Chapter 1: The Beginning of the End

Like that- Bea Miller
Can see it from the way your looking at me
You don’t think I’m worth your time
Don’t care about the person that I might be
Offended that I walk the line
So what if I’m not
So what if I’m not
Everything you wanted me to be
So what if I am
So what if I am
More than you can see
ELENA’S POV
I can’t move. I’m trapped underneath all of these secrets and lies, It’s like I’m still alive but I’m not actually breathing. All I wanted to do was start over as if it never happened but there it was, the worst day of my life happening over and over again. Everyone says that there was nothing that you could’ve done but you don’t believe them. You keep telling yourself that you could have done something, that you didn’t try hard enough, and it was all of your fault. I can never sleep. I keep having these terrible dreams that won’t go away.
Ever since the ordeal, I’ve been going to therapy once a week but it’s not helping it’s only recreating the past. I didn’t know that this type of pain was even possible. You ask yourself, why? Why does it hurt so much? Why did this happen to me? I don’t deserve this. Well the truth is, no one really knows why it happens or why it hurts so much. You never know until it happens to you. The only thing that you can do is just live life while you can and enjoy every moment because you never know what is going to happen. Many people believe in hope, miracles, heaven, and hell. The question is what do you believe? I honestly don’t know what to believe anymore. If I could go back and do everything differently, I would. If I had just chosen to stay home that day…
ONE YEAR AGO TODAY
“Come on girl, we have to go out it’s your birthday!” Lexi shouted at me from across the room.
Lexi is my absolute best friend in the entire world. She has always been the outgoing, wild, and carefree one, while I’m more relaxed and can be introverted at times. She has beautiful light brown hair with golden blond highlights and her hazel eyes are like windows into the soul. Even though we are complete polar opposites, we complete each other. There isn’t anything I wouldn’t do for this girl and she for me.
I rolled my eyes at her, “Didn’t you just go out last night and get hammered?”
“Yeah and your point El?” She said in a sarcastic tone.
“My point is aren’t you tired and hungover from last night?”
“Girl I’m never too tired for you. It’s your fucking birthday! You only turn 20 once so we have to do something,” she pleaded to me.
“Fine but since it’s my birthday, I have three rules:”
- I get to pick out what I wear
- We are not going to that sketchy bar ever again
- And you let me drive.
“Done, done, and done. Although, your driving is a little terrifying,” she smirked and threw her hands up already knowing she was going to get slapped.
“Oh shut up, my driving record is perfect,” I smacked her arm playfully.
As I’m getting ready, I feel a little off. I’ve had this feeling ever since I woke up this morning. I can’t quite explain it but you know when your gut tells you not to do something. Well today I ignored my gut feeling and that may have just been the biggest mistake of my entire life.
I mumbled to myself, “ Lexi’s waiting, I need to hurry up and finish getting ready.”
I decided that I wanted to go to this arcade/bar but first I needed to get coffee. Coffee has always been an essential for me. Ever since I started college and realized that you basically get no sleep, I learned that coffee became my hero.
As I pulled into Lexi’s place, I noticed that she wasn’t outside. I grab my phone and call her. She answers almost instantaneously.
“Hey girl I’m sorry I’m coming out right now just give me a sec.” she stated quietly as if she didn’t want anyone to hear her talking on the phone.
Looking closely at her front door waiting for her to walk out of it, I notice a dark figure open the window and hop out of it. Of course it’s Lexi quietly hopping out of her window and making sure she doesn’t make a sound.
Lexi jumps in the car speaking in a quiet tone, “Sorry I got grounded again for sneaking out last night.”
“I told you going out last night was a bad idea,” I stated my concern.
Lexi laughs, “It’ll be fine, let’s just go get some coffee because lord knows I fucking need it.”
We arrive at the Coffee shop and because the drive through line was so long, we decided to go inside. I noticed that there wasn’t a lot of people in there and that helped calm my nerves a little. Crowds can be overwhelming to me sometimes.
One thing that I did notice in particular was a man sitting toward the back corner of the shop. He was wearing a black hoodie and dark gray sweatpants, along with sunglasses which was odd considering it was ninety degrees out. I could feel his glare even though I wasn’t sure because I couldn’t see his eyes. All I knew was I had to get out of there. He gave me the creeps for some reason.
Lexi and I grabbed our coffee and headed out. We drove for what seemed to be about thirty minutes before we arrived at the arcade. I picked the arcade/bar because I knew Lexi would want to drink. I’m not much of a big drinker. I hate the feeling of being hung over. It’s feels like getting hit by a bus or maybe even worse.
Anyways, I grabbed the tokens for the arcade while Lexi went to the bar to order a drink. She has a fake ID that looks so real, she can get in anywhere. She’s older by a few months but can sometimes act like she’s fifteen. It’s one of the many things I love about her.
Lexi walks over, drink in hand, “ Happy Birthday biotch! I love you with all my heart and I couldn’t ask for a better best friend. I hope you’re having a great time because you deserve it.”
“Thank you Lex for making me get out of the house. I really needed it. And I love you too.” I say gratefully.
A FEW HOURS LATER
“I am kicking this games ass El, and I’m reallyyyyy drunk so can we please danceeee,” she begged.
It’s past midnight now and I feel drained. My break only lasts for 2 weeks and then I go back to campus. I want to get as much sleep as humanly possible. She’s going to kill me for this but she’ll get over it right?
“Lex I’m ready to go home, I’m so tired. And you’re wasted so I should really get you home too,” I say calmly.
“Bitch you know what, I’m not even going to put up a fight. I have the spins now so I’m ready to leave,” she agrees.
We headed for the car and that’s when I saw him. He was leaning against an old blue Chevy, grinning at me as I got into the car.
I hurriedly dug through my purse for my keys, “Lex we need to leave right now!” I panicked.
That’s when I recognized him.
It was the same man I saw in the coffee shop. The same one wearing a hoodie and sweats in ninety degree weather. He waved at me as we drove off into the night.
“Elena why the fuck are you freaking out? What’s wrong?” She shouted.
“It’s him. Lexi it’s him.”
ETHAN’S POV
I was out running when I passed by the coffee shop. I decided to turn around and go back in because I could go for a coffee. That’s when I noticed her. She had long hair that went down just above the top of her perfectly shaped ass. Her jett black hair shone through the cracks of the coffee shop windows and her light gray blue eyes beamed at the sun. She was standing next to a girl, I’m assuming her best friend because of their body language. They were nothing compared though. She was way prettier than her friend. There was some sort of innocence about her, yet a fire in her eyes.
I have to have her.
After they left the coffee shop, I followed them to this bar/arcade and waited for what seemed like hours. They finally came out. Her friend was stumbling struggling to keep her balance. She had her arm around her supporting her getting into the car. I noticed that she saw me when she started rapidy digging through her purse while shouting at her friend. I couldn’t hear what they were saying because the windows were up but the look in her eyes. I could tell she was frightened. She had a right to be though. I would be creeped out if I thought someone was following me. However, she has a right to be scared. She had no idea what was coming to her.
I waved at her as they drove off into the night. I got in my car and started it.
That’s when I knew.
She was the only one I wanted.
No matter what it took.
I had to have her in my possession.
