had about one and a half months until my next heat, and I planned on locking myself in my room when it came. A knock at my door brought me out of my thoughts. "Diana is here," mom said.
"Coming," I called. I walked downstairs to be greeted by my friend. " Happy Birthday to you," the three began to sing. I laughed and let them finish the song. Grabbing her hand, we headed for the door.
"Be back by 2:00, we need to leave for the packhouse by 3:00 honey," my mom called out. I waved and nodded in agreement.
"I cant wait to hear all the packhouse gossip," Diana said excitedly.
"Don't you have enough going on in your life? You have a mate." I said with a chuckle.
"Yes, I know, and Alex is amazing," she replied. We pulled into our favorite lunch spot El Dorado.
"Lets drown our sorrows with margs, chips and queso" Diana said. I laughed but felt a bit sad that this would probably be our last lunch for a while. The pack house was a 40-minute drive, and I would be busy with pack duties soon. We laughed and drank for the next hour, which was not long enough. Alex came take us home. I hugged D tightly and promised to text her tonight. I walked in the house. Mom and dad were waiting, and my things were all packed. Mom had insisted I let her pack.
The drive to the pack house was quiet. I watched out the window as we pulled up to the large modern cabin, I saw a lot of pack members my age, and then my eyes fell on him. The Alpha. I knew I would have to face him some time, but I was not ready. Dad pulled the car to a stop, and my wolf began to wimpier. "He is not our mate." I linked my wolf. "You don't know that he could be. You haven't had your 20-year heat." My wolf linked back. Ugg, I knew she was right.
My first 20-year heat could reveal a mate I had already met, but it didn't mean it would be him or anyone for that matter. I might remain mate less, or maybe my mate was from another pack. I was pulled out of my worrying when the car door opened.
"Welcome to the packhouse," Alpha Carter said cheerfully." Let the other pack members get your things I can show you around." I turned to hug my mom and dad goodbye, trying to fight the tears.
"You will do great," dad said as he pulled my tight in a hug. Tearsleft my moms eyes. "I love you, babe, call me," she said. I gave a small wave and watched them drive away.
Alpha Carter placed his hand on the small of my back, leading me inside. The room opened up to a large living area with couches and a comfy looking chairs spread around the room. He led me to the kitchen and dining hall before heading to the stairs. "Warriors are on the first floor, mid level pack members are on the second floor, high ranking members are on the third floor," he said as we headed up the stairs. I stopped on the second floor, but he continued. "Are you coming?" Carter asked.
"This is the second floor, right?" I asked. "Yeah, but you are on the third floor," he replied.
"I am not high ranking," I said.
"Not yet, but you will be," he replied. I gave him a confused look. We walked to the end of the hall. " This is your room, right next door to mine" he said with a smile.
" Why is my room beside yours?" I questioned. "It was the only one available," he replied. "I would rather be downstairs near the other people, my rank," I said quietly.
"No, you will be here by me." He said sternly. I was pissed. How am I going to find a mate stuck up here with him!
He opened the door to my room, it was amazing. There were huge windows letting in the sunlight and a sliding door leading to a balcony. The bed was covered in fluffy blue pillows. There was a massive walk-in closet and on suite with a huge tub I planned on taking advantage of. I was in awe. Carter cleared his throat, bringing me back to reality." I will have your things brought up. Want to head down for dinner?" He asked. "Sure," I replied.
He led me back down the stairs to the large dining hall. Carter led us to the head of a large table in the center of the room. Everyone quieted as he raised his hand, using his silent Alpha command.
"We have a new member staying with us. Please welcome Brooke, everyone," he said loudly. Everyone waved and said hello, and there were a few whistles. I noticed Carter quickly look in the direction of the whistles. "Happy Birthday, by the way," he said. I smiled and thanked him.
He was already on my nerves. I have a feeling Carter is not going to leave me alone. Don't get me wrong, he's hot as hell, but I want to find my mate. How am I going to do that if he doesn't let me out of his sight.
I was greeted by some of the pack members and was introduced to Beta Eric. I had enough socializing for the day. " I am going to head up to my room," I said.
" I"ll walk you up," said Carter quickly. I watched as Beta Eric tried to hide his laugh. Shaking my head, I followed Carter up the stairs. "I hope you had a good first day," Carter said.
"I did thank you. I am just really tired." I replied. We reached my door, and I stood awkwardly waiting for him to leave. " Well, goodnight," he said.
"Goodnight," I said as I quickly closed the door. I slumped against the door, thinking to myself,what did I get myself into. I knew what I needed a long hot bath. I walked into the bathroom to find a large gift box the tag read:
I am so glad to have you here. I hope this gift helps you relax and enjoy your first night.

The box was filled with scented candles, bath oils, bubbles, and salts for soaking. They all smelled of honey suckle, my favorite scent. How did he know, I wondered. This is too much to take in. I climbed into the hot bubbles, remembering I needed to text Diana.
