On with the story:

Emily stood in the bedroom packing her bag. Her son Maxwell was sitting on the bed playing with some toys. Maxwell is her world. She had a drunken one night stand and woke up alone. She got pregnant and she didn’t want an abortion or to give up her baby so she became a mother. She met her fiance, James, at a coffee shop and they have been dating for two years. He had proposed to her a month before and they decided to elope. He accepted Maxwell and bonded with him. He even talked about adoption. She was the second oldest of four kids. Her parents died in a car accident a month before Maxwell was born. Her oldest brother Lucas became head of the family and oversaw their parents estate and made sure they all got their inheritance. He was protective of his siblings. They have a younger brother and sister. Her sister was married and has two kids. Her first one was when she was 17. She married her husband and the father of her children when she was 18. Her husband was the same age as her, so no laws were broken. Her husband was a successful businessman. Elsie was a doctor. They have a nanny named Kelly for the kids when they both are working away from home but most of the time Brad is able to work at home so he’s there with the kids.

“Mommy,” Maxwell said.

“Yes baby,” Emily said.

“Who is going to watch me?” Maxwell asked.

“Max buddy, me and Mommy will, you are going with us,” James said.

“I am?” Maxwell asked.

“Yep, we will be a family officially so we might as well start now,” James said.

“Can I call you Daddy?” Maxwell asked.

“Of course you can, I will be your daddy once I sign the papers for adoption after me and Mommy get married,” James said. Maxwell hugged his legs. James lifted him up and hugged him.

“Love you Daddy,” Maxwell said.

“Love you buddy,” James said. Emily heard her phone beep. She got it out and saw her sister texted her to call her. She sat down on the bed and called her.

“Em, thank goodness I got ahold of you before you left for your trip,” Elsie said.

“What’s going on?” Emily asked.

“Brad’s parents were in a bad car accident in Florida, Brad wants me to go with him down there, but the kids have school and Kelly’s mom had hip surgery so she had to go take care of her, Zach and Lucas aren’t able to come stay with them, I’ve called about everyone and no one can come stay with them full time, I know you guys are heading out on a trip with Max but you are our last hope,” Elsie said.

“Elsie, me and James planned this trips a couple weeks ago, Max is so excited about it,” Emily said. James sat down on the bed with Maxwell in his lap.

“Em, please, Brad and I have to get there right away, our neighbors, Kevin and Matt will be with them but they can’t stay for long, we don’t know how long we will be gone and they have to leave in two days for work, and before you say anything, they aren’t gay or anything, they are best friends who share a house and both are straight,” Elsie said.

“Elsie, I don’t need you telling me that, I can’t be the last person on the list for you to call,” Emily said.

“Emily please, you know I wouldn’t have called you knowing you were going on a trip unless you were, I wouldn’t do that to you, you know that,” Elsie said. Emily covered the mouthpiece on the phone looking at James. She quietly told him what was going on. He texted Zach and Lucas.

“Babe, they said she called them first and they couldn’t do it because they are in Colorado and there’s blizzard warnings out there so they are stuck there for awhile,” James said.

“Sis, see if Kevin and Matt can stay with them and I will come relieve them in two days,” Emily said.

“Sis, please I need you here asap!” Elsie said.

“I thought you said you would be gone if I left now and they would be there, what difference does it make if I’m there two days later when they have to leave?” Emily asked.

“Sis, I would feel a lot better if you were here right away in case the guys are called away, they work at the hospital with me and they are supposed to be on call but they usually don’t get called in,” Elsie said.

“Fine whatever I’ll be on my way sis, you owe me big time,” Emily said.

“Thanks sis, I left instructions about everything, love you!” Elsie said. Emily hung up.
