Cada día, desde que ella se había ido, Eric había seguido la rutina de acudir a la playa. Acariciaba la arena y mantenía su vista fija en el horizonte.

Mantenía la esperanza de volver a verla, pedirle perdón por haber estado tan ciego y, si era posible, compartir con ella algo de tiempo.

A veces, por extraño que pareciera, sentía que Ariel estaba ahí, observándolo tras las rocas. Su madre le decía continuamente que todo era fruto de su imaginación, y que lo mejor era olvidarla para dejar de sufrir. Pero Eric no podía. Amaba a esa sirena como nunca había imaginado que fuera posible.

Aunque sabía que estaba siendo un necio, quiso poner a prueba su teoría. Si ella de verdad estaba ahí, quería hacerle entender que no le importaba que pertenecieran a dos mundos diferentes. Incluso si nunca podían volver a verse, ella tenía que saber que siempre guardaría un pedazo de su alma.


Tomó una roca al azar de todas las que guardaba de sus viajes y la utilizó para tallar un corazón. Después la guardó en una caja pequeña de madera y la lanzó al mar.

Durante días esperó una respuesta, cualquier señal que le indicara que ella lo había recibido, pero nunca ocurría nada.

Justo cuando estaba a punto de perder la fe, de hacer caso a las advertencias de su madre y resignarse a volver a su vida ordinaria, la cajita volvió a la playa. Apareció junto a sus pies, como si alguien hubiera calculado el momento exacto para dejarla ahí.

Por un segundo se temió que su regalo siguiera dentro, pero al abrir la caja se dio cuenta de que no era así. Ya no había un corazón tallado dentro, sino una perla preciosa de un intenso azul. La perla más bonita que había visto en toda su vida.

La apretó en su puño y se la llevó al corazón. Ariel seguía allí, y él no pensaba darse por vencido. Así tuviera que desafiar las leyes de su propio mundo.
