Freshman | The Summer

It was summer 2006, the weather was dry with a slight dusty breeze and not a cloud in sight, the smell was that of freshly cut wet grass, leather and axe body spray. I stood there on the sidelines zoned out staring at the distant Sandia Mountains peaking out just over the boxed architecture of the buildings surrounding the foreground, chewing on my mouth piece, thinking about food and skateboarding with my neighborhood friends. The next thing that happened, a series of clacks and grunting followed by a whistle blowing. It was the coach signalling that the play had ended. It was my first day.

Football Practice, it was the last thing I thought I’d be doing that summer. Like I said, I’d much rather be hanging out with Joey, Kevin and Thomas in the neighborhood, skateboarding and jamming to some Fall Out Boy. My brother, an aggressive, angry, stocky, overweight 16 year old, insisted that I join the team with him, he’s a year and a half older than me so I didn’t really have a choice. I suppose reflecting back on it now, it was something that I needed in my life. At the time, I was about 4 feet 9 inches, flat footed, clumsy and fat. I didn’t have a particle of peach-fuzz on my lip, or an inch of hair on my pits and to top it all off, every time I made a phone call people referred to me as ma’am.

As the summer progressed, our team began working as one, I started building frienships and in no time I shredded all of the fat I obtained up to that point thanks to that hot deserty New Mexico heat and aggressive sweating during our two-a-days. I was still skating with my neighborhood friends, but I began getting even more involved with my football team. Still no hair on my lip and balls have yet to drop, that didn’t stop how good I felt about myself. The cheerleaders, dressed in cute girly work out clothes and in great shape, would show up in the mornings to rehearse their routine. There were a few that would catch my eye and I’m quite sure my penetrating graze, broad posture and slightly tilted smile contagiously attracted one or two of the older classed cheer leaders. This was the starting point of my fantastical attraction to older women.

There was something in the air that year or perhaps it was just me. I began to realize the true beauty and symmetry of women, the way their hips shifted and swayed signifying their seductive walk, the bold roundess of their breasts bouncing buoyantly with each stride and the perfect curvature of indentation chizling around their abs like an abstract piece of art. The sensationally seductive scent of their perfume always brought me back to that cartoon where the skunk smells the pheramones of the lady skunk and he becomes mesmorized and begins to float his way toward her, only to be shut down by her prowess. Pepe Le’ Pew was the skunks name. That summer was an entirely new discovery for me, mind you I was a still a virgin but don’t get me wrong, my first kiss happened long before this time, in a large tractor tire, on a playground during recess, and they were sisters, must have been in 5th grade if I can recall correctly.

The summer had ended and the school year began, my highschool mascot was a maroon and gold Viking, the layout of the school consisted of rows of buildings lettered A through Z some buildings were older than others and the lockers were painted a faded maroon from the early 80’s, I wouldn’t be surprised if there was lead in that paint. Just outside the gym and basketball courts there was a large Viking Ship with faded paint chipping away around the edge. This ship doubled as a seated bench for lingering students eating lunch or killing time, and eventually gets over run by the long-haired dubious stoners.

Normally for me the first day of a new school was awkward and dreadful. I moved around to different schools. During lunch most people segregated and were grouped with people they knew from their previous schools. Fortunately, this year was different for me even though I didn’t go to the same schools as most of the other students I was popular, I hung out with the football crowed in the center of the B and C buildings where there was a large corridor filled with grass, tree’s and shade. This section, B and C, became the spot where the “cool kids” hung out. The goth’s, emo’s and musicians hung out between A and B, and for some reason the D building was the multicultural area predominantly populated with the mexicans. Further out was where the artsy folks would be around E through F. I never went passed the D building my freshman year the majority of my classes were in A, B and C.

Freshman year was a defining year. I never got hazed by the football team because my brother demanded respect and it trickled down to me, additionally because of my brother, I never got jumped by the Mexican’s when they randomly threw a water bottle as a game in an attempt to pass it through your legs as you walked through D building. I believe they called it, “La Bomba”. I had a growth spurt that took me from 4’9" to 5’6" or so, which was the average height for my age, my confidence was high and teachers laughed at my jokes allowing me free rein to do as I pleased, or so I thought. I was athletic and energetic and I was not afraid to talk to the hottest girls in school. I’d say I started developing a comedic personality and was willing to break the ice with clever lines, and ridiculous actions. Kendal, being the most attractive freshman that I knew, well it was toss up between her and Jessica on the cheerleading team, was a tall long-legged artificially blond fox with a fat booty and filled out body looking like someone you’d see on the crinkled page of a sticky magazine you’d found underneath your brothers bed. She was in a few of my classes, and I couldn’t help but find myself day dreaming of ways to flirt with her. The interesting thing is to this day, I day dream a lot about a lot of things, success and sexual fantasies being the two most important at that time. Kendal immediately had sex appeal and it made sense, a year later during the summer registration transitioning into Sophmore year I bumped into Kendal and her Mother in line to register. To describe her mom would be like describing Jenna Jameson with excessive botox, including fake breasts and a skirt that revealed her perfectly tanned in-shape legs. One time in Biology class we were conducting a science experiment involving burning the oil in peanuts and examining how many calories a peanut could burn. Our class room was shaped like a typical High School Science classroom, a large u-shaped desk with electrical outlets and Bunson Burners littered throughout, Kendal was sitting about 4 seats down from me and I could see she was struggling to set up her environemnt. I wanted to help her out but be smooth and fly so in an instant I rolled onto the desk like it was Coyote Ugly and I began moving my body in ways that I could only assimilate to the Epic Sax Guy playing the saxaphone, and dry humping the air as my signature dance move. The class began to laugh and as I rolled my way down to Kendal I started to act weird and shake my butt in her face. I could tell she was amused and slightly embarrassed for me, I didn’t care. After squirming my way to her section of the desk, I plopped off the table onto her lap and began acting like a chippendale offering a playful lap dance. Remember she was a tall young woman probably closer to 5’11" at the time so I had plenty of room to bump and grind. Long story short, I straddled her and gazed into her eyes and said some cheesy pick-up line that I can’t recall, but most-definitely put a smile on her face. That move would have gone down in history as the best pick-up line known to man, if it weren’t for some schmuck who a few seconds later accidentally flung his burning peanut experiment into the air-conditioning duct setting the non-fire proof material a blaze, I would have sealed the deal with a kiss from Kendal as we were inching closer toward each other, then in an instant, we were interrupted by the fire alarm roaring through the classroom screaming at us to evacuate.

Time moved on, football season ended, the weather was windy and weary, the leaves began to fall and we were approaching Halloween, nothing happened between me and Kendal, she happily put her number in my phone and we partnered up in biology during experiements but the fire died out quickly. I didn’t think too much of it, Biology was the second class of my day, my first class was also my favorite class. P.E
