Chapter 1
“Sandy! Sandy! Asanda!”
Little Paige summoned her sister in the woods and Sandy did not waste any time to show up before Paige.
“Where have you been? I’ve been looking everywhere for you.” Paige complains
“Relax Paige, I was just here. I’d never go anywhere far from you, now come let’s go back home.”
They hold hands and walked back home, the girls stayed in the countryside of Derby (Fiction) with their grandparents while their parents worked in Miami.
The sisters reach their home and they lock the doors and closed all the windows, exactly how their old grandparents taught them.
Grandma Lisy and Grandpa Mark were grown and frail to do anything besides taking care of their beautiful garden at the back of the house, they normally chilled in the seating area together while grandma Lisy was sewing and grandpa was just watching news on the small television they had.
The sisters on the other hand were different, Paige was only eleven and Sandy was just seventeen, they truly loved each other and enjoyed exploring the forests near them every day and all their lives.
Since Sandy was the one doing almost everything at home Paige land a helping hand always and with just about anything.
Sandy went to the kitchen to prepare dinner for everyone and Paige joined her to help.
“When I grow up I want to be a chef” Paige utters
“Ohhh so you’ll cook for everyone of us?”
“Yes, you’ll be the first one to taste my meal.”
“Mmm, I’ll be honored, Paigey”
They both exchange smiles and went to give their grandparents their meals in each tray and they went to the kitchen to have their dinner.
“What do you want to be when you grow up?” Paige asks her sister, she had such a euphonious voice that one couldn’t stop smiling when she uttered her words.
“Uhm…I don’t know, maybe a zoologist. I love animals and especially the ones we come across in this forest.”
They both laugh.
Later that day the girls made sure to help put their grandparents in bed and they turned off the television, Paige went to sleep and Sandy sits on the sofa and dials her parents number, at first it just rings without anyone answering and at second a woman answers.
“Hello”
Sandy who was sad then pretends to sound pleased to hear that voice.
“Hey…” she pauses
“Hey honey how are you?” her mother asks
“I’m fine, did you get my last message, I called you a week ago and you were not available so I left you a message.”
“Oh sorry honey doll, I’ve been very busy” she laughs it off “What was the message?”
“Grandpa’s running out of medicine and he’s getting worse, I don’t know…maybe you might want to come by to check how he’s doing or take him to the hospital.”
There was a long pause and Sandy heard her mother sigh.
“Okay I’ll see what I can do”
“Sure.” The pain in her voice could be heard.
“How’s Pai-”
Sandy already hung up on her and she covers her face with both hands and then rolls her eyes then she goes to sleep with her little sister because the cottage was so small with just two bedrooms, a bathroom, kitchen and seating area.
The next morning as usual Sandy finds out that her mother sent her money to buy her grandfather’s medication but she did not say anything about coming over to check on how he was doing.
~$5000 for granddaddy’s meds. Love you~
Sandy read the message from her phone and she rolls her eyes then puts the phone away then she went back to wash dishes, Paige was behind her.
“Hey, are we going to the forest today?” she asks
“No, we’re driving to town, for grandpa’s medicine.”
“Oh I’m excited, it’s been long since we’ve gone to town.”
“Yeah, but we won’t be long unfortunately, grandpa’s isn’t doing so well.” Said Sandy
“Why don’t you call mom and dad to come get him to the hospital?”
“Yeah…right” Sandy stuttered, she did not know what to say to her little sister.
“Yeah, I will” she smiles
Before they waste anymore time they quickly went to their bedroom and took out hoodies then they drove to town which was four hours drive and grandpa taught Sandy how to drive his truck that she was using now.
It was cloudy and it looked like storm was on the way. They finally reached the drugstore.
“Hi, can I get the same old” she said
The young man who worked as a cashier winked at her and she looked through the window to avoid him. The young man brought them the box of medicine.
“Your old man doing okay with lung cancer?”
It was a small town and everyone in town knew where Sandy’s family was staying.
“You know this medication can make him worse right? He needs to see a doctor.” The young man told Sandy
Sandy rather grabbed Paige's hand and stormed out of the drugstore without answering the young man.
They got in the truck.
“You want anything else, Paige?” Sandy asks
“No.”
Sandy starts to drive away.
Storm catches them on the way and Paige sleeps in the passenger seat while Sandy speeds the truck so she would get home to their grandparents as soon as possible.
Once they reach home Paige wakes up and they went inside the house only to find their grandmother weeping.
“Help! Help!” she screamed for help.
Sandy and Paige run to them.
“What happened? Grandpa? Grandpa!”
Sandy shook him but he would not wake up and Paige started to freak out and Sandy sirs her down.
“Relax okay Paige, please relax, he’s going be okay.”
Sandy tries to compose herself and picks up the phone and dials her mother’s phone but she does not answer and she calls her father who his phone was off then Sandy did not know what to do.
“What do I do?” she asks herself with fear.
Sandy runs to get water from the kitchen and gives takes out the medication from the box then she put the pills inside her grandpa’s mouth and makes him drink water, although he was not responding.
“Oh my God, I don’t know what to do, mom and dad are not answering their phones. Grandma I need to drive him to the hospital”
“That’s four hours away, he won’t make it” said grandma
“No, he will grandma.”
Sandy tries her best to help her unconscious Grandpa to the track, it was still raining outside and grandma climbed in the passenger seat with her husband, there was no space for Paige.
“We’ll be back Paige!” Sandy told the shocked Paige and climbed in the truck and she started to drive away.
While driving, Sandy was speeding in the rain and her hands were shaking on the steering wheel and she kept looking at her grandpa which bought tears to her eyes, she was trying so hard to avoid the idea of losing this man that raised her like a father should, the man that was always there for her in bad and good times, she did not want to be away from this man ever!
Making it to town she still drove recklessly in tears and God knows whatever that was going on in her head that she ended up not paying any attention to the traffic lights and she ran over another car with another car running over her truck on the side where her grandma was seating, the passenger seat side leading to a car accident.
