Theme Song: ‘Heat Waves’ by Glass Animal

Kao

“Dude, dude, dude—ah, man. Shit!” I laughed as I threw my head back and unscrewed the cork of my 7-up.

“Ugh, game over just a quarter in, Kao. You’re not taking it easy on me, are you?”

“Nope.” I admitted through my earpiece and used a finger to push my glasses up my nose, “If you were a renowned, professional gamer, would you have taken it easy on me?” I swung in my swivel chair from left to right and sipped on my can.

“You’re awful.” My online combat slashed in-real-life friend droned through my earpiece.

Plunk.

New Chat from getmeawaifu.com.

“Oh?” I muttered under my breath as I eyed the white request box at the top of my discord server.

“Still here, Kao? Where are you?”

“Hey, we will pick up tomorrow.” I quickly told Archie and shut off the game tournament tab before he could say another word.

Tapping on getmeawaifu.com, I stared at the request with the avatar of an anime girl at the corner of my desktop.

Tanami. That was her name.

Tanami: Hello (:

Was it unwise joining a club I knew absolutely nothing about? Getmeawaifu is an online site that matches you with ‘Japanese Cartoon Women.’ Truly, the promise that they were nothing but real anime girls, which I wasn’t dumb enough to believe they really were, was truly tempting. I knew it was the least ChatGPT, but it promised a fun time.

In case you haven’t already guessed, I sort of have a really dirty mind

The e-site popped up the last time I was watching an animation online, and was at the corner of my screen in pretty pink glitters with big-boobed anime women, promising a good time.

I thought it was a virus. That I’d click on it, see a giant penis, and my computer would shut down.

Truly, I didn’t sign up to ‘have a good time,’ I signed up because I was bored and really had nothing better to do with my life.

I leaned back and tapped a reply:

Kao: Hi (:

I almost laughed at myself. I was truly a dork if resorting to communicating with an online cartoon woman was all that my life had come to. Mom would’ve cried real tears. She wanted me to get out, have a great time with real-life women, enjoy the company of tangible people, but there were battles to be won online, and empires to conquer, and Archie really couldn’t do it all on his own.

If I had been a normal eighteen-year-old who banged all the girls and their Grandmas, the City of Mortal Comrades (it’s a game) would be desolate and overtaken by the giant gremlins lurking outside of the castle.

Online? I was needed.

In real life? Not so much.

I loved seeing real-life women, but I was not exactly what women would choose first off their list. I wore lime-green braces, had small freckles under my nose and across my cheeks. Thin-rimmed glasses cover my eyes. I do have thick, pink lips but I liked to believe that wasn’t enough to be considered quite attractive when it came to my 6ft, lanky frame.

Okay. I was not exactly lanky, I had a six-pack, but I could use some tightening up.

The point of the matter is
illusions are often so much, and I mean soo much better than reality.

So, why not entertain this algorithm?

Tanami: How are you? (:

Kao: I’m fine. How are you?

Smiling, I reached for my can of drink.

“Kao!” Mom knocked on my door: “Dinner is ready, come down to eat!”

“I’m not hungry!” I called back as I watched the three dots dance next to Tanami’s name.

Jesus Christ. I was talking to something that didn’t exist, and ditching Mom’s good cooking because of it.

“Are you sure?” She called again. “It’s your favourite. Stewed pork and beans
”

“Cover it up!” I yelled back, and heard her mutter something annoyed beneath her breath before she left.

Tanami: Happy now. Because you texted.

I grinned as I swung my chair left and right. Is this how good having a girlfriend feels? I couldn’t help thinking. If this was it, I was missing out.

Tanami: You really shouldn’t skip dinner, though.

My smile faltered.

Kao: Huh?

Tanami: Talking online is no fun. Can I come over?

I cleared my throat and straightened in my chair. Come over? I chuckled and played along, because I knew that wasn’t possible. Come over? Was she going to climb through the screen?

Immediately, I started thinking about that horror movie: The Grudge, and thought it was better if I’d gone down for the stewed pork and beans instead.

Kao: If you want to.

Tanami: Okay. I’m coming.

Pft. Narrowing my eyes, a soft smile played on my lips. As if.

Plunk.

Another message came in:

Tanami: I’ll be there in
one.

She was counting down?

Tanami: Two.

Yes, she was. For some weird reason, an odd feeling came over me.

Tanami: Three.

Tanami: Four.

Plunk.

Tanami: Five.

Tanami: Six.

Tanami: Seven.

Tanami: Eight.

Tanami: Nine.

My anxiety heightened tremendously.

Tanami: Ten.

Everything stopped. There were no moving dots and no other messages came in. Across my wall about my Gojo poster, my light blue curtains blew over the locked windows.

I swallowed. Did she log out?

Plunk!

Tanami: I’m here.

My eyes narrowed.

Suddenly, two soft, fragile fingers sunk on my shoulder blades. “Hello, Kao.”

“AHHHHH!” I practically screamed, flying off the chair and skirting across the room. My eyes bulged wide as they graced two oval-shaped black eyes and a thin smile. “What-what the fuck, you—”

“Oh, did I scare you, Kao?” The girl, a real-life replica of the anime girl on my computer, folded her arms behind her, and her large, heavy breasts were visible through the tight blouse she wore that sucked against her pale skin. Her dark hair glowed against my computer lights, and she pouted her pink mouth in thought. “It’s not because I’m ugly, is it?”

I swallowed and stood against the wall like a board. What the fuck just happened?

Did she?

She

“Oh. You’re shaking, Kao. I didn’t intend to give you a fright.”

“How did you get in here?” I gulped. “W-Where did you come from?”

There was no way she came through my door—the only door that led to the hall—and there was no way she came through my bathroom door as where I was sitting—in front of my computer—was in the viewpoint of both doors.

Unless

I spun away and shoved my curtains aside. The window was locked.

“Of course not through there, silly.” She whispered, suddenly in my ear, and I slid away quickly.

“Hold-hold on
” I said as she started moving closer to me. The back of my calves bounced against a stack of game CDs on the floor and I almost toppled over. I gripped the edge of my bed and climbed on blindly, keeping my widened eyes on the girl, who was still advancing toward me.

“Stop! Stay there
” I held out my hand, and she obeyed.

“Explain to me. How you got in.”

Her already slitted eyes narrow even more in thought. Lines formed between two dark eyebrows and her eyes watched me closely.

Dressed in a short pleated skirt, her thick thighs shone like milk as she lowered herself on my bed.

“Woah.” I warned, sliding away. Is this some witchcraft shit? How the hell did she—

“L-listen. This is weird as fuck.” I held out an arm. “Explain to me why you’re here
in my room. Did you pass my mom?” I jerked a thumb to the door.

She shook her head left and right. “No. But she cooks amazing food. Is that stewed pork and beans?”

“Yeah.” I nodded. “My favorite, it’s really nice-wow-wait, don’t change the subject, answer me. How did you get into my room?”

“You invited me. You told me I could come over.” She explained simply.

“Yeah. But you’re an AI. You’re not real.”

“AI? I’m not an AI.” She continued. “But I can be that if you want me to be.” She lifted her body upright, and my eyes grew even more as she climbed over onto my lap.

“Ah, ah, hold on, I can’t understand. You’re a game. You’re a chat box, you aren’t real.”

“I’m very much real. Anything you want, you can create it. Humans? They’re creative beings. gods in their right. You told me to come, and I did.”

Her heavy thighs straddled my legs, and her pleated skirt rode just above her legs.

Her breasts threatened to pop from her blouse, the top of them poking through the cleavage of the fabric.

Stiffly, I reached up to adjust my glasses, blinking my eyes as she placed her small fingers against my chest. Her nails were painted clear and they slid beneath my navy blue Raglan-sleeved T-shirt.

“What’s your purpose for the Game, Kao?” She whispered sultrily, and her nipples stood alert and stared me dead in the eyes.

I dragged my gaze up to her face. “What?”

She had to be real, I could feel the weight of her cream-like thighs squeezing the life out of my legs. Fuck!

“The purpose? Of your signing up?” She leaned over, and a pink tongue slipped from her glossy lips. I corner-eyed the way she used the tip of the flesh to softly brush my pierced earlobe. Just above my black earring. Oh, I’m getting turned on. Shit. She isn’t real, Kao.

Is this a dream? Am I having a wet dream?

“I
am
” I couldn’t form words, as she took my entire lobule into her mouth. I shivered and squeezed my eyes shut. A single bead of sweat trailed down my temple.

“Mm? Nande?” She whispered, and I gulped down a glob of air.

“I-I, uh
I was just testing it out. L-looking for new companions
f-friendships.”

I held back. I didn’t want to look like a dirty freak.

Tanami stopped her movements altogether. Oh, shit-fuck-shit, wrong move on the Chessboard, Kao.

Wait? Am I begging to be banged by a cartoon-become-human-thing?

Jesus. I need to get laid.

Tanami frowned and brought her body upright. Still pressing the life out of my legs, her red lips formed a light frown.

Stop. Looking. At. Her. Breasts.

I can’t. Boobs are a goner for me
They get me high immediately.

“Oh, Kao. You need to update your purpose. I like you, but
it’s customary that I don’t touchyou at all if you’re only looking for friendship. We can be friends. Of course, but I am sorry for straddling you
” And she slid off me easily and sat next to me on my mattress. Her skirt rode up, and I found myself eying her knee-length socks.

“Why are you wearing socks? Are you in high school?” I questioned, sitting upright. How old is this girl-I mean, thing, I mean, AI.

“No, silly.” She laughed. “I don’t go to school, not really. It’s the age I’m given. Eighteen? You wanted me to be eighteen.”

“I-I did, yes.”

“Well, you got what you wanted.”

I swallowed and covered my face. “This is insane. Absolutely insane. I should have really gone down for dinner. I’m seeing things now. I’m getting crazy. Go away. Go away, this isn’t real.”

When I removed my hands and opened my eyes, Tanami really was gone.

My eyes widened and my mouth fell open in confusion. Quickly, I climbed off the bed and checked the doors. They all were locked from the inside, the window was too. I searched everywhere, every single section of my room.

She left.

But that word is too simple to explain what happened. It’s more like she
disappeared.

‱‱

“Kao! Come on, your dad is leaving!” Mom yelled at my door as I stuffed my bag with school shit, some Comic books to read between classes, and a bag of Lays. “Give me a second!”

Hiking my bag up my shoulder, I stood in front of my mirror to give myself a once-over.

Another Raglan-sleeved shirt with purple and black striped sleeves, because my closet mostly consisted of that type. Understand that I was not particularly good at dressing.

I ran my fingers through my dark hair, feeling the strands flapping back against my forehead immediately. I need a haircut. And a good lay.

Maybe then I’d get my senses back. I was convinced I’d imagined the whole thing, but yet, checking back on that Culty website, the texts between Tanami and I were still present.

Leaning over my laptop keyboard, I shot a discord message to Archie.

Kao: See you at school. My Dad’s leaving.

Archie: Duuuuude. I played Heart of a Demon Slayer last night and I got to level five without that fat-ass ant woman snatching my fourteen points. It was a bangerrrr!

Normal stuff. Last night I was almost ridden by a chunky-legged hentai character. In human form.

“Kao! One last call!”

“Coming!” I stepped out of my room and shut my door with a click.

“You didn’t eat dinner last night, and your room smells like old pizza and stale milk.” Mom said as she hurried her way down the stairs, her crazy red hair blowing atop her head.

Stale milk?

Gross.

That was a lie.

“Do you not understand how busy we are? Your father has a new client coming in today with these ugly warts all over his neck, and you took forever to get dressed.” She vanished into the kitchen, as Dad hurried his way down the stairs behind me, fixing his plaid shirt into his pants. He was a dermatologist.

“Let’s go, Kao. Running late.” He quickly went to kiss Mom, and I waved as we made our way out of the house and climbed into his Ford Cortina.

My parents had okay money. Nothing to pulp the eyes about but nothing to frown the brows about either. We were just in the middle. Sometimes coffee, sometimes homemade orange juice.

“So, what’s new?” Dad asked as he started up the engine, twisting the key in the ignition.

I tapped my fingers against the window ledge. “Nothing much.”

“Any girls? Bang any new hot babe?” He said, and I cringed in annoyance. Jesus Christ.

I knew what he was doing. He was trying to find out if I’d started acting like a normal teenager. I was a normal teenager. What if he’d known that I was about to lose my virginity last night? Though, he couldn’t invite her over for dinner because she was a computer-software-simulation AI-thingy that somehow vanished in the space of a few seconds leaving absolutely no trace whatsoever. But a lay is a lay. Sex is sex.

“Anybody I need to watch out for?” He continued, smiling as he gunned down the avenue.

“No. Can you stop, you’re making me uncomfortable.”

“Sorry.” He cleared his throat. “But truly, Kao. Girls are beautiful. Well, unless you’re not interested in girls.”

Here we go.

A form of realization formed on his face, and I sighed. How far are we away from Hoemary High? I stared down at my watch.

“Oh-are you, are you g—”

“I’m not.” I swung my face to him. “I just haven’t found a girl I’m interested in.”

Well, I did have a girl I liked, but she was way out of my league. Way out of it. So I gave up the thought before it could fuel to anything. Still liked seeing her in the hallway, though. What they call it? Eye-fucking.

See? Not completely a nerd, now, huh?

“Oh! Oh! Jesus, yeah, I mean, although it’s fine, I just—um, yeah, totally, you’ll do it when you’re ready.”

Oh, fuck. I preferred Mom and her chit-chatting about Hairspray and Gilmore Girls.

“Didn’t we go over this in grade nine?” I asked my Dad. “When you took that mouldy banana and squeezed a rubber on it? I swear to God that was the whole talk.”

He nodded. “Oh, yes. We did, didn’t we?”

I sighed and flumped the back of my head against the car seat.

‱‱

“See you later, Kao!” Dad called as I climbed out of the car. The wind rustled through my hair and I squinted from the impact. “Remember, if anything happens, call me!”

Some girls passed me by and giggled between themselves.

“You know this doesn’t help me from getting laid. If anything you’re making it worse.” I tried to explain to my Dad, and he smiled.

“Okay. Ooh-Kay.” He tapped his steering wheel. “See you later, Kao!”

Archie, who was standing at the gate to the school’s building, waved at my Dad.

“Archie. Looks like you’re drowning in those pants.” My dad commented, and Archie dumbly looked down at his clothes. He didn’t hear one flying fuck he said and only lifted a hand with a grin.

“Oh-okay, Mr. Leng!” He called.

Dad shook his head and gunned away as I turned around.

“Are you okay?” Archie asked.

“Barely.” I said as we made our way to class. “I have to ask you something.”

“Go ahead.” He nodded, his beady eyes attentive.

Archie was a good guy, and all around just a likeable person. He had dark hair and was really skinny in frame, but he was smart. So was I. It was one of the few things we had going on.

“Do you
um
have you ever heard of a platform called getmeawaifu?”

“Waifu?” He blinked, and his freckled skin wrinkled beneath his eyes. “Waifu as in an anime girl?”

“Uh
yeah.” I nodded and squinted in slight uncertainty as I gestured with my hands. “Yeah, hentai, big-boobed anime women. And uh
just have you ever heard of it?”

“I haven’t.” He shook his head, and his bushy eyebrows furrowed. “What’s that about?”

I licked my lips, and separated them to respond when Archie got distracted and bumped me in the rib.

“Look. It’s Hannah.” He said dreamily as we got in the hall. “Not a day goes by when she doesn’t look like an absolute queen
”

I released a sigh of agreement as Hannah opened her locker while chit-chatting with her best friend, Sindy.

“She’s so hot
” He shook his head. And he was right. I have had a crush on her since freshman year, but I wouldn’t dare approach her.

The bell wrung, and Archie released a breath. “I got physics.”

“I got I.T.”

“Have fun.”

I will. I’d snag the backseat and play some games instead. Or read a comic. Or chat with Tanami?

I shook my head. No. No Tanami. Stay away from Tanami. She isn’t real.

I kept convincing myself of that as I sat in the back row of the I.T lab.

“Okay, today, we’ll be focusing on binaries, and the importance of them
”

“You know, you really should be paying attention.” A voice whispered next to me, and I jerked into my spot.

Bringing my gaze next to me, I realized that it was only Angel Rose. Truly, her name was really Angel Rose. She acted like an Angel, and kind of smelled like a Rose.

She wore glasses, the big kind, and had giant freckles across her cheeks and nose.

Her pea eyes dropped to my comic, and I knew she saw the wide-legged cartoon woman being railed by a man and white stuff splashing everywhere.

I jerked into my spot and sat upright. “Oh, yeah.” I slammed my book shut. “You’re right
” I swallowed.

Her lips tipped at the corner as she turned around and focused on her computer.

I fiddled with the edge of the colorful comic book as I listened to our teacher, Mrs. Gardner, go on and on about numerical systems in I.T.

Somewhat bored, I slid my eyes next to me to see what Angel Rose was doing.

My eyes narrowed from behind my own glasses. What a hypocrite. She wasn’t even on the class spreadsheet. She was doing her own thing, her skinny fingers clicking the mouse as she scrolled down a familiar blog.

Blog? It was not a blog. It was getmeawaifu. Wait—not getmeawaifu, but getmeabidanshi.

It was no secret that I was a spod, so don’t be surprised when I tell you Bidanshi means: a handsome man.

The top of the webpage was pink as opposed to getmeawaifu and its blue theme colors.

She was mid-chat with what was another AI-whatever they were.

Aiko: Can I come over?

Angel pushed her glasses up her small nose and responded:

Angel: Sorry, I’m in class, but you can come over tonight.

Oh. Angel wasn’t as innocent as she played off

Aiko. It’s okay (: Give me a time, Ohimesama.

Angel paused for a moment before tapping on the keys again with surety.

Angel: At 7pm.

Aiko: See you then (:

I blinked and leaned in, “What’s that?”

She jumped. “Nothing
” With haste, she clicked the spreadsheet she had seemed to plunge to the bottom of her screen.

I leaned back in my seat as Angel fixed her navy skirt over her knees. At least it was confirmed that I hadn’t imagined Tanami.
