“Ouch!” Luke yelped. His younger sister, Brielle, had just kicked him under the table. “I was just kidding,” he cried. “Well next time say that.” his sister barked back.
It was a Sunday afternoon and his family had just left church. They were now at the Black Iron restaurant for brunch. It was a Sunday tradition that right after church they would come to this restaurant, sit at the same table, and order the same thing.
“Momma I gotta pee,” his youngest sister, Bella, cried out. “Me too,” agreed Brielle. “Okay, let’s go girls. We’ll be back in 10 minutes,” his mom told both him and his dad.
After the girls left, his dad turned to him and said, “So what do you plan on doing for your first week of summer”. “I don’t know yet. Maybe play some basketball and video games with Peter,” replied Luke. Peter was Luke’s best friend since kindergarten. “ Okay because me and a couple of buddies are planning a hunting trip and were thinking of bringing our sons and I was wondering if you are interested in coming,” his dad, Jeremy, said while scratching his beard.
“Wait do I get to shoot at animals”. “Maybe,” his dad smirked. “So cool, yea I wanna go,” Luke brightly smiled. The joy in his eyes made his dad chuckle, “I love you kiddo”. “I love you too dad”.
BANG! A gunshot rang through the air. Luke quickly ducked under the table, closing his eyes while reciting Deuteronomy 31:6. So be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid and do not panic before them. For the Lord your God will personally go ahead of you. He will neither fail you nor abandon you.
BANG! BANG! Two more gunshots rang through the air. Dad, Luke suddenly remembered. He quickly opened his eyes searching for him. He turned to his left only to see him lying on the floor with blood gushing from his head. Fifteen year old Luke stayed frozen for what seemed like eternity.
