THE NBHD// Greetings from California
I wait for the school bus to pick me up, while I wait in my black jacket, black mini skirt with grey tights, and doc marten boots that are knee-high. It’s the second week of September and it’s the beginning of my junior year, the weather outside is nippy and cold. I stick a cigarette between my teeth and light it with my red lighter, hoping it will warm me up until the bus arrives. I know I should wear thicker clothing, but I don’t care, it will ruin my outfit. Plus, it’s warm on the bus and in the school. I shake my legs and bounce up and down while puffing on my cigarette.
The bus pulls up a few minutes later and I see my reflection on the bus doors, glancing at my black eyeliner and shadow with my dark red lip gloss. I glimpse at my straight brown hair that’s in a bob. I throw my cigarette on the ground and stomp on it before hurrying up the bus stairs. I walk down the aisle and Nilsa my best friend with red firey hair, waves at me from the back of the bus, she’s wearing a smile and had saved me a seat. She’s sitting where all of the boys are, I roll my eyes when one of them winks at me.
I can’t stand how loud and annoying they can be. They listen to our conversations and constantly try fucking with us. I just wish for one second, they wouldn’t make comments about our bodies sexually.
“Hey, bitch!” Nilsa grins at me, I sit down beside her and glance at her brown caramel skin, I kiss her cheek.
Within the next few bus stops, it will be my second-best friend’s bus stop, which is Seven. We sit close in our seats and have our backpacks resting on our knees. Me and Nilsa chat about the new boy she’s been talking to and the recent dates they have gone on. Nil is a love bird and loves the feeling of love, I still support her no matter what though. She’s my best friend and even though she gives too much of herself, I know eventually she will find a good guy one day. We’re teenagers though, so I don’t expect it to be soon.
The bus screeches at Seven’s bus stop and I see a blonde-haired, tall skinny, light-skin black girl walk heavily up the stairs. It’s Seven. Me and Nilsa smile at her, making sure to scoot over and save this entire bus seat for us three. We’ve done this since elementary school.
The boys sarcastically duck their heads, “Witch!” one of the boys scream and points at her.
Seven puffs her chest out and sticks out her tongue at them, making all the boys flinch and get scared. She cackles like an evil Disney villain; she sits down beside us. Wearing a torn black rock band shirt, black pants, and matching platform heels. Seven has her schoolbooks under her arm.
“I love doing that.” She bites down on her bottom lip, tainted with crimson red paint. Me and Nilsa laugh at her.
The bus makes a few more stops and then we’re off to school, the school is named “South High” which is centered in Wicked Town. Wicked Town is where me and both of my best friends were born and raised. The town is full of mystery and darkness, there are many stories of haunted houses and ghosts that prowl the street at night. I don’t believe any of that bullshit though, I believe in crystals, liquor, and Prada. The name makes people think that something is wrong with the place and there is something ‘evil’ about it. But I don’t think so. The school we all attend is a place that has judgmental students in it. Me and my friends dress in goth and grudge clothing so everyone thinks we’re devil worshippers or witches. but we’re not, we’re just angsty teenagers. Most of the time, the school is simple and chill.
We hook our arms together as a group when we step off the bus and head into a place worser than hell, hoping that this new school year is great and fun.
Hours go by and I hear through peers that Seven has gotten into a fight.
