First Day

So this is it. My first day of college starts today. Not to say im not excited or anything but ive never been particularly popular in school… being mixed species makes you a big target to the purbreds. We aren’t exactly rare but its not common to see.

Let me introduce myself! My name is Rocco. My mom is a grey wolf and my dad is a racoon. Most of my features i get from my dad like my long, fluffy, grey fur. Just looking at me you wouldnt think i was mixed butttt if you take a good close look at my LONG ASS RACOON TAIL you would quickly realize.

Seriously, if i didnt have my tail lifted all the time it would touch the floor and get all nasty. My tail is my pride! I would never let it get dirty. Of course thats what makes it a weakness to my bullies eyes, they just love to pull, step, and kick it.

“Rocco, come get breakfast!”

I roll out of bed and pull some clothes out the closet. I choose a plain black shirt and ripped black jeans with a balck zip up jacket. I put on my platform Doc Martins that i wear pretty much every day then walk over to my desk and pick up a silver necklace with a little moon charm on it.

“Youre going to be late for school if you dont hurry up!”

I roll my eyes and sigh, walking down stairs. My mom is sitting at the table with dad, talking very quietly. I know theyre just as worried for me starting a new school as I am.

“Okay, im off to school now”

Mom looks as me

“Arent you going to eat breakfast?” she asks

“No thanks, im not hungry.” I reply

She sighs

“Okay…. promise me youll eat lunch at school?”

Shrugging my shoulders I walk out of the house and get in my car. I could walk since the college is only like, a five minute drive but im too lazy for all that.

I park in the back of the school and walk to the entrace. Theres some people throw a ball in the yard, a group sitting under a tree reading some books, and others scattered around in groups just chatting. My eyes drift to the front doors and i notice a tall white Great Dane leaned against the rails with his posse. Rushing past them i keep my head down and keep my tail tucked close.

“Hey mutt! Dont think i didnt notice your ugly mug running by!” He yells out

Shit. Its Donald, my number one hater from high school. I sprint away and hear the sounds of him vicious laugh echoing through my head. I just need to make it through one day at a time and steer clear of him. My college experience will not be ruined by him like high school.

Making it to my first class I sit in the back next to the window and pull out a notebook. The first bell rings and a flood of students come in. The seat next to me remains empty as the last few trickled in. I take in my surroundings, looking around the classroom as the teacher starts the introductions.

“Alright class, since its the first day we are going to do what students dread the most. I want you to take turns standing up and introducing yourself. Just say your name and one interesting fact or hobby you have. We’ll start on my left and go back.”

Everyone groans and the first person stands up. It going down the line until it reaches me. I hate speaking in front of the class. Shaking i slowly stand up.

“U-um my name is R-Rocco.”

People start muttering and whispering.

“ I guess i like to do art”

I quickly sit down and lay my forehead on the desk. Theyre still a few whispering so I perk up my ears to listen to what they could possibly be saying about me.

I can’t believe they would let a mutt in here”

“Did you see his tail? Its so weird”

“What even is he?”

“I dont know, but for sure some kind of freak”

The teacher clears his throat getting the attention of the class and starts the lesson. I pick my head up and start writing down the notes, doodling on the side whenever i get ahead. A brown furred hand pushes a note onto the edge of my desk and I jump slighty, looking in front of me. The deer in front of me makes eye contact and gives a small smile. I look away and look down at the note.

Dont listen to them, I think your tail is beautiful.

Crumpling the note, I keep my head down and zone out for the rest of the lesson.
